TEST DRIVE MEME #8

TEST DRIVE MEME

Welcome to the eighth test drive meme for Abraxas! This meme is run a little bit differently than most in that you'll be asked to choose one of the three different arrival scenarios below for your character to take. If you have any questions about this mechanic or anything else related to the TDM, please take a look at the questions below or ask one of your own under the Questions header below. For general game questions please still use the FAQ.

Our Setting pages are full of information on the world of Abraxas, and an overview of the story so far can be found on our Game History page! Anything on that page - including information about the Horizon and the Singularity - can be assumed to be told to newcomers after they arrive, no matter which faction they are received in. For more information on Ambrose and the apprentice mages, Marlo, and Rowan, please see our NPCs page.

You can also find answers to questions asked on previous TDMs in their respective questions threads.

NOTED CURRENT EVENTS

◎ Rumor has it that two emissaries - a werewolf and a vampire - visited from Nocwich in early July. With them came some wares distributed to shops throughout each faction. A few sparse items may remain for purchase, such as glowing flowers or fine ales, but much of it has now been sold.

◎ New arrivals in THE FREE CITIES may hear a bit of chatter around Cadens about art, politics, and recent performances involving its sister city, Libertas. It's all standard fare - the kind of topics spoken about over a beer or in line at the market - but there's a small stir in the air.

◎ Lately, locals in SOLVUNN have begun to approach the Summoned with a sort of awe and respect. New arrivals will find themselves treated much the same way and may be asked for advice or given gifts that seem like offerings such as wine, harvest bounties, or some delicious goat cheese. Your character is free to turn these down and should they turn down enough people, they will not be bothered further as no one wishes to offend them.

Arrival

You awaken suspended in the abyss, silent darkness stretching out in all directions. If you try to yell, you'll find that the sound doesn't carry. If you try to move, you'll find it's impossible to tell whether or not you're actually getting anywhere. If you reach for an item you were carrying last time you remember being awake, your hand will only touch bare skin.

You're naked and floating helplessly through the void, and what little air you have in your lungs is running out.

There's a pinprick of light that almost looks like a faraway star but as it grows it becomes clear that it's actually quite close. Through the opening you can see a bright room, but it's hard to make out any individual objects, as if you're looking from beneath rippling water.

Scenario One: Welcome to Thorne

A hand plunges through and you realize water is just what it is. Whether you take hold of the hand or not it will grab you and yank you up through the surface, lifting you out until you're sprawled on solid ground. Once you catch your breath, you can get a better look at the surroundings: tall trees and even taller stone pillars surround the platform you're laying on. Behind you is an ornate fountain, the base of which is so deep and so dark you might be compelled to scramble away from it lest it suck you back in to that endless abyss. Ahead of you are the walls of a large castle with several tall towers reaching up towards the sky.

If you had any powers, they feel unusually weak. Attempts to use magic or enhanced strength or powers of any sort fizzle out without any effect, but they don't feel completely gone, either.

Set into an indent on a marble slab behind the fountain is a card bearing the image of one of the arcana.

An apprentice mage - the one whose hand lifted you out of the fountain - brushes the water off on their robes and runs back to join a group of three others, who all stare intently at a mage with highly decorated robes and a large, heavy book. He peers up at you for a moment and starts flipping through the book.

"One moment," he says, not bothering to look up from the tome. He looks tired. "I am Ambrose Rhett, the High Mage of the Kingdom of Thorne. We’ll explain everything in a moment, but for now, please calm down. You’re completely fine."

Regardless of your response, he keeps flipping through the pages, until he stops on one specific passage, stares at it for a moment, and then sighs with relief:

"Finally!"

Ambrose's expression brightens, relief visible across his features. He waves one of the apprentices over with a fine silk tunic, pants, and some basic sandals and with a wave of his hand they reshape to fit you perfectly.

"Oh, thank heavens," he says, closing the book and approaching you with a sort of worn-out relief. “I was beginning to believe we’d never get it exactly right.”

Now that he's not hunching over the book, he doesn't seem quite so stuffy and inapproachable. The apprentices all seem to visibly relax, and the one that handed you the tunic stops to take the tarot card down from the marble slab. If you show any curiosity about the card, they'll let you take a longer look, but won't let you touch it.

"Please, come with me," he says, motioning for you to follow him towards the castle. "As promised, my pupils will explain your current situation. And, ah - if you had any magic of your own, or other special abilities you can't access right now, fear not, they'll return within the week. The summoning takes a lot out of you."

One of the apprentices steps forward and rattles on and on about the castle, Thorne itself, the names of a bunch of royals and nobles, and of course, your reason for being here. The Kingdom and the world itself is in great peril, and tales of your exploits have reached far and wide across universes. If asked about these exploits, the apprentice will simply smile and shrug. The High Mage was happy to see you and that's good enough.

