TEST DRIVE MEME #8

TEST DRIVE MEME

Welcome to the eighth test drive meme for Abraxas! This meme is run a little bit differently than most in that you'll be asked to choose one of the three different arrival scenarios below for your character to take. If you have any questions about this mechanic or anything else related to the TDM, please take a look at the questions below or ask one of your own under the Questions header below. For general game questions please still use the FAQ.

Our Setting pages are full of information on the world of Abraxas, and an overview of the story so far can be found on our Game History page! Anything on that page - including information about the Horizon and the Singularity - can be assumed to be told to newcomers after they arrive, no matter which faction they are received in. For more information on Ambrose and the apprentice mages, Marlo, and Rowan, please see our NPCs page.

You can also find answers to questions asked on previous TDMs in their respective questions threads.

NOTED CURRENT EVENTS

◎ Rumor has it that two emissaries - a werewolf and a vampire - visited from Nocwich in early July. With them came some wares distributed to shops throughout each faction. A few sparse items may remain for purchase, such as glowing flowers or fine ales, but much of it has now been sold.

◎ New arrivals in THE FREE CITIES may hear a bit of chatter around Cadens about art, politics, and recent performances involving its sister city, Libertas. It's all standard fare - the kind of topics spoken about over a beer or in line at the market - but there's a small stir in the air.

◎ Lately, locals in SOLVUNN have begun to approach the Summoned with a sort of awe and respect. New arrivals will find themselves treated much the same way and may be asked for advice or given gifts that seem like offerings such as wine, harvest bounties, or some delicious goat cheese. Your character is free to turn these down and should they turn down enough people, they will not be bothered further as no one wishes to offend them.

Arrival

You awaken suspended in the abyss, silent darkness stretching out in all directions. If you try to yell, you'll find that the sound doesn't carry. If you try to move, you'll find it's impossible to tell whether or not you're actually getting anywhere. If you reach for an item you were carrying last time you remember being awake, your hand will only touch bare skin.

You're naked and floating helplessly through the void, and what little air you have in your lungs is running out.

There's a pinprick of light that almost looks like a faraway star but as it grows it becomes clear that it's actually quite close. Through the opening you can see a bright room, but it's hard to make out any individual objects, as if you're looking from beneath rippling water.

Scenario One: Welcome to Thorne

A hand plunges through and you realize water is just what it is. Whether you take hold of the hand or not it will grab you and yank you up through the surface, lifting you out until you're sprawled on solid ground. Once you catch your breath, you can get a better look at the surroundings: tall trees and even taller stone pillars surround the platform you're laying on. Behind you is an ornate fountain, the base of which is so deep and so dark you might be compelled to scramble away from it lest it suck you back in to that endless abyss. Ahead of you are the walls of a large castle with several tall towers reaching up towards the sky.

If you had any powers, they feel unusually weak. Attempts to use magic or enhanced strength or powers of any sort fizzle out without any effect, but they don't feel completely gone, either.

Set into an indent on a marble slab behind the fountain is a card bearing the image of one of the arcana.

An apprentice mage - the one whose hand lifted you out of the fountain - brushes the water off on their robes and runs back to join a group of three others, who all stare intently at a mage with highly decorated robes and a large, heavy book. He peers up at you for a moment and starts flipping through the book.

"One moment," he says, not bothering to look up from the tome. He looks tired. "I am Ambrose Rhett, the High Mage of the Kingdom of Thorne. We’ll explain everything in a moment, but for now, please calm down. You’re completely fine."

Regardless of your response, he keeps flipping through the pages, until he stops on one specific passage, stares at it for a moment, and then sighs with relief:

"Finally!"

Ambrose's expression brightens, relief visible across his features. He waves one of the apprentices over with a fine silk tunic, pants, and some basic sandals and with a wave of his hand they reshape to fit you perfectly.

"Oh, thank heavens," he says, closing the book and approaching you with a sort of worn-out relief. “I was beginning to believe we’d never get it exactly right.”

Now that he's not hunching over the book, he doesn't seem quite so stuffy and inapproachable. The apprentices all seem to visibly relax, and the one that handed you the tunic stops to take the tarot card down from the marble slab. If you show any curiosity about the card, they'll let you take a longer look, but won't let you touch it.

"Please, come with me," he says, motioning for you to follow him towards the castle. "As promised, my pupils will explain your current situation. And, ah - if you had any magic of your own, or other special abilities you can't access right now, fear not, they'll return within the week. The summoning takes a lot out of you."

One of the apprentices steps forward and rattles on and on about the castle, Thorne itself, the names of a bunch of royals and nobles, and of course, your reason for being here. The Kingdom and the world itself is in great peril, and tales of your exploits have reached far and wide across universes. If asked about these exploits, the apprentice will simply smile and shrug. The High Mage was happy to see you and that's good enough.

