smilefornow: (feeling that numb)

I suppose it is lambs to the slaughter, not goats.

[Arthur has a passing familiarity with the Bible, and a solid understanding of the symbolism of lamb imagery in literature, but he's never really given the saying any thought. It was just one of those things. But this strange-eyed stranger has a point. Sheep imply a sort of obedience...hadn't he compared the other Wellies to sheep on more than one occasion? Funny to think it was rooted in actual nature.

He sets the rake back in its place but lingers. It's still so terribly appealing, just talking to other people. Who aren't full of radically mind altering drugs and have things to talk about besides the television or popular music or how nice a day it is.

And this man is interesting. No one talks about this sort of thing back in Wellington. Hardly anyone back there has any mind left, and certainly not any mind for philosophical conversations about the laws of nature.]

Lambs always mean innocence. In books and poetry, I mean, symbolism and, ah, as you say 'metaphorical whatsits'. Sheep always mean ignorance. Sort of the same thing, in a way, when you think about it. One just sounds more kind.
