After he'd tossed the gloves over, Claude settled back with his book and figured that would be the end of it. Or at least of the sheet destruction, and it's not until he realizes the room's gone quiet - that she hasn't sent another sharp remark in his direction - that he looks up again. She seems to be studying the gloves very carefully even if he can't see her face. He's about to say that she doesn't have to take them if she doesn't want to before she beats him to asking if he's sure.

"I'm positive. They might not even be mine to give away, what with belonging to this whole place and all, but they'll be more comfortable than a sheet, right?" All said nonchalantly, to put no emphasis on anything that might make her uncertain about the gesture he means as a small kindness. "Come to think of it, we might able to get you some boots from the storeroom down the hall. Surely they'll have some socks in there to go with 'em."

But that doesn't really address the issue of her thinking he needs (or even wants) some kind of repayment, so he's quick to add, "Don't worry about any of it. You remind me of someone from back home, someone who I would hope someone else would help if she showed up here too without anyone she knew, that's all. There's not much to do for any of us but to help each other out when a new person shows up so just pay it forward to one of them when you can. That sound fair enough?"