Once inside the castle you're taken to the North Wing, which has been set up as living quarters for you and your fellow newcomers. There are four people to a room, but each generously-sized bed has opaque curtains that can be drawn around it. You can meet your roommates here and discuss your shared situation (those who were previously brought in may have a great deal of information to tell you), or you can wander around and meet the others.

There's also a dining hall stocked with a rotating 24/7 buffet in celebration of the new honored guests. Somehow, your very favorite food is part of the rotation (or at least an attempted recreation of it given the limited technology available to the Thorneans). The town surrounding the castle is all abuzz as well, with most shops and services willing to give free samples of their wares to the new arrivals.

You may also notice that your sign is embroidered on your tunic: the same image you saw on the card from before with the name of the sign itself beneath it. If you ask the castle residents, they'll tell you a little bit about your sign (and will mostly stick to the positives, although some might point out the negatives).

Last (and, if you ask anyone else in the castle, least) there is a worn stone staircase leading underground to the dungeon. You can go there, if you wish, but all powers are restricted in the dungeons and most of the cells stand empty.

Scenario Two: Welcome to the Free Cities

You find yourself pulled from the water by a pair of strong hands. Dry warmth hits you at once as you're set on a warm hard floor. As your senses return you realize you're on dull ruddy stone and surrounded by strangers. Men and women in unfamiliar uniforms of brown and red leather stand in a semi-circle around a small pool of water. The very pool you were just pulled from. The water is still now, rimmed in pale gold tiles with odd symbols etched into them. Across it on the far side is a raised pedestal with a card propped on it. The card bears an arcana symbol.

You feel weak. Drained. Any abilities or magical powers you have seem far away and impossible to access. You're in what looks like a cave lit by dozens and dozens of torches set into the wall. There's no furniture or decoration to be seen besides the pool. It's almost uncomfortably warm and there's the sound of rushing wind somewhere in the distance. Flickering shadows obscure the faces of the guards. A robed woman stands off to the side, looking at you anxiously and then to the authoritative woman standing before you. She's grinning, dressed in a fancier uniform than the others. There's a sword at her hip. A guard covers you with a blanket and returns to their place in the semi-circle.

The woman with the sword gives a nod of approval and smiles warmly.

"Sorry about the circumstances."

She gives you a good hard look before standing again.

"Take a minute, catch your breath, you've had quite a shock. Take it nice and easy. I'm Prime Minister Marlo Reiner and you're in The Free Cities. That nice lady over there will explain everything to you and get you settled." A nod to the robed woman off to the side.

Marlo Reiner steps back and the robed mage approaches to help you up.

"Come with me, please." She brings you out of the cave through a corridor that angles upwards until you emerge in what looks like some kind of storage facility. Shelves of wooden boxes and cloth bags line them, unidentifiable parts of what might be machines are tucked into corners and propped against shelving units. "This is one of the Free Cities' outposts," the mage explains as she leads you. "We're honored to have you with us, I'm sure you have many questions but please save them. You need to recover!"

You'll learn you're in the Cadens Desert Outpost 003, a military outpost on the outskirts of Cadens city. You're brought to a room in the barracks that's been prepared. Each barracks room is rather sparse and utilitarian. Six simple beds set against the wall, three on each side of the room, each with a trunk at the foot of it. You're told the world is in a delicate and dangerous times and you're needed to help. You're important, you're told, and they're very grateful you're here.

You're asked to stay close for the time being, but to make yourself at home. The outpost is more a proper military base than the name implies, with full facilities. The barracks have a communal bathing room at the end of the hall, with curtains that can be pulled around the individual raised round tubs for privacy. There's a mess hall that has food available from sun up till a few hours after sundown. You're even encouraged to make use of the training grounds, if you'd like, with non-lethal training weapons available for use and obstacle courses set up. And the city of Cadens is only a couple of hours away by wagon - though you're asked initially to please be back at the outpost within a few hours of the sun going down.

For your own safety.

Scenario Three: Welcome to Solvunn

The feeling of floating is the first sense that comes to you as the edges of unconsciousness start to ebb. Sunlight filters through the rippling water as you open your eyes, making you squint. Before you have the chance to panic and inhale, firm hands grasp your arms and pull you to the surface of the water. Moments later, soft warmth is wrapped around your shoulders as you're guided on unsteady legs out of a pool of water. You're lowered to the soft grass. Men and women in simple garments with lavish embroidery stand by, waiting with bated breath, glancing seriously at an old man in an ornate robe. He holds an old leather-bound book in one hand and in the other is a card bearing an arcana symbol. His eyes move quickly over the page, and he mumbles idly to himself.

Any strength you may have possessed feels as though it has slipped through your fingers. Any abilities or magical powers you have don't come to the surface no matter how hard you try. You're in a grassy clearing in the midst of a circle of large stone slabs stacked to look like doorways. In the middle is the same glimmering pool you were just pulled from. A gentle breeze blows through, carrying the scent of flowers and herbs from an ornately decorated altar set off in front of one of the stone doorways. The mage closes his book and steps out of the water, addressing a matronly old woman. Behind her are two younger people, a rough-looking man, and a meek young girl, both of whom are also watching the mage.

