[ steve has been out on this road for a couple of hours now. it was the first place where he escaped to, when the settlement had just started to feel a little too weird and a little too stifling. he didn't have much of a plan other than the plow in hand, but there had been mentions of creatures and monsters that sometimes frequented these very roads, and steve just. less so needed to go hit something and more so needed to feel like he was doing literally anything other than sitting there and being preened at.
has he found any monsters at this point? no. has that stopped him yet? also no. does he have any actual idea of what he's doing? somewhat, but not nearly enough, especially where it concerns the forests and grasslands that span either side.
so while rand might have heard something that was distinctly not human, that probably has more to say about how badly steve is doing at tracking whatever animal he himself had heard than anything. because it is steve who comes stumbling out of the brush, very nearly stripping over his own feet and tryin to push away some of the branches and only barely managing to keep balance. he needs another step or two before he gets his feet under him again, looking around him before his eyes fall on the other boy on the road. ]
