[It's easy enough to melt into the crowds of Cadens when Jacob gets there, two hours later. He gawks at the wonders of the Free Cities, eyes bright with delight at the sight of such new marvels. He's going to like it here, he knows it—Evie would too, he thinks with a pang in his heart. But she's not here, so he takes in the sights alone for the most part.
It was inevitable the parade would draw his attention. He isn't Ned Wynert who's deeply interested in transportation (and the criminal usage thereof), but Jacob knows the future when he sees it, so he pushes through the crowd to get a better view and watch the wagons pass them by. No horses are around to pull these wagons—he's almost gobsmacked to see it.]
Like staring into the future. [Glancing to the side, then nodding to one of the wagons passing by.] That'd make for a lovely tavern. I wonder what's powering them? One of those new internal combustion engines?
[It's magic, but he doesn't know it yet. He's thinking of Pearl Attaway and her internal combustion engines—if they can power an omnibus, he can't see why they can't power these wagons.]
