[It's not like Hilda to be this quiet--usually she chatters on while Marianne dutifully listens. Unusual as it is, however, she doesn't call any attention to it. To do so would make things uncomfortable, and that's the last thing she wants right now. Hilda will open up about whatever's the matter when she's ready, and in the meantime Marianne is perfectly fine to relax in silence that's only broken by the occasional instruction from her friend.
