He knows the moment she's behind him. She knows every turn of his mind with the barest shift in his expression. Years studying one another means that if anyone knows what they're thinking, it is the other.

That doesn't change him trying to hide that uncertainty, the thoughts that go through his mind. He had brought them to him because of his position, his money, and the weight of his signature. Could he keep them without any of that backing him?

"If someone offers you the world, you shouldn't discourage them."

It's a cheap throw away line, one to avoid emotions and those thoughts in his head. He knows she'll likely know it for what it is as well, but he's already too vulnerable in this place to try and ask about what he's feeling without actually putting it into questions.