Once inside the castle you're taken to the North Wing, which has been set up as living quarters for you and your fellow newcomers. There are four people to a room, but each generously-sized bed has opaque curtains that can be drawn around it. You can meet your roommates here and discuss your shared situation (those who were previously brought in may have a great deal of information to tell you), or you can wander around and meet the others.

There's also a dining hall stocked with a rotating 24/7 buffet in celebration of the new honored guests. Somehow, your very favorite food is part of the rotation (or at least an attempted recreation of it given the limited technology available to the Thorneans). The town surrounding the castle is all abuzz as well, with most shops and services willing to give free samples of their wares to the new arrivals.

You may also notice that your sign is embroidered on your tunic: the same image you saw on the card from before with the name of the sign itself beneath it. If you ask the castle residents, they'll tell you a little bit about your sign (and will mostly stick to the positives, although some might point out the negatives).

Last (and, if you ask anyone else in the castle, least) there is a worn stone staircase leading underground to the dungeon. You can go there, if you wish, but all powers are restricted in the dungeons and most of the cells stand empty.

Scenario Two: Welcome to the Free Cities

You find yourself pulled from the water by a pair of strong hands. Dry warmth hits you at once as you're set on a warm hard floor. As your senses return you realize you're on dull ruddy stone and surrounded by strangers. Men and women in unfamiliar uniforms of brown and red leather stand in a semi-circle around a small pool of water. The very pool you were just pulled from. The water is still now, rimmed in pale gold tiles with odd symbols etched into them. Across it on the far side is a raised pedestal with a card propped on it. The card bears an arcana symbol.

You feel weak. Drained. Any abilities or magical powers you have seem far away and impossible to access. You're in what looks like a cave lit by dozens and dozens of torches set into the wall. There's no furniture or decoration to be seen besides the pool. It's almost uncomfortably warm and there's the sound of rushing wind somewhere in the distance. Flickering shadows obscure the faces of the guards. A robed woman stands off to the side, looking at you anxiously and then to the authoritative woman standing before you. She's grinning, dressed in a fancier uniform than the others. There's a sword at her hip. A guard covers you with a blanket and returns to their place in the semi-circle.

The woman with the sword gives a nod of approval and smiles warmly.

"Sorry about the circumstances."

She gives you a good hard look before standing again.

"Take a minute, catch your breath, you've had quite a shock. Take it nice and easy. I'm Prime Minister Marlo Reiner and you're in The Free Cities. That nice lady over there will explain everything to you and get you settled." A nod to the robed woman off to the side.

Marlo Reiner steps back and the robed mage approaches to help you up.

"Come with me, please." She brings you out of the cave through a corridor that angles upwards until you emerge in what looks like some kind of storage facility. Shelves of wooden boxes and cloth bags line them, unidentifiable parts of what might be machines are tucked into corners and propped against shelving units. "This is one of the Free Cities' outposts," the mage explains as she leads you. "We're honored to have you with us, I'm sure you have many questions but please save them. You need to recover!"

You'll learn you're in the Cadens Desert Outpost 003, a military outpost on the outskirts of Cadens city. You're brought to a room in the barracks that's been prepared. Each barracks room is rather sparse and utilitarian. Six simple beds set against the wall, three on each side of the room, each with a trunk at the foot of it. You're told the world is in a delicate and dangerous times and you're needed to help. You're important, you're told, and they're very grateful you're here.

You're asked to stay close for the time being, but to make yourself at home. The outpost is more a proper military base than the name implies, with full facilities. The barracks have a communal bathing room at the end of the hall, with curtains that can be pulled around the individual raised round tubs for privacy. There's a mess hall that has food available from sun up till a few hours after sundown. You're even encouraged to make use of the training grounds, if you'd like, with non-lethal training weapons available for use and obstacle courses set up. And the city of Cadens is only a couple of hours away by wagon - though you're asked initially to please be back at the outpost within a few hours of the sun going down.

For your own safety.

Scenario Three: Welcome to Solvunn

The feeling of floating is the first sense that comes to you as the edges of unconsciousness start to ebb. Sunlight filters through the rippling water as you open your eyes, making you squint. Before you have the chance to panic and inhale, firm hands grasp your arms and pull you to the surface of the water. Moments later, soft warmth is wrapped around your shoulders as you're guided on unsteady legs out of a pool of water. You're lowered to the soft grass. Men and women in simple garments with lavish embroidery stand by, waiting with bated breath, glancing seriously at an old man in an ornate robe. He holds an old leather-bound book in one hand and in the other is a card bearing an arcana symbol. His eyes move quickly over the page, and he mumbles idly to himself.

