[ It's been a while since Joel has been in a city this big. The Boston QZ is populous, but not like this, and it's certainly not prosperous - despite the fact that there's clearly been some trouble here recently, but definitely not apocalyptic trouble.
He knows better than to gawk, though he's observant, leery. He's very aware of his surroundings, not jumpy, just tracking everything, looking for signs of danger more out of long habit than anything else. Making note of landmarks, that kind of thing. Joel will have a good mental map of the area quickly.
The bar is much the same. He knows how bars work, and he also makes note of all the exits first thing. He still eyes Shepard, though, even as she offers to buy him a beer. Like he's waiting for the catch. ]