“I detect no ill will from the gods, it seems we've been blessed with success.” Those that had gathered all breathe a sigh of relief and now seem pleased.

The old woman smiles and steps forward, offering to take your hands and help you stand. “Any gift the gods give us is one we will happily take. I'm certain you have many questions, and they will all be answered in time. For now, rest and know you will be taken care of.”

She pats the top of your hand and steps away with a serene smile, letting one of the others come forward with some clothes that seem to fit you perfectly. Once you're dressed, someone approaches to drape a delicate-looking charm depicting a long-horned creature with large wings on a thin chain over your neck. Ask around later, and you may find that it is a symbol of Vielehauffe, the God of the Herd.

The rough-looking man from before steps forward once you're decent and motions with his head outside of the stone circle. His speech is informal, his consonants harsh.

“Hold your horses, I can see all those questions coming about! Rowan March, at your service. I'm one of the council members of Solvunn. There's a lot to discuss, but it's best talked about over a hot meal.” He leads you to a horse-drawn carriage and helps you up into the back. He talks the entire ride to the settlement.

You find out you are in the Primary Settlement, the first of three that make up Solvunn's great territory. The settlement is situated between two lakes and is humming with life. You're brought to the center of town and escorted to an apartment above one of the establishments in town. Rowan explains that the living conditions are temporary if you'd like them to be, that local families would also be happy to host you in their home. That there are others like you who have also taken up residence within the three settlements. You're told that the world hangs upon the brink of disaster and that there are those in this world that are happy to see it fall to ruin with their meddling.

You're important. The gods have graced them with your presence. They're delighted you're here. Welcome to Solvunn.

Everything you need has been provided in this humble apartment, and if it hasn't, there are shops that line the streets and a marketplace in the center of town. Owners of some establishments or stalls are more than happy to give out samples or barter with your time for their goods. Babysitting can be a very lucrative business. You're told of the other settlements, that they'd like you to stay here for now, but if you can find a family to host you, the secondary and tertiary settlements are best to get to with an escort.

There are tales of travelers visiting the secondary settlement without invitation disappearing without a trace. The gods are as hungry as they are protective, young traveler.

You’ll find that there are more than enough activities to throw yourself into to better settle into your new life in Solvunn. Work is done in the first part of the day so that families can spend the rest of it together in leisure and work on their crafts - whatever those may be. For those children who are not of school age, they need nannies or storytellers, and there’s always a gaggle of them running about unsupervised. Families with livestock can always take a spare hand, especially since farms are so spread out, they have a tendency to wander. Whatever skills you may possess can always be of use to the community or to honor the gods.

If any of these options are no good for your lifestyle, the main roads between settlements can always use a bit of monster clean-up… just make sure you don’t go alone.

Questions

How many slots are open?
Please check the Taken page for how many player, franchise, and canon slots are available. Activity check will be processed before applications open, so the count may change between now and then. Existing players can apply for a second character without restriction.

How do I choose a scenario for my character?
Pick whichever situation appeals to you most. Which faction your character is drawn into has nothing to do with their personal morality, beliefs, or how highly they regard themselves and their own accomplishments. Anyone can be put into any one of the situations.

Can I try out more than one scenario?
You can! But please keep in mind that only the one you eventually choose can be game canon, if you decide to keep any of your TDM threads.

What happens if my character refuses to comply with the NPCs?
They will be forgiven for their moment of panic or anger if they have one, and the faction leaders will try to calm them and persuade them further. If they put up too much of a fight and/or start actively attacking anyone, they will be warned once that everyone is willing to put them back in the well where they came from (see below), and if they continue to fight they will make good on that promise.

My character intends on causing a lot of trouble (destroying parts of the cities, murdering the NPCs, etc.), what would happen to them?
Characters who make too much trouble for the mages and other NPCs would be thrown back in the well (which will mean drowning in the void, not returning home). Brawling with other PCs and causing minor damage is fine and will be greeted with a cranky attitude and intervention from various NPC guards, and there will be plenty of opportunity for destruction and murder later, but for now the Abraxans have no desire to keep huge liabilities around.

I want to wildcard a prompt or use one of the prompts from an earlier TDM that isn't on this one (eg. the library), can I do that?
Yes, in terms of the settings. As Thorne is no longer imprisoning any newcomers, that option is no longer applicable.

Is the power loss for characters permanent?
No, but it does take a week or so for their powers to be back in full, and certain powers (determined on a case-by-case basis) may require nerfs. If your character has world-breaking powers, please discuss with the mods what modifications may be necessary.

Can my character leave the bounds of the faction?
In Thorne, characters can leave the castle but not the city. In Cadens, they can take a trip from the outpost to the city. In Solvunn, they can explore the entirety of the Primary Settlement.

