The statue's insides are squishy and wet. If he pushes his hand in far enough, he can reach what appears to be a small metal hook or link. With some effort, he can pull on it to detach the hook which will send entrails spilling out onto the ground, thus freeing the mace attached to the shrine's intestinal "chain".

He might want sever some of the length of intestine to make the mace more usable. The mace head itself pulses like a heartbeat, though the spikes are as sharp and hard as steel.
