What little Wrench has been told (and managed to understand) hasn't done much for his understanding of what he ought to be doing. In the absence of a clear path forward, he defaults to what he knows: best to make provisions, and ensure the necessities are covered. He's not convinced yet that anything he might be given won't come at a price higher than what he's willing to pay.
He isn't sure what will grow -- and he certainly doesn't understand the politics of the region -- so Wrench has a small handful of everything. Lettuce, cucumber, and pea starts are almost ready to be grounded, while tomatoes and peppers seem like a sound investment for future months. If he's going to be here that long.
Wrench raises his eyebrows at the man who sidles up next to him in the shop. The words on his lips don't look like anything he's seen, but somehow he understands the last of them. He gestures with one of the starts of peas, not that it looks like very much. Maybe he ought to be looking for a pen and notebook instead... Wrench curls his index finger in on his thumb in a small circle and dots it against one of the leaves.