Can my character eventually change factions?
Yes. While the faction borders are currently closed, there will opportunities in the future for characters to relocate. For the time being, they are stuck where they are.

How much will my choice of scenario affect my character's plot later on?
This choice will determine where your character initially lives as well as the bias of the information they receive from NPCs (although other PCs can and most likely will give it to them a bit more straight). This decision - and every other major decision you make in game! - will also be used to flavor some mod surprises that will be coming down the line.

Don't get too anxious about this choice, though; this is just one choice you'll get to make in a game that has a lot of them, and every character in every scenario can work their way towards many, many individual goals and outcomes. You're not locking yourself out of anything in the future via the choice you made on the TDM. It will primarily impact the immediate future with the far-reaching effects being up to each player.

Are TDM threads mandatory for my application?
No, you may use other samples, but we encourage you to post to the TDM and get a feel for this game and its mechanics before you join. If you do not have a TDM thread you will still need to choose one of the three scenarios on your application.

What if I haven't settled on a sign yet?
You can ignore sign-related prompts if you're undecided (or try out different signs in different threads).

Can my character go to the Horizon?
First time visitors to the Horizon must be taken there by other characters, through either shared meditation or a physical journey to the Singularity, and all first-timers experience memory loss. For the purposes of the TDM, we suggest against using the Horizon.

What about making use of the network?
Much like Horizon they would need to be introduced to it by another PC, as no NPCs would be aware of the network or be able to access it. Because of this we would advise against using this mechanic for TDM top-levels.

It's a good thing you didn't. It would be a good excuse to keep you there.

[ If she attacked after getting out of the water, anyone could understand that. But Istredd is slightly paranoid of the situation they're in. Trapping one of the Summoned would probably be easier than following all of them. He is suspicious they're just letting them leave, but he isn't going to think too much on it. As long as it gets him out.

He meets her gaze with his own, calm. ]

I'm Istredd. I'm a mage and historian in my world. Although my powers have not returned just yet.

[ They said they would and he has to be patient, but it is difficult to lose something that has always been with him. Even when he was too young to use them, he felt something different in his body, a power that never wavered. There is only emptiness where it lies, although with each passing day he can feel it start to unfurl. He has never been reliant on magic but he still wants it back.

Historian probably doesn't sound that exciting to anyone outside of the field, but he loves it, and now he has a whole new history to learn. ]

And you?

Around the castle

Stripped of her clothes, of her family and her triad, and finding herself running around in some kind of Dungeons and Dragons fantasy, it's easy to say that Isobel is far from happy with life right now.

Learning that she's not able to so much as move a feather - or in this case a pillow filled with them but same difference - and she's fairly livid. How dare they take away her birth gift from her mother and her people? A gift she's only recently come to truly embrace and cherish as part of her right in this world as a woman warrior.

She's wandered and asked questions and sought out as many answers as she can get while trying not to be obviously looking for others. But she misses them and she misses her life that she was just building for herself and so she's not in the best of moods even if she's trying.

So when someone asks about the Singularity, she lifts her head with a sharp look. "What I've heard if they're basically copying the gift I've had since I emerged and have somehow blocked me from using it on my own." She gives him a look. "You?"

[ The thought is sobering. Claire... will be the first to admit - to herself, not to anyone else - that she hadn't even thought quite that far ahead. But he's right, and that does make her wonder. About any perceived freedom. The supposed 'honor' of their presence.

All a bunch of bullshit, if you ask Claire. They've been drafted, no two ways about it from where she's standing. Or sitting, as it were. ]

Yeah, I hear you. I feel about ready to keel over. [ Not that she had any powers to lose - but the exhaustion is real. ] Name's Claire. I kill monsters.

[ Don't worry Istredd, she's not a Witcher.

Yet. ]

[ It isn't that he likes her snappy tone or when she tries to dig at him, it is simply who she is, and Istredd knows that. Even before she became a full mage and everything that came with it, his sweet Yenna had a sharp tongue on her too. She used it more to aim at Tissaia and the frustration she felt that it was never easy for her, not yet. He liked her spitfire ways. When it turned on him, when he was on the other side of that viciousness, it hurt like nothing else ever could. But unfortunately for him, every part of her adds up to the woman he's been in love with for decades.

But he is practiced at distracting himself with knowledge instead. And there is so much about this place that has engaged his mind. Istredd could never resist a mystery and a constant seeking of truth. It will be easy for the two of them to be on the same page about that, and anyone else here focused on that. ]

Kylo Ren. I'll remember that.

[ Istredd will seek him out as soon as possible, although he will not know the best approach to him until that happens. He is not the most popular person amongst the mages, since he often is far away from the others and too obsessed with his books and monoliths. But no one dislikes him either, he's more like a footnote. He may have to trot out some diplomacy here, and that is fine. He knows how to do it.

