Bucky tries to conceal any outward sign of disappointment at that answer, but he still frowns slightly as he considers its implications.
He recognizes that knowing Natasha doesn't mean he knows this Natasha, and it could be dangerous to conflate the two. If any part of either of their histories was different, they could have led very different lives. But if she recognizes him (arm and all), and she heard about him from Steve, there were some material similarities.
Problem is, Bucky's never liked to think about the person he would have been if he hadn't met Natasha when he did. They might not be together now like they used to be, but he told her once that she was the only bright spot in all of his time as a Soviet operative, and he meant it. She was the only thing that made him feel human.
If there's a Bucky Barnes out there who never met Natasha, Bucky's not sure he'd want to meet him.
"If you only know me from Steve, you should probably take whatever he says with several grains of salt." He offers a self-deprecating smile, leaning against the trailer bed next to her. "If your Steve is anything like the one I know, he's got a bit of a blind spot for me."
