Very, there are a lot of useful spells, so it's worth the time. If you can stomach rote memorization.

Doing a bit of both would be best. Most of the mages are fine with teaching Summoned. Some more enthusiastic than others. But you'd better off just asking for Istredd. He's one of us, and knows how to explain things to people who never had to deal with magic.