He is about to answer the friend part, perhaps about to do his own little barb about how many witchers is she friends with, in a very emphasized and judgmental tone that attempts to hide his jealousy and fails. Istredd used to fight that feeling, but now it seems impossible. Might as well live with it. But then they are in an unexpected chamber and he looks around. Interesting. He can sense the magic that is blocking out the inside, he would not have bothered trying to get in if he wasn't with her.

Istredd can look around here later but for now he focuses on Yennefer, who let's face it, usually gets all of his attention even when his mind is split. He can tell she's defensive and forcefully pushes down his own reaction to be just as defensive. ]

Triss sent Geralt to me to inquire about monoliths. I thought it very strange in the start, but it ended up being relevant. I was in Cintra. [ Waiting for her. ] He told me the monolith there was demolished, and I saw it for myself when we got there. Broken but it also cracked the earth around it, the amount of power to make that happen ... it seemed impossible.

[ Despite now knowing about Princess Cirilla and her elder blood, it still feels like power beyond his understanding. But with her behind the elves? It could be all they need. ]

We discovered the monoliths may be conduits and portals to other spheres. Now that I'm here, and I've heard of the Singularity, it is difficult not to imagine the parallels.

[ It could be a reach, or this could be meant to be. He won't know until he sees it for himself. ]

[ Istredd doesn't know yet what they expect from them. The confusing part is they let them leave so freely, with not explanation as to what part they expect them to play. He just wants to get to the libraries, there are apparently many of them, and he has to soak in the information here. There is a reason they are here. He thinks perhaps research will give that answer. ]

It takes a great deal of magical power to pull off that spell. It shouldn't be possible, at least not this frequently.

[ So these mages are powerful in a way that Istredd is not used to. Something of that magnitude would be extremely difficult and drain even the strongest mages of their lifeforce. All magic requires a price of a kind. But he is in a new magic system. One where someone can do that spell regularly. Fascinating.

He doesn't look surprised about her job title. ]

A pleasure to meet you, Claire, under the circumstances. We have monster killers where I'm from too. They're called witchers, a rare breed of fighters.

[ And he means breed. They aren't fully human. ]

Istredd has less to miss and this place is becoming more interesting by the day. He was in the middle of something important, but he was just the messenger, so if they continue on without his presence, it'll be fine. The only person he cares about on a personal level is Yennefer, who is here, and always, always complicated. So he's taken this with relative ease compared to others. A castle with mages and books? Home sweet home.

The Singularity has become his focus after reading many books, and Istredd has a tendency to get obsessive about unknown magical entities. There is not enough about it, it seems like one of those things only people in power can fully answer, and he is too new.

"They say our abilities will return. Although the when is unclear." Istredd may not trust them in many ways, but in that, it makes the most sense. It would be foolish to promise that and not deliver, right away being revealed as untrustworthy liars. But he misses the magic at his fingertips. He has never been powerless before.

"The Singularity is the center of magical energy in this world. And they say it is connected to all other worlds, ours included." Theoretically!

[ and that's exactly the point - istredd has always known who yennefer was, one of the few who had a view into the before and the after (at least, until that blasted first horizon trip). and somewhere wrapped in that is yennefer's comfort in knowing it. in knowing that istredd does know all of those pieces of her, someone who yennefer really doesn't so much as bother to pretend to be anything other than the sharp wit, the edged words, the anger and the desperation and the hunger that she has always had.

( somehow, he is still here. )

yennefer snorts, briefly, at his comment. at the i'll remember that, if only because the image in her mind of the two of them meeting is as awkward and confusing as ever. ]

He's a hard man to miss. [ both in size and reputation, but yennefer doesn't bother adding any additional insight to that. instead, she lets the words hang, her mind shifting entirely to geralt, to the fact istredd knows him, to whatever godsforsaken reason they would have to cross paths. despite her best efforts, some part of yennefer feels wronged, and annoyed - what right did the two of them have to cross paths? what were they doing? she's glad that they've made it into the relative safety of this room, now, because there is no longer a need to keep up that lady yennefer, all pretenses and lies falling to the wayside. ]

Triss sent him to you? [ that anger almost immediately dissipates, as it usually does where it concerns triss. she'd known of triss and geralt's previous interactions, had warned triss away from continued contact with him for...well. a variety of reasons. but knowing that triss sent geralt to him makes her think-

no. there's no real purpose to go down that road. it won't change where things stand. and then istredd keeps talking, says i was in cintra and yennefer's chest does tighten at the thought. that he was waiting for her, hoping she'd made it across the continent to the city. but the monolith, the shattered stone... yennefer frowns, trying to and thinking she may be making the connection, but still somehow confused as to why. why would geralt care about monoliths? from what she has heard, his entire focus during this time, while he was home, it was ciri. keeping her safe, keeping her protected, keeping her-

yennefer pauses for a moment, realizing. oh. oh.

