[ Ah, there it is.

Cid feels like an arsehole all of a sudden, likely because that's what he's been. Funny how that works.

He takes another breath as he watches Clive crouch down beside the dog, the two of them looking sad and small despite their size. He crushes the cigar in his hand, turning it to cinders with a spark.

It's a long moment before Cid speaks again, but his anger has fled to wherever it is Clive's has gone. ]
We're too much alike, is our problem.

[ He walks toward the two of them, crouching down despite the way his knees complain about it. He pats Torgal's shoulder. ] I should be grateful you've not ended up a stubborn old fool, despite that.

[ As far as apologies go... it's not good. But it's the best he can do. It isn't the only thing he plans to offer, at least. ]

I've been thinking since they dragged my bones out of the lifestream. This world... it isn't the one we left. To assume that we know what it wants or needs from us is worse than knowing nothing about it. [ Cid rubs at the scruff of his own beard, sighing against his hand. ]

I can't promise you'll not have to make that choice again someday — I can't know that — but I do know this: you'll never give that girl up without a fight, no matter how hopeless the odds. That was the first thing I ever learned about you, and I can't see that it's changed, or that she feels any different than you.

[ He shakes his head. ] I don't know what we're meant to do with this borrowed time, or how much of it we've got... but this time around, let's see if we can't save your world while we're bothered with the rest of it. Who's to say that bit of the future shouldn't come back from the grave with us?
