That's partly correct, in that characters will not develop a countering ability if they are choosing to encourage the afflictions. However, the countering ability does not need to exclusively be the blessing aspect nor does it have to be based on the AU. #4 in the Q&A may provide more details to your questions!

For characters who encourage the affliction, as noted, they will begin to emanate an influence ability similar to the Herald assigned to their territory (or the fourth Herald) so this will be what they "gain" instead. If you wish to flavor it based on something from the AU, you're welcome to do so, but the ability at its core should align with one of the Herald effects they are attempting to enhance.