Any strength you may have possessed feels as though it has slipped through your fingers. Any abilities or magical powers you have don't come to the surface no matter how hard you try. You're in a grassy clearing in the midst of a circle of large stone slabs stacked to look like doorways. In the middle is the same glimmering pool you were just pulled from. A gentle breeze blows through, carrying the scent of flowers and herbs from an ornately decorated altar set off in front of one of the stone doorways. The mage closes his book and steps out of the water, addressing a matronly old woman. Behind her are two younger people, a rough-looking man, and a meek young girl, both of whom are also watching the mage.

“I detect no ill will from the gods, it seems we've been blessed with success.” Those that had gathered all breathe a sigh of relief and now seem pleased.

The old woman smiles and steps forward, offering to take your hands and help you stand. “Any gift the gods give us is one we will happily take. I'm certain you have many questions, and they will all be answered in time. For now, rest and know you will be taken care of.”

She pats the top of your hand and steps away with a serene smile, letting one of the others come forward with some clothes that seem to fit you perfectly. Once you're dressed, someone approaches to drape a delicate-looking charm depicting a long-horned creature with large wings on a thin chain over your neck. Ask around later, and you may find that it is a symbol of Vielehauffe, the God of the Herd.

The rough-looking man from before steps forward once you're decent and motions with his head outside of the stone circle. His speech is informal, his consonants harsh.

“Hold your horses, I can see all those questions coming about! Rowan March, at your service. I'm one of the council members of Solvunn. There's a lot to discuss, but it's best talked about over a hot meal.” He leads you to a horse-drawn carriage and helps you up into the back. He talks the entire ride to the settlement.

You find out you are in the Primary Settlement, the first of three that make up Solvunn's great territory. The settlement is situated between two lakes and is humming with life. You're brought to the center of town and escorted to an apartment above one of the establishments in town. Rowan explains that the living conditions are temporary if you'd like them to be, that local families would also be happy to host you in their home. That there are others like you who have also taken up residence within the three settlements. You're told that the world hangs upon the brink of disaster and that there are those in this world that are happy to see it fall to ruin with their meddling.

You're important. The gods have graced them with your presence. They're delighted you're here. Welcome to Solvunn.

Everything you need has been provided in this humble apartment, and if it hasn't, there are shops that line the streets and a marketplace in the center of town. Owners of some establishments or stalls are more than happy to give out samples or barter with your time for their goods. Babysitting can be a very lucrative business. You're told of the other settlements, that they'd like you to stay here for now, but if you can find a family to host you, the secondary and tertiary settlements are best to get to with an escort.

There are tales of travelers visiting the secondary settlement without invitation disappearing without a trace. The gods are as hungry as they are protective, young traveler.

You’ll find that there are more than enough activities to throw yourself into to better settle into your new life in Solvunn. Work is done in the first part of the day so that families can spend the rest of it together in leisure and work on their crafts - whatever those may be. For those children who are not of school age, they need nannies or storytellers, and there’s always a gaggle of them running about unsupervised. Families with livestock can always take a spare hand, especially since farms are so spread out, they have a tendency to wander. Whatever skills you may possess can always be of use to the community or to honor the gods.

If any of these options are no good for your lifestyle, the main roads between settlements can always use a bit of monster clean-up… just make sure you don’t go alone.

Questions

How many slots are open?
Please check the Taken page for how many player, franchise, and canon slots are available. Activity check will be processed before applications open, so the count may change between now and then. Existing players can apply for a second character without restriction.

How do I choose a scenario for my character?
Pick whichever situation appeals to you most. Which faction your character is drawn into has nothing to do with their personal morality, beliefs, or how highly they regard themselves and their own accomplishments. Anyone can be put into any one of the situations.

Can I try out more than one scenario?
You can! But please keep in mind that only the one you eventually choose can be game canon, if you decide to keep any of your TDM threads.

What happens if my character refuses to comply with the NPCs?
They will be forgiven for their moment of panic or anger if they have one, and the faction leaders will try to calm them and persuade them further. If they put up too much of a fight and/or start actively attacking anyone, they will be warned once that everyone is willing to put them back in the well where they came from (see below), and if they continue to fight they will make good on that promise.

My character intends on causing a lot of trouble (destroying parts of the cities, murdering the NPCs, etc.), what would happen to them?
Characters who make too much trouble for the mages and other NPCs would be thrown back in the well (which will mean drowning in the void, not returning home). Brawling with other PCs and causing minor damage is fine and will be greeted with a cranky attitude and intervention from various NPC guards, and there will be plenty of opportunity for destruction and murder later, but for now the Abraxans have no desire to keep huge liabilities around.

I want to wildcard a prompt or use one of the prompts from an earlier TDM that isn't on this one (eg. the library), can I do that?
Yes, in terms of the settings. As Thorne is no longer imprisoning any newcomers, that option is no longer applicable.

