It takes a great deal of magical power to pull off that spell. It shouldn't be possible, at least not this frequently.

[ So these mages are powerful in a way that Istredd is not used to. Something of that magnitude would be extremely difficult and drain even the strongest mages of their lifeforce. All magic requires a price of a kind. But he is in a new magic system. One where someone can do that spell regularly. Fascinating.
