Cadfael's active life might have spared him from getting bent by the years passing like some old tree. Still, at well over sixty, he looks his age. He had also noticed that among those the are called the Summoned, he has yet to meet someone as old as he is. It is equally a mystery to him, as what force has brought here all those different people. Only on the Venetian ships sailing the Mediterranean or in the crusading armies has he ever seen such diversity.
