When he was young and it became clear that he was the most promising of his generation, Rauf would often instruct the other boys to "watch, and do as Altaïr does." When he grew older and wore the hidden blade as an extension of his own arm, the instructor of novices no longer needed to tell them to do so.
Much has changed since then. Altaïr does not seek anyone's admiration or attention, but he notices he has the latter as he finishes his latest pass around the obstacle course. It doesn't divert him from his chosen activity at first. Faster, sharper — he will not let his skills grow dull just because he has been pulled into what he still scarcely believes is another world.
And then he lifts a hand in greeting to the watcher. There's no overly friendly smile on his face, but he's not unfriendly, either. (He is alone here — if nothing else, he doesn't plan to make enemies unless they deserve it.) Without the leather gauntlet of his hidden blade, it's not hard to see that the raised hand is missing a finger.]