Is the power loss for characters permanent?
No, but it does take a week or so for their powers to be back in full, and certain powers (determined on a case-by-case basis) may require nerfs. If your character has world-breaking powers, please discuss with the mods what modifications may be necessary.

Can my character leave the bounds of the faction?
In Thorne, characters can leave the castle but not the city. In Cadens, they can take a trip from the outpost to the city. In Solvunn, they can explore the entirety of the Primary Settlement.

Can my character eventually change factions?
Yes. While the faction borders are currently closed, there will opportunities in the future for characters to relocate. For the time being, they are stuck where they are.

How much will my choice of scenario affect my character's plot later on?
This choice will determine where your character initially lives as well as the bias of the information they receive from NPCs (although other PCs can and most likely will give it to them a bit more straight). This decision - and every other major decision you make in game! - will also be used to flavor some mod surprises that will be coming down the line.

Don't get too anxious about this choice, though; this is just one choice you'll get to make in a game that has a lot of them, and every character in every scenario can work their way towards many, many individual goals and outcomes. You're not locking yourself out of anything in the future via the choice you made on the TDM. It will primarily impact the immediate future with the far-reaching effects being up to each player.

Are TDM threads mandatory for my application?
No, you may use other samples, but we encourage you to post to the TDM and get a feel for this game and its mechanics before you join. If you do not have a TDM thread you will still need to choose one of the three scenarios on your application.

What if I haven't settled on a sign yet?
You can ignore sign-related prompts if you're undecided (or try out different signs in different threads).

Can my character go to the Horizon?
First time visitors to the Horizon must be taken there by other characters, through either shared meditation or a physical journey to the Singularity, and all first-timers experience memory loss. For the purposes of the TDM, we suggest against using the Horizon.

What about making use of the network?
Much like Horizon they would need to be introduced to it by another PC, as no NPCs would be aware of the network or be able to access it. Because of this we would advise against using this mechanic for TDM top-levels.

[For a moment, she looks perplexed about his preface, but all she can do is nod, in the end. Claude is often full of stories and half-truths, but she believes that he would tell the truth when it matters. This is a matter of great import; they are far from home and being asked to fight a war that has nothing to do with them, and she does not think he would lie to her about anything related to that.

Most likely.]

I promise— I will be believing you.

[She is quiet then, offering him her undivided attention as he explains. Her gaze does not waver for even a moment, not until he produces that mirror of his, and when he catches her gaze, she nods once more before following it downwards, fixing her attention on the mirror itself— only to suddenly jerk back in her seat when the stars seem to envelop them.

Oh.]

This— it must be magic!

[While she cannot say she understands the Singularity in full, magic is what immediately comes to mind when she considers what it is capable of, as well. Her eyes are wide with both wonder and curiosity as she scans the projection, an awed smile tugging at one corner of her mouth.]

I believe you, Claude. If this were some kind of trick, it would be a very elaborate one.

[ Urianger is rather modest about his own brilliance, speaking only of their other companions and leaving himself out of it. Thancred can't help but roll his eyes at it, but he won't push it for now. It is true that they would function best as a group with all of them here, each able to bring their own expertise to the table. Yet between the three of them, even if Himeka is in Solvunn, they do cover quite a wide range of skills.

Thancred isn't expecting for Urianger to speak up about the loaf of all things. It is rather odd that such a specific type of food would be available here, though when Urianger suggest that he tries it, Thancred can only pull a face as he shakes his head and sets the bread down. ]

I could truly never understand what all the fuss was about.

[ Scholars. More interested in eating something that would keep them going for another five bells of study, rather than anything such as taste.

There are more important matters to discuss, however, and at Urianger's question Thancred twists his mouth to one side. ]
In a sense, [ he explains after a pause. ] It is another plane of sorts, one within our own minds. It requires meditation to access, and whilst there we can create with simply a thought. We all are granted our own corner of it to make a place for ourselves, which can be filled with aught you desire. The only limit is your own imagination.

[ This will no doubt be of great interest to Urianger, and so Thancred pauses there, granting him a moment to process. ]

[If it's selfish, then Ed's just as bad, because there's absolutely no debate in his mind. If he could only choose one person to be here with him, it'd be a joke to pretend like anyone but Stede is considered for even a second.]

Me too, me too. Must've been around the same time. Guess it's just, you know, lotta ground to cover.

[That and he's been a sulky little wandering loner, but we don't talk about that.]

But we're both here now! Found each other! Worked out alright.

[Siri is it gay to talk about finding each other while gazing into another mans eyes]

( Thancred's explanation about the Horizon pushes all thoughts of Archon Loaf to the side, and the space it creates is immediately filled with the idea of a plane of existence within his own mind. The concept alone is thrilling enough: the process sounds similar to the creation magicks wielded by the Ancients (with some notable differences, of course), and Urianger's expression takes on that glazed, faraway look he gets when he's retreated into some far recess of his mind.