but she doesn't say this aloud, because there's no reason for istredd to know, is there? and this- this opens doors. explains more than anything yennefer had even considered. she tucks it away for now, blinking once to bring herself back to istredd's words. ]

It follows a lot of what we do know about the Singularity here, yes. Though the chaos that it collects exceeds anything the monoliths back in our sphere could ever be. While it acts as a portal to bring us here, it also keeps its connection to us, too. Its magic has influence over us, over all the chaos across the continent. [ but she supposes he'll figure that all out on his own. she shakes her head, turning to walk over to the table in the center of the room, reaching for the pitcher of wine that kylo keeps stocked and pouring herself a glass - because she needs one, if they're going to have this conversation. ]

There are just about fifty of us Summoned here, spread out across the Continent. The three main kingdoms - Thorne being one - all have their different reasons for Summoning, but the cycle is fairly consistent. You're part of the new group that has just come through.

[ might as well get this all out of the way. ]

[personal profile] beherownperson 2022-07-31 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"They better," she says, giving him a long and curious look. So many here seem so eager to throw themselves into this and she's really not sure she's on that list. Not yet. And they're discussing the main reason why. "Seems like a bad choice to screw with people like that while hoping for their help. I'm really not feeling it yet though."

Not that she's seeing them having a lot of choices in it yet. But it's easier to talk of it this way rather than the way being powerless makes her feel. Maybe she hasn't used them as much as she could but they were hers and she is just coming into the totality of her abilities and she isn't ready to be without them.

That though catches her curiosity, even if he gets a skeptical look. "Seems unlikely it's a two way door though, don't you think? Seems a lot of trouble to bring us here to give us an easy connecting to home. Though, in fairness, it's what I would tell people too. Keep their hopes up and all."

[ He cocks his head slightly to the other man's reply, finding a seat on the opposite side of the table. He glances at the book in his hands before letting his gaze flick back up to his face, studying his features. For a split second the bright blue of his eyes reminds him too much of someone else. He shifts his attention back to the uneaten strawberries in his palm, absently lining them up in a row as he pushes back a sharp pull in his chest. ]

Where have you come from? [ The only people he's met so far either hail from this world, or Nayeshi.

There's nothing in Payshmura scripture that describes any worlds beyond Basawar and Nayeshi. Another man might have his faith shaken, but his world was already turned upside down two years ago. It was Parfir's will that he survived then, and his will that he survives now. His confusion doesn't change that fact. ]

Good point.

[ Cal may sometimes eat something that he knows is going to upset his stomach, as if doing so for the fifth or sixth time will suddenly make his stomach accept it, so he wouldn't call himself a picky eater either. Maybe a wreckless one. Greez's cooking didn't help. It's good, but also sometimes...punishing. ]

I wonder how they...did this. [ He scans over the table of food again, this time with a slightly more critical eye. ] This is a lot of food from a lot of different places. Even have space waffles.

[ He is taking one of those thank you very much. ]

[ Istredd has yet to leave her, not truly, and he certainly won't because of the things about her that might not be pretty. For better or for worse, everything she is he loves. It may keep him from thinking they are right for each other, now that so many years have passed, but it doesn't stop him from loving her as she is. Sometimes you can love someone and still know you are too different. He does struggle with her hunger for power, but he remembers when she was powerless. It makes him bitter at times, but he understands, he'll always understand. ]

I thought it was very strange of Triss to do too, but I understood more on our journey.

[ He thought for a moment Triss was being strange, but he trusts her too, of all the sorceresses. If she thought they had to talk, she had good reason to. She is not a jokester or a frivolous person. Istredd had never met a witcher before, and he still doesn't know entirely what he thinks of the man. He has access to the girl who opened the monoliths. That is what he was doing there, and Istredd now understands that. He isn't angry. There must be reasons, but it doesn't matter compared to what he found out.

He considers what she is saying, rubbing a hand across his bearded chin. Istredd takes in all the information before responding, although his mind is working, churning, as it always is. ]

But that would make sense if their theory of it being connected to all worlds is correct. If all magic is connected here, that would make it the source, and anything would go on its hold on magical influence. It may be this world has not seen even a fraction of its capabilities.

[ Where that might seem overwhelming and unnerving to others, it only seems to make Istredd's eyes brighter, his mind work faster in speculation. She knows how he can be with these things. Even after being proven wrong about the monoliths, he didn't see it as a failure of his life's work and studies. Only an opening for greater understanding. Just as he knows her like no one else, she knows him. Perhaps finding an answer to this Singularity can fix other fractures in the world.

He watches her pour wine, knowing that their conversations are fraught, even when not about them. Istredd nods at that piece of information, he was told that, although it's good to have confirmation. He is focused on something else. ]

Well well well, the compliments never cease! That means a lot coming from you, given all the times you nearly scared me half to death sneaking up on me back at the monastery and not just from appearing in the trees. Don't think I've forgotten about any of those times either even if they were a few years ago now.

