TEST DRIVE MEME #13

Test Drive Meme
Welcome to the Test Drive Meme for Abraxas! This meme is run a little bit differently than most in that you'll be asked to choose one of the three different arrival scenarios below for your character to take. If you have any questions about this mechanic or anything else related to the TDM, please take a look at the questions below or ask one of your own under the Questions header below. For general game questions please still use the FAQ.

Below are some links to information you may find useful. Our Setting pages have information about the world itself as well as current events for each nation, while our Game History page outlines the game's story so far.

Setting | Game History | NPCs | Arcana

You can also find answers to questions asked on previous TDMs in their respective questions threads.

The TDM is forward-dated to when the summonings occur in-game (when applications are accepted), at the start of August.

Summoning
You awaken suspended in the abyss, silent darkness stretching out in all directions. If you try to yell, you'll find that the sound doesn't carry. If you try to move, you'll find it's impossible to tell whether or not you're actually getting anywhere. If you reach for an item you were carrying last time you remember being awake, your hand will only touch bare skin.

You're naked and floating helplessly through the void, and what little air you have in your lungs is running out.

There's a pinprick of light that almost looks like a faraway star but as it grows it becomes clear that it's actually quite close. It's hard to make out any individual objects, as if you're looking from beneath rippling water.

A hand plunges through and you realize water is just what it is. Whether you take hold of the hand or not it will grab you and yank you up through the surface, lifting you out until you're sprawled on solid ground - still unclothed.
Arrival
You'll find yourself summoned to one of the following three major nations: the extravagant and magical Kingdom of Thorne, the bustling and advanced Free Cities, or the tightknit and faith-driven rural community of the Solvunn Commune.

If you had any powers, they feel unusually weak. Attempts to use magic or enhanced strength or powers of any sort fizzle out without any effect, but they don't feel completely gone, either. After a week or so, your abilities will return.

When you gather your bearings at last, you look up into a series of unfamiliar faces...and equally unfamiliar surroundings.
Welcome to Thorne
Set into an indent on a marble slab behind the fountain is a card bearing the image of one of the Arcana. An apprentice mage - the one whose hand lifted you out of the fountain - brushes the water off on their robes and runs back to join a group of three others, who all stare intently at another mage with highly decorated robes and a large, heavy book. The man peers up at you for a moment and starts flipping through the book.

"One moment," he says, not bothering to look up from the tome. He looks tired. "I am Ambrose Rhett, the High Mage of the Kingdom of Thorne. We’ll explain everything in a moment, but for now, please calm down. You’re completely fine."

Regardless of your response, he keeps flipping through the pages, until he stops on one specific passage, stares at it for a moment, and then nods, satisfied. "Excellent." He motions for one of the young apprentice mages over. "Settle our guest in, please. I don't have all day."

The apprentice hurries forward with a fine silk tunic, pants, and some basic sandals. With a wave of their hand, the clothes reshape to fit you perfectly. Once you're dressed, the apprentice leads you into the hallways of Castle Thorne, prattling on about the kingdom, names of royals and nobles, and, of course, the reason why you're here: the world itself is in great peril, and tales of your exploits have reached far and wide across universes. If asked about these exploits, the apprentice will simply smile and shrug. The High Mage was happy to see you and that's good enough.
◎ Surroundings
Castle Thorne is where not only royals and members of the court reside, but includes the surrounding city itself. Now in summer, the weather warm and mild. To anyone used to hotter climates, it might even feel somewhat cool. In the distance, you can see snow-covered mountain peaks that are beginning to melt, and the gardens are in bloom. The castle is enchanted to be at a comfortable temperature.

As you walk or look around, you take in some of what's going on around you:
  • The North Wing, devoted to housing the Summoned, is tightly guarded against outsiders. As one of the Summoned, you're free to come and go. The guards aren't keeping anyone prisoner. They're there to protect you, and they take their jobs seriously.

  • Apprentices, kitchen staff, guards - everyone seems to be bustling and busy. Though some tension is in the air when locals debate an execution involving the gods in Solvunn or the recent emergence of the Fey, there's also a buzz of excitement from the Crown Sprint - where a noble steed named Summer Eclipse and her rider Maertisa Cassidy were declared this year's winner.

  • Life in the Castle has chiefly resumed, but the permanent increase in guards indicates a crisis in the past. There are also rumors of unusual rifts and creatures appearing out of nowhere.
◎ Exploring
Despite the troubles that plague the land, Castle Thorne and its surrounding city have much for you to indulge in.
Equestrian Exhibition
Hot on the heels of the extravagant Crown Sprint, Castle Thorne continues the celebration by displaying its finest horses. These include the Haylean Warmblood - bred for Hayle's mountainous cold regions - and the oldest breed in Thorne, the Circinean, named after Thorne's original settlement by Lake Circinus. You can get riding lessons from participants in the Crown Sprint, visit or volunteer to take care of the horses, or help the children who've arrived to take part in smaller pony races. While the children just want to have fun, many hail from noble and aristocratic families, so you find yourself witnessing a certain temperament from their parents...who are significantly more competitive and cutthroat than their kids.