The only limitation is his imagination? What if he were to imagine books he's yet to read? Would the pages be blank? Would the Horizon fill them in with knowledge? If he were to practice his magicks in there, would the skills transfer to reality?
)

Thy revelation raises many questions — and 'tis my suspicion that each answer will raise as many more. Allow me this evening, I prithee, to think upon thy words, that I might present to thee my most important queries upon the next sun.

( If it's taking a lot of effort to hold himself back, it doesn't show — but then Urianger is a seasoned scholar who has had many an explosive revalation in his time. He's learned to be measured about his enthusiasm even when it leaves him tingling all over (as the Horizonvery much does), because rushing in and overwhelming himself and his companions is what leads to mistakes.

Urianger doesn't want to make any mistakes about this, and so Thancred will probably find himself being hand-delivered a near-illegible list of his most pressing questions tomorrow evening. Look forward to that, friend.
)

'Tis not mine intent to overwhelm thee during thy ablutions, after all.

( At which point he reaches for the loaf, a little soggy with steam, and takes a dainty bite. )

[ He can't believe it. Ed was here basically the entire time and he didn't even notice. Stede puts a bad mark on his co-captain resume for this lapse in judgement. Ed's resume can have a free pass this time around.

At least now he can get back to feeling like he's got his head on straight. Another perfectly normal emotion to grapple with in the presence of this one specific friend. How everything is just better and easier and less terrifying when they're around. Any place is instantly improved by existence of Ed.

Source: science. ]

It did work out, didn't it? [ Because here they stand. Achievement unlocked. Heart aflutter, but that's his business. ] I sort of feel bad for giving Beatrice a hard time, now. Who knew she was leading me to something actually worth finding all along?

[ Sort of bad. Not like actually bad. Vaguely bad. Maybe he'll let her have a little more adventure grass as a special treat now that she's his favorite cow. ]

[ When Petra says she believes him, there's a small weight lifted off him as though he was bracing for some other response. Anything, really; there's so many reactions she could've had that would've been all equally reasonable. Then again, being pulled from Fodlan to here through a pool tends to put things in perspective.

Along with that weight lifted his shoulders lose a little of their tension unnoticed even beneath that veneer of a casual act. Crossing convincing Petra of all of this off the list is a start even if he's positive there's other questions yet to come. How could there not be? For now it's enough to watch her study the stars with a small smile of his own on his face - also equally unnoticed. ]

Fortunately for you and rather unfortunately for me, not even I'm that crafty. Though this whole thing seems to be some strange gift from the Singularity, so before too long I'm sure you'll have something too.

[ This ability of his own probably isn't something he should advertise so with some reluctance he closes the mirror to turn their surroundings back into the dining hall around them. Claude doesn't bother to peer this way or that, certain that sudden burst of magic's attracted attention that in retrospect he shouldn't have invited towards either of them. ]

Now feels like a good time to mention that the Free Cities, ah, I suppose the term is frowns upon magic. What they use is geared more towards efficiency in tools and other things used by citizens to get work done or improve lives. I haven't had a chance to see if any is used in healing, so. Professor Manuela would have some thoughts on that. [ A small smile first, then to his actual point. ] I don't know if you learned any magic at the academy, but. Teach made us all learn a few spells just to have backups out on the battlefield, and I haven't used any of it here. Not openly, anyway, other than just making sure they weren't kidding about abilities coming back after arriving.

[ this is weird - that much is a fact steve has accepted, and is in the process of moving on from. this place, this process, the fact eddie is apparently alive and breathing and freaking out - this is colossally weird on a level that steve didn't even know existed. hadn't been aware could exist.

but they are here. eddie the freak munson. and him, far from the king steve eddie knew him as, both of them dressed in some weird theater kid shakespeare outfit and have been told they're chosen by gods and you know what? sure. why not. that's all steve can do at this point to keep himself standing - all he can do to keep this all going. because okay, that's just...that's where they are.

and all things considered, the fact eddie is here probably makes the most sense. so steve will just work with that. no matter where it was they were a week ago, no matter where it was they were hours ago. so he just. doesn't think about it. ]

Yeah, yeah, I think they were calling it Solvunn or something. [ steve doesn't even want to focus on the whole gods bit of it right now, because that's opening up a religious conversation he's not exactly ready to take part in. ] But also like- hell. I'm out here too with a freaking- [ he lifts the plow, considering he doesn't even know what the name of it is, and just sort of shrugs. ]

Either way, I don't think you need to worry about sensibilities. Plus, if anything, there are two of us now. [ which is...officially no longer going anywhere alone. but then steve drops the piece of farming equipment, looking back to eddie. ] Listen, I didn't really understand half of the shit they were saying, but you also heard about them summoning people, right? [ eddie might be able to tell where steve's going with this, but he just has to make sure he's not completely off on every step of the way. ] And if you and I are here...Should we be looking for the others?

