Thinking back to the beginning of this whole debacle (and how loud he is in general), Marty's head tilts. He hadn't heard him shouting, hasn't spoken a word, and gestured with his hands...
"Oh," he says, "you can't hear me."
The material in his hand is carefully put down, and Marty frowns, both his hands finding his hips. "He can't hear me." And yet he continues to speak. "Uh..."
Considering it's a worksite, he's sure there must be something around to help. Marty holds up a hand as if telling the man to wait there, then starts poking around. To his great disappointment, he fails to find conventional writing materials.
Fortunately, in about two minutes he's returned with (another) stick and a bundle of relatively large leaves. Then he scrapes some letters into the first one, and the green chlorophyll slices open into browned shapes with the pressure of his writing.
When Marty holds the leaf out, it says: Can you read this?