Magic Lessons
Regular magic lessons are held by apprentice mages as part of their training, usually involving learning to cast a small spell. Join if you wish! The spell they will be teaching is conjuring a modest defensive light shield that can protect against a single magical blow. The spell relies on Academic Magic which involves a few words said correctly. You'll likely need a few lessons to grasp it unless you're well-versed in magic already. The class of fresh-faced students means there's a constant bright explosion of light coming from the practice room as the spells fail. It isn't dangerous, but it can be annoying.

Occupying Octopi
Due to the unusual rifts last month, a few octopi have made their way into Castle Thorne. These cephalopods have been spotted lurking in the baths, hiding in pools and lakes, and even taking a dip in the kitchen's water basin. Mages are desperate to catch the loose octopi so that they can return the animals to the ocean. The mages will give you a simple enchanted tracking orb to help locate them, but octopi have a habit of being elusive and squeezing into tight spaces - so retrieving one might take some innovation! Maybe it'll go smoother with a partner?

Nocwich
Nocwich, which is shrouded in an eternal darkness and is home to the werewolves and the vampires, opens on the first weekend of every month for a total of 3 days. Shortly after arriving, you'll be given a pendant that allows you to travel to and from the portal. In Castle Thorne, the portal is a short walk around the back of the castle. You can enter Nocwich freely and explore what's available in Oleuni Square and Luna. You won't be able to enter Ikorr nor will you be able to exit into another faction's portals. Once there, you're welcome to meet those from other factions, take in the sights, and - if you've come by some money or a generous soul - even make a few small purchases. Inns are available for a fee if you want to stay overnight. Otherwise, you'll need to return home through the portals each day.
◎ Settling In
When you're ready to rest, you're shown to the North Wing, which has been set up as living quarters for you and your fellow newcomers. There are four people to a room, but each generously-sized bed has opaque curtains that can be drawn around it. You can meet your roommates here and discuss your shared situation (those who were previously brought in may have a great deal of information to tell you).

Although you can leave the castle, you can't leave its surrounding city with the exception of entering Nott via portal in order to assist with rebuilding or visiting Nocwich. Borders are especially well-guarded right now due to the recent attacks. Besides, Castle Thorne gives you everything you need: fine clothes, great food and wine, massive libraries, and all the magic and knowledge you could want. Isn't that plenty? You won't be given money as you're provided for, so if you want to do some personal spending later, you'll have to find a job in the city on your own.
Welcome to the Free Cities
Dry warmth hits you at once as you're set on a hard floor of dull ruddy stone. Men and women in unfamiliar uniforms of brown and red leather stand in a semi-circle around a small pool of water - the very pool you were just pulled from. The water is still now, rimmed in pale gold tiles with odd symbols etched into them. Across it is a raised pedestal with a card bearing an Arcana symbol.

A guard covers you with a simple robe and returns to their place in the semi-circle. Before you stands another woman, dressed in a more elaborate and decorated uniform than the others. A sword rests at her hip. She carries an air of authority as she approaches you with a nod and a warm smile. "Sorry about the circumstances. Take a minute, catch your breath. I'm Prime Minister Marlo Reiner and you're in The Free Cities. That nice lady over there will explain everything to you and get you settled."

A robed mage off to the side approaches to help you up. She brings you out of the cave through a corridor that angles upwards until you emerge in what looks like some kind of storage facility. You'll learn you're in the Cadens Desert Outpost 003, a military base on the outskirts of the major city of Cadens. You're told the world is in delicate and dangerous times, and you're needed to help. You're important and they're very grateful you're here.
◎ Surroundings
While you're currently at the outpost just outside of the city proper, Cadens on the whole is a large bustling city. Temperatures are sweltering, and the climate is hot and dry. Even the summer nights are relatively warm. Look to the west and you'll see a long stretch of desert wasteland. This is the infamous Badlands. The soldiers don't recommend going out there unprepared - you're likely to face a slow death to the elements or be eaten. Reaching Cadens is possible by wagon, a trip of about 2 hours each way. You're asked to return by sundown for your own safety... but no one will chase after you if you don't.

You'll be given a military style uniform with your Arcana stitched on it where a formal rank would normally be. As you walk or look around, you take in some of what's going on around you:
  • Libertas shows signs of having suffered a devastating attack, but the majority of it has been rebuilt including a new garden park memorial that commemorates the lives lost. Chatter has shifted from the fire attacks to the gruesome execution involving the gods in Solvunn, as well as the Summoned's invitation to visit the Feywilds last month. Scholars and laymen alike can be heard debating the nature of gods, men, and the Fey.

  • From Cadens to Aquila to Libertas, the streets are guarded. Soldiers patrol all areas, especially those typically occupied by the Summoned. This includes a particular inn and tavern in the heart of Cadens - The Sarstina - where the Summoned like you are often found. It's evident they're here for your protection rather than to prevent you from moving freely. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is cheery. Many have just returned from a fulfilling trip into the desert known as The Firebrand, where hobbyists celebrate innovation, independence, and unique inventions.

