That moment is the most intimate closeness that Kaz has shared with another in longer than he can imagine. In fairness, all of his intimacy, as much as there has been, has been with the woman sitting above him. A woman as dangerous as she is beautiful.

His breath is quick and rushed, nothing like the careful, controlled breaths that reflect the same as so much of his life. She brings out everything else in him though, all that he's kept so tightly controlled for so long.

His eyes meet hers, the finest hint of uncertainty in his eyes. "And leave you and Jesper without someone to provide for you?" It's a weak joke and he knows it. "We'll see. Though, I have to wonder. What if he is who I am? What then?"

And by that he means, what then with her but he can't help but worry he won't much like her answer.
