By now Wrench has seen all kinds of reactions when people are faced with the realization that talking at him won't yield much headway. He's almost convinced that nothing can surprise him anymore. Whether the man simply walks away, resorts to an over-animated game of charades, or digs in the dirt with the stick in his hand, Wrench can pretty well anticipate it all. So when the younger guy takes off, he folds his arms in a not-quite-patient gesture and waits.
Wrench has plenty more to look at now that he's realized this place might not be as straightforward as he assumed. One snake about means there might be more, so while he keeps a passive eye on trying to figure out what the boy is looking for, he's more concerned about his ankles now.
Of all the things he might've expected, leaves are nowhere on the list. That's a surprising twist. As the stranger makes the first cut to the first leaf and the color starts to transform with his writing, Wrench snorts softly through his nose. He's got to admire the ingenuity. It might not be the most convenient way to communicate, but it's sure cool. And there are no shortage of leaves around. He squints at the words and nods affirmatively.
Thanks for He doesn't finish writing the rest, just shows the leaf and points to the crushed snake.
