When Martin sneaks outside, there are a few things he'll be witness to. First, there will be a wind that doesn't seem to be coming from any one direction. If he listens closely, there can be whispers heard being carried on the wind, though he won't be able to make out what's being said. Second, he will have the overwhelming feeling of being watched, and he may notice that the light doesn't seem to travel as far as it should.
