He watches the stubborn set to her mouth, the sarcasm dripping from her voice. She's young, too young to have learned the hard lesson that there's always something worse. The lesson of patience and biding time until chance and change comes closer. When she dies at ninety, she might still be too young to have learned, and he pushes off of the wall.

"Why would they make anything up to us? They seem to owe us nothing, and the sun is a kindness. I have no doubt that we will pay for that kindness one way or another."