I'm pretty sure that's what a tease does...

[ ...Sylvain would probably know, after all.

He had no idea one could play Flirt Chicken, but this is kind of fun. A hint of sly humor enters his gaze and for a moment, he considers doing something outrageous, right there in the middle of the tavern. But instead, he pulls back and props his hands on his hips as he surveys Claude with a deeply appreciative look. He almost regrets not indulging in the outrageous, but... ]

They did mention they've been doing this a lot before we came through. Although most of everyone I saw in the camp either looked new like us, or party of their army. They did mention a city nearby, though. We could check there?

The sound doesn’t pass her lips, but her mouth forms a rather obvious oh-shape of realization as the dots connect now that she’s drawn the lines and made the picture tier clearer. There is no other real surface reaction at the news though. Just that one tiny slip and everything else is neutral.

She can’t hate the job they do— her world may not have literal demons in the same way but she is not unfamiliar with the idea of them. She’s not sure if it’s better that the monsters she knew were only men who let their greed rule them— or worse.

“Inej,” she offers in return. “And it’s good to have people you know here.” Someone she could trust in the sea of the new and the unfamiliar of everything and everyone else here.

There is no part of Kaz that is happy about all of this. Not about being kidnapped. Not about this supposed time discrepancy wherein Jesper and Inej have been here months and yet he had seen them at most two days ago. There's so much about it all that doesn't sit right about it all, especially coming back to why they have been summoning them there.

Yet there is something to be said about a new place with things they've never experienced or heard of before. There's something about a place wherein he might learn what they consider magic and to experience things he hasn't ever had a chance for. Not that he was bored with the Barrel and his life, but that there is something to be said about the excitement of new things. Was it not part of what delighted him about the things they did? A chance to challenge himself and prove what he is capable of? This place seems ready to do that again for him. In spades.

"Seems it may come to that," he says, his voice already naturally low but careful to keep his words from carrying nonetheless. "Nothing good comes from a push to join an Army for a country you don't know and who just drew you from your own world for their battle," he points out, already suspecting that will end up turning ugly, one way or another.

Maybe it's focusing on that which lets Jesper's words catch him off guard so badly. There's almost a look of regret that Wylan isn't there, for their sake as much as for Jesper's alone. He can't stop though the look he gives when he mentions Matthias. A few months difference is one thing. Dead is something else entirely.

"How? Is she certain and it wasn't a game they were playing?" Yet he knows, even as he asks, that it's a stupid question. It's Inej. If there had been doubt, she would have said as much. "They bring us here to fight a war and they can bring the dead back to life somehow?"

There's many things in their world that others could call mystical. Time travel was not among them and his mind could do some fantastic gymnastics but that is not in the loop at this moment.

"So the enemy calls people as well, those who would align with us given a chance. Or be used as bait or blackmail by them," he notes. It would make sense. How do you stop a summoned force who owe no allegiance to anyone really? Find leverage over them. "Everything has a crack someone might get through. We'll figure one out."

Almost off handed but he can tell Jesper would want to consider that and he shall once he knows more about his new home.

A home that contains the past as well.

"You'll teach me this as well. How this Horizon works and how we can use it. Do they have bearing on the world here?"

He sits back. Inej had spoken of this. Now Jesper as well. He folds his bare hands carefully in his lap, just beneath the table where the pale skin is hidden. "If I didn't know better, I might think you both ashamed of the man I've been." Which he doesn't believe, even if he wonders what might happen if that is all the man he is. He became Kaz Brekker when he lost Jordie and maybe they truly were just one and the same, anyone else he might be dead and gone along with the Reitveld name and his brother.

He's already considering the room, given the options and that answer makes him smile. "You spend a lot of time in casinos? I suspect I would have put you dealing on a table at mine," he says, finding it easy to conversational in ways that are almost not rehearsed. Mostly in that its here and no one knows who he is but two people.

He heads for a table though, moving to one in the corner of course. It's a standard operating procedure for many and he even sits in such a way that she isn't forced to put her back to the crowd either.

The look he gives her though is assessing, and maybe even amused though he isn't one much given to smiles. "Seems we share a background in a way then. Including the stupid men in cloaks, though thankfully without the naked kidnapping thing. I'll give them that. It's original and a good way to catch a person off balance." Even one without his phobias.

[ There's a good chance he should be concerned about that slyness that briefly winds its way through Sylvain's expression. It's not unlike what he remembers from the academy - not that he has room to talk thanks to wearing it every bit as often if not more, hence the recognition - but when the other straightens up Claude merely watches. Or plans to, but that begging has to be earned gets an immediate raised eyebrow. ]

Are you revealing the future to me already? That's a bold move.