[ Teasing, because of course he is, though he does mean it as a compliment to her as well. Those skills were ones that he admired as well, and Claude absently spins his glass around on his tray just to give himself to do as he considers the rest of what Petra's said for a slight turn back to serious following that. ]

If you're sure you don't want to stay here, then when would you like to leave?

[ All said casually with a smile to match, particularly as a guard walks by on their way to get a meal for themselves and he watches until they're a safe distance away before shifting his gaze back to Petra. ]

You won't be alone or on your own in Cadens, you know, and not just because I'll be annoying you every chance I can get if you're there. I don't know that all the Summoned here are necessarily trustworthy - plus I haven't met everyone yet, besides that - but what I have seen is that people do take care of each other. They won't leave you to handle being there by yourself, and neither will I.

[ It's not unsurprising to hear Dimitri feels incomplete without his crest. Even Claude had felt that way when realizing that was what they meant by powers and abilities being diminished, and his crest wasn't nearly capable of the same thing as he'd seen others do - Dimitri's included, what with all those shattered weapons that could be found at the training grounds once upon a time. That's almost a fond memory, aside from said weapon shatterer now being here and calling him an elder with a completely straight face. Claude has barely enough time to contemplate that before Dimitri changes the subject. Sort of. ]

What, first you call me old and now you want all my secrets? Yeesh, kid. Your buttering up skills could use some work.

[ For all his entirely put upon wounded act, it's exactly that: an act and another show of dramatics that Dimitri might remember from more recent academy days. Now Claude's doing it more to be entertaining than as distraction as that wide grin on his face suggests - as does ditching that old title based nickname in favor of a new one if the prince is no longer going to introduce himself as one. Also, that age difference works both ways. ]

Luckily for you I'm in a sharing mood anyway. And the truth is... nothing terribly interesting aside from trying to get my bearings. Mostly I've spent a lot of time in the libraries reading whatever I can find when not helping out around here, or making friends with some of the merchants nearby to pick up some odd jobs. Looking for a project already now that you're here?

[ dimitri raises an eyebrow at his social skills being called 'buttering up', also at the term 'kid', anyway he does his best impression of a 70yo man. ]

Are you not older than myself? It's the truth.

Also, even if you weren't in a generous mood, what purpose would you have to be dishonest to me? I mostly wanted to know because ... we were an entire wing of students who never slept on time. I imagine that even here, you'd need something to keep yourself occupied, and someone who's already in your advanced years would hardly be content with just reading.

[ (this is the kind of question, a very dimitri question, that he can ask in the age that he is in.)

claude staying in libraries, however, is something that he takes for granted here. making friends with merchants, and helping out around town ... well, it's no different from any of their usual missions from the church. only, without the strong arm of the church leading them towards the people.

anyway, some mild teasing: ]

No fantastic schemes at all? I must say, you've changed.

I suppose I'll have to find something to keep myself occupied as well, whatever project that may be.

But if you find it in your rather busy schedule a kindness to extend to myself, if only so I have a friend to have tea with regularly here, I would much appreciate it, Claude.

Club Anti-Ben just seems to be growing daily!

He looks down at the glass that she set down in front of him and just sort of runs the back of his finger up and down the outside of it instead of actually drinking it. It's nothing against the drink or the girl or the establishment... Well, at least not the drink or the Inn. The girl, though? He might just leave here with something against her.

Ben leans against the bar, watching as she seems to busy herself with everything else she can find to avoid dealing with patrons (ie. him, of course). He laughs and shakes his head. "Whoever hired you might wanna have a chat with you about your poor customer service skills."

[ Look. Sometimes you have to eat 112 ounces of chocolate pudding because it's there and when is that opportunity going to present itself again? Sure, stomach death might occur, but there are usually no regrets when it's happening.

Instant gratification or something. ]

I dunno, magic I guess? There seems to be a lot of that around. [ Carl looks to the space waffle in question, absolutely baffled. ]

[ Clearly they both have hard-working stomachs.

Cal considers that answer, but all he can do is wonder if Merrin can conjure up space waffles and if so why hasn't she done it yet? ]

Huh.

[ That might be too insulting to ask. Maybe? He'll think about it.

Cal, brought out of his thoughts, glances down at the triangular waffle, then back to Carl with a quirk of his brow. ]

Y'know.. a waffle.

[ Carl picks up the space waffle in question and bites into it out of curiosity. Yep, definitely tastes like a waffle. Huh.. ]

[ He literally never questioned why it's a space waffle. It simply is. ]

I think you get them with muja sauce. [ He's going to stare at his space waffle for a moment, a bit of a glint in his eye as if he's just had some realization. ] Ooh, that's what the holes are for.