[ Except for what it's followed up by, because Claude blinks first at the hand held out to him and then up at Sylvain. Before he can ask what even if there's a good chance it's on his face, he gets... a line. One that doesn't line up with what he was expecting with begging being thrown out there, and it successfully catches him off-guard enough that Sylvain gets an actual laugh from him. ]

Wait, I need to know the success rate on this one. [ He's just going to pretend he's not adding to whatever it is by reaching up to claps that offered hand. Just because, and because he definitely isn't going to make any move to get up from where he's sitting. ] How many people have you tried it out on? Please tell me you used it on someone we know because if so, I need to know who.

Jo's eyebrow twitches a little, and so does one side of her mouth. Amused. Even as she takes the pause of Inej's oh for another drink of bourbon. God. That's good. It chases a nice burn. The amusement and the alcohol today. Not knowing the girl, Jo can easily assume she isn't like them, but she wonders what the shape of that surprise is.

If it's her no-need-to-be-cultivated easily passable appearance. There's a definite different look to her than Dean or Cas. Most of the people in their job. Or if Dean's already done himself any number of things to get the job a reputation itself, and by that the assumption on hunters from home.

"Yeah." There's a shake of her head before another quick swallow.
"Two's better than nothing. But not being here would still be better than that."

"Cute," Jo says, one side of her mouth tucked in as she smirks, following him. She doesn't think about the fact that she'd be insulted if someone she knew said that. He doesn't know her. He doesn't know what she does or that beating people at poker is hardly the mark for misconceptions of her. "But I'm better on the other side of the table."

She's been cleaning out hunters two and three times her age since her mid-teens. Pool, poker, shooting games, you name it. Everything they did outside to make money between cases. Give a girl a bar to be born in, an inch of ever-laced biting impatience to get out, and she found her way into and over anything she got interested in that her mother said she shouldn't.

"I'd rather use my poker face with my cards rather than standing around waiting pretty on people who can't keep one to save their lives." She'd rather be back home hunting. She'd rather be playing the perfect sweet poker faces on whoever she needed to get by and getting what she needed to stay on the road, moving from case to case to case.

"I agree," she admits almost brusquely. She has come to a sort of terms about it now, but there is no completely satiating the feeling of being robbed of everything she was meant for, for that new sense of purpose to be yanked out from under her just as the concept of a future was beginning to piece itself together for her.

She shrugs one shoulder, "But wishes never got me anywhere." She wasn't a wishing sort, anyway. Prayer, that's different, though some don't see one as distinct from the other. Many, many prayers were sent to her Saints during her time at The Menagerie.

"I have two from home here as well." An amused little twist quirks her mouth slightly. "Have you met Jesper?" Most everyone meets him first, it's almost a running joke to her by now.

[ Sylvain just grins down at him, just as pleased at the genuine laugh he got in response to that, since that had been his intention anyway.

Clasping Claude's hand, he gives it a tug, a half-hearted attempt to haul him up and out of the chair. But at that question, his expression turns sly again as he arches an eyebrow. And when he counters, it's with an amusing mimicry of Claude's own tone a moment before. ]

Are you suggesting I give my secrets away for free, Riegan? [ A wink. ] A gentleman never kisses and tells.

Jo can appreciate the hard lines and confidence, but she's nowhere near the girl's feelings. Perhaps, even more, rebellious towards it because other people before her have just come, given up holding that torch toward going home, and settled in. Which isn't on her goddamn docket, no matter what Dean said is going to happen to her back home.

As Jo shakes her head, the glass gets tipped at the girl, a simple gesture just in movement with no need. "Can't say as I have? Should I be keeping an eye out for him?"

Beat.

"I've only been here a few hours, so my repertoire of people is slimmer than normal right now." Jo has no doubt she'll collect names, faces, and details as quickly as they start coming at her. She's good at it. Good at people; showing them what they want to see, to get what she wants. Puzzle pieces to fit into the picture of the plan she wasn't about to put down and settle into a new place for.

[ That look on Urianger's face is immediately recognizable, and thus Thancred sinks a bit lower into the bath, allowing the water to lap up around his shoulders for a few moments. He suspects that Urianger is going to want some time to himself to navigate all of the possibilities presented to him by the existence of the Horizon, and therefore is not at all surprised by what he says next.

Soon he will be presented with a list of questions, and then he will have to attempt to answer them. Thancred shuts his eyes and bows his head, preparing himself for the inevitable. Granted, he should have expected this, and that is perhaps the only reason he isn't groaning over it.

Yet when he opens his eyes in time to see Urianger take a bite of that horrible loaf, it's a trial to bite his tongue. ]

There are better things that that to eat here, you know. I'll show you.

[ With that, he forces himself to straighten and then stands, though doesn't give Urianger any sort of warning to avert his gaze. Thancred has little issue with others seeing him naked.

He reaches out for the towel left nearby to wrap around his waist as he steps up and out of the baths. ]

And there is far more to cover. Himeka is not the only other soul here from our home star. Take your time finishing up, but then we should return to my quarters. I'll fill you in on as much as I can.

[She nods her agreement, unable to completely banish her frown despite her general preference for being optimistic whenever possible. It does, at least, seem like they have a solid lead.]

Yes— Cadens, I think. They are saying we need to get back to the outpost before dark, which makes me wonder how dangerous the roads are being, but we are both well-prepared to take care of ourselves.

[Well... mostly. She looks momentarily worried once more.]

Except right now, my strength is lacking. It is strange...

A gift...

[She frowns just a touch as she echoes him, thoughtful once more. Yes, it makes sense, the way he phrases it— while she does not yet understand the concept of the Singularity itself in full, she does know a little something about greater powers granting gifts to mortals.]

The spirits have been known to grant gifts to those they thought worthy, in the past— so it is said in Brigid. Perhaps this is not so different.

[Either way, she's curious to know what might happen to her— though given what he says next about the Free Cities, maybe she shouldn't be so excited.]

I know a little. Not much— the Professor thought it would be wise for me to learn some if I was going to be dancing, but I have not made much use of it. 'Just in case,' she was saying, but if it is dangerous to use such here... that feels very strange. While I have not been using magic much on my own, I am used to friends making use of it on the battlefield, or to mend wounds, as you said. We must keep it secret here, then, even if they are new abilities we are gaining from the Singularity?

Yes, yes, that's very clever of you. [ All in good cheer regarding his own methods being turned right back around on him since Claude's just going to take this as confirmation that the line has worked in prior attempts. At least once... well, not including that he's gone along with it now, mostly. That definitely doesn't count on its own. ] But fine, if not names then I suppose a percentage will do. Would that be less revealing for your disinclination towards kissing and telling?

[ The attempt to get him to stand up was noted even if it wasn't much of one. Line or not, the walk is sounding like a better idea all the time. They've been sitting for quite a while and there's only so much of that he can stand before restlessness kicks in. As he stands up, Claude does let go of Sylvain's hand. Just in case. ]

Either way, I suppose you've decided your fate of staying in Cadens since I'm pretty sure the last wagon back to the barracks left some time ago. If there's no rooms open back at Mag's because others have also arrived then there's a bedroll with your name on it waiting. It's not too far of a walk from here.

[ Just some added clarification about those sleeping arrangements, though Claude plans on taking the bedroll for himself after teasing Sylvain about it given that one of them likely has better sleeping habits than the other. But call it just in case, version two. ]

"I don't doubt that," he says, allowing for that in this case. "But then no one that oversees the tables wants those kinds of people at their table. The point is never to have winners there. Not for long, at least," he says, having been overseeing the Crow Club and other establishments since he was barely a teenager. Not that he still isn't one but he hardly thinks about that.

"Different sides of the establishments and all," he points out. "Not that I have plans to go back to that sort of work here. Considering something new," he admits, not adding that he wouldn't do that to Jesper. "And your plans for not being another pretty face?"

The acts of being social aren't unfamiliar to Kaz, but they come to him as a persona, an act, something he knows he should do but that he isn't entirely good at. But he tries.

No one wants hunters at their table, in their wagers.

They're good because they have to be. There's no job that holds down while you do the work they do. You never know where you might end up in two days' time or if you'll never see a particular state or the whole side of the country for years. Jo's damn proud that she's one of the few that could show up the lion's share of them out before she was even twenty.

She knows the answer to his question as well as she knows her own heartbeat, but she can't help but pull the rug out. It's a whole other brand of what she does best, too.

Jo gives him a pert smile, leaning her cheek into a finger and letting her hair tumble in one direction. It's shameless, with the golden delight of a smirk, and there's not one cent of seriousness in the tone of her voice when she asks, "Is that your smooth way of saying I'm pretty?"

Kaz has dealt with a lot of egos and beautiful people and... well, Nina. He knows that smile and the way she flirts. He's seen that work on so many men who would tumble and fall and lay prostrate at her feet.

He isn't so many men though.

Kaz watches her, his expression transforming from scowling wet cat to something akin to wonderment. Slowly he leans in a bit towards her, ever so careful not to get close enough to touch her. So careful about that despite the ruse. He smiles. It isn't exactly friendly. More a shark showing teeth.

"I wouldn't have thought you insecure enough to need to ask that," he taunts, pushing back to her comment. "Nor dull enough not to know exactly who and what you are."