[ Listen. His mental bank of information is limited to things he learned as a kid, things he learned living in isolation on a scrapyard for five years, and things he learned trying not to die for the past...what? Month? He's trying. ]

I think I've got what I'm gonna be able to eat. I'll be over there if you want to join me? [ Unless he's got no real interest in watching someone practically inhale everything set in front of him. Hell, maybe they can muddle through what some of this stuff is together.

[ Yeah, that tiny outburst more or less sums up exactly how Claude's feeling right at this moment even if he's valiantly trying to not show more than he has. Watching Sylvain struggle with it has him contemplating going to get yet another round of drinks just as a preventative measure, but what he's asked gives him pause. ]

Even if there's any chance that things somehow are the same, would it even be fair if I told you? That feels a lot like gambling with fate in a way that I don't think either of us should be fond of. I spoke to Dimitri briefly that day, though. You don't have to explain that part.

[ Claude offers a smile with that, one that's meant to be understanding and not pity. Outside of remembering that so-called trial and supposed execution, there's context to the Dimitri that greeted them on the battlefield he may never know - something he's happier to leave a mystery for once. As for Teach, he spends a second rubbing his brow in thought. ]

Teach disappeared that same day the Empire attacked. I was near the chasm he fell into, and-- [ Claude stops and presses his lips together in a thin line before taking a drink. ] Anyway. He's always said he was asleep for all those years and his story's never once changed. It's never made sense to me, but what's one more entry on the long list of strange things Teach does?

[ That's an attempt at a joke but it falls rather flat since even if Claude's just said he won't be revealing the future, it's too difficult to not comb back through the past with the temptation to double check all of it. Maybe it's better to focus on Teach: someone consistent, somewhat, even if nothing else is. ]

I went back to Garreg Mach when the millennium festival should've happened if war hadn't and broke into the Goddess Tower just for fun. And because I was curious what the view from the top looked like, and then there Teach was strolling up like he'd never left.

[ klaus hargreeves takes to solvunn not unlike a fish to water; its a familiar rhythm to fall back into — the local's fascinations reminiscent of that of his (not)cult, held together by bullshit and beyonce lyrics. all he had to do was smile, promise a few miracles they had hinted on along the way, and even accept a few humble little gifts.

normalcy and peace are entirely overrated, you see, and this was neither normal nor peaceful, like the thereafter had otherwise shown. so the world ends, and he finds himself in a new one and it feels starkly familiar, rinse and repeat. a big part of klaus considers that he is back in the void, that he's finally dead, and that this is someone's idea of an afterlife. someone's very specific, very elaborate idea of an afterlife.

except for the fact that his powers feel awkward, groggy but present in ways that still very much feel real. like something on the cusp of being able to be called back up, but too sleepy and that's a wild difference for klaus to notice. hardly like what his highs hid, a handful of years ago.

and now, instead, he navigates through the marketplace, sober and mostly convinced this is real. because he feels the wind in a way that isn't idyllic, and he's a little hungry, and he can't just conjure up some documentary about galaxies.

its with this in mind, and not at all watching out for who or what is around him that klaus is caught off guard by the hand grabbing onto his arm and pulling him sharply out of his thoughts. the question seems to catch him off-guard, because its so perfectly in line with his powers, and his current turmoil and he has a moment of staring down at the kid, with wild hair and wild eyes and a sort of desperate little look that has klaus's throat tightening. he's seen that look many times in mirrors and on the faces of ghosts.

he breaks into a little smile — a little sad, a little curious and maybe a little awkward. because that question alone implies a hell of a lot, especially when you're asking someone who's been living with — and running from — the dead his entire life.
] Well — that's a good question — [ he looks like he actually considers the question, a hand gently raised to rest on eddie's shoulder. featherlight, and easily dropped away, but klaus had always anchored in tactility. ] — it could be hard to tell. Given all the context of being dunked into some baptismal pool by Gandalf's cousin, but — this wouldn't happen to be your ideal afterlife, would it?

[ steve does notice how it is that eddie's gripping at him, how tight that grip is on his arm, and while he could say something about it, he decides that it's not worth it. decides that probably, if their situations were flipped, he'd do anything for something to hold onto, and steve thinks he can do at least this, after...whatever it is that's happened. ]

It is, though, right? Like- listen, no, dude, wait, listen-

[ but eddie keeps going, and steve can't blame him. he's not the one who has apparently come back from the dead, he's not the one who is trying to find footing when the last thing he remembers the upside down, the bats, pain. it turns steve's stomach just to think about it, and eddie's obviously freaking out.

so, instead of pushing it, steve decides to give up on that bit. decides it's not worth arguing that technically things are okay, because aren't they? not good, but have been worse. have been much worse, in eddie's case. especially when he starts to answer, not bleeding, not hurt, not-.

part of steve is starting to wonder if this is weird - how long they're standing here, how his hands haven't left eddie's shoulders, how they're all but yelling about how eddie munson isn't dead and...let's just say, he's glad they're out of that town. settlement. thing. ]