  • Life in the Free Cities has chiefly resumed, but the permanent increase in guards indicates a crisis in the past. There are also rumors of unusual rifts and creatures appearing out of nowhere.
◎ Exploring
Despite the troubles that plague the land, the barracks and Cadens have much for you to indulge in.
Training Grounds
Non-lethal training weapons and obstacle courses are set up for anyone to use. The soldiers will be watching, and if you catch their attention they might approach you and encourage you to enlist. You're free to invite other new arrivals to spar, but be sure to keep things friendly and avoid trouble. Discipline is key in the barracks. If you're especially competitive, the soldiers will sometimes hold impromptu obstacle races with informal wagers made. They'll be happy to race against even the most unlikely of opponents, and you'll be judged more on your spirit rather than your skill. If you really impress them, they'll even buy you a drink.

Marble Engravings
A researcher named Esi Hollandse has unveiled her newest creation: a handheld "laser" tool powered by New Magic meant to help sculptors sculpt stone. Come visit the beautifully displayed marble sculptures created using this new technique, which allows for more refined carving techniques. Want to try it for yourself? Why not! With some guidance, you can create your own etchings on a small stone block and take home your newest piece of art.

Swan Song
Due to the unusual rifts last month, several swans have invaded Cadens and are now becoming a menace, stealing bread, grains, and desserts from market stalls and shops. You might come across a shopkeeper chasing a swan after it stole their cheese or a harried attendant at the museum shooing a bird away from their precious artifacts. Perhaps you could lend a hand? Or, you could find yourself an unsuspecting victim of a swan. Any captured swans can be brought to Portam Hall and delivered to one of the government departments there, though you might have to stand in line while grasping an unhappy bird. Be careful not to let it escape!

Nocwich
Nocwich, which is shrouded in an eternal darkness and is home to the werewolves and the vampires, opens on the first weekend of every month for a total of 3 days. Shortly after arriving, you'll be given a pendant that allows you to travel to and from the portal. In Cadens, the portal is a short walk away from the center of the city.
◎ Settling In
When you're ready to turn in, the barracks are waiting for you. They have a communal bathing room at the end of the hall, with curtains that can be pulled around the individual raised round tubs for privacy. Each barracks room is rather sparse. Six simple beds set against the wall, three on each side of the room, each with a trunk at the foot of it. You can greet your roommates here, most of whom will be new arrivals, as well.

If you plan on making use of your assigned quarters, you'll have your basic needs met: uniforms, a roof, bland food from the mess hall, and access to the training grounds. You won't be paid unless you formally enlist with the army. The longer you take advantage of the barracks, the greater the pressure to enlist. Some soldiers will start to see you as a freeloader if you refuse to join them yet continue to use their resources. If you're set on not enlisting, you can always strike out on your own in Cadens - but you won't be provided for and handouts are rare. You'll have to work to earn every copper and loaf of bread. Whether that's honest work is up to you.
Welcome to Solvunn
You're in a grassy clearing in the midst of a circle of large stone slabs stacked to look like doorways. In the middle is the same glimmering pool you were just pulled from. An elderly mage stands before an ornate altar. He holds an old leather-bound book in one hand and in the other is a card bearing an arcana symbol. "I detect no ill will from the gods," he says. "It seems we've been blessed with success."

Those that had gathered all breathe a sigh of relief and now seem pleased. One offers you some clothes of leather and knitted wool that seem to fit you perfectly. A rough-looking man steps forward once you're dressed and motions with his head outside of the stone circle. His speech is informal, his consonants harsh.

"Hold your horses, I can see all those questions coming about! Rowan March, at your service. I'm one of the council members of Solvunn. There's a lot to discuss, but it's best talked about over a hot meal." He leads you to a horse-drawn carriage and helps you up into the back. He talks the entire ride to the center of the Primary Settlement. You're told that the world hangs upon the brink of disaster and that there are those in this world that are happy to see it fall to ruin with their meddling.

You're important. The gods have graced them with your presence. They're delighted you're here.
◎ Surroundings
The Primary Settlement is full of greenery, blessed with the fresh ocean breeze. Winds are gentle and the temperatures are comfortably warm with light humidity. The scent of wildflowers fills the air. The shops, farms, and homes around you are all modest and unassuming. You get the sense that the people here prefer to blend in with their neighbors than stand out.

As you walk or look around, you'll be greeted warmly, even eagerly...though there's an edge of awestruck nervousness to some. Though the settlement is often quiet and calm, there's still plenty to take in:
  • Shops and stalls in Solvunn are booming with the fruits of spring and summer. Vendors are eager to barter goods and are in the habit of including extra gifts with any purchase or trades made. If you are looking for a good deal, now is the time!

  • Those in Solvunn are no longer discussing the execution of former Council member Josselyn Creed, but the ashes of her bones remain on display by an altar in the Primary Settlement - a reminder and a warning not to stray from the flock. As well, there's curious chatter surrounding the Summoned's invitation to visit the Feywilds last month.

  • Life in the Solvunn Commune has chiefly resumed, but the focus on appeasing the gods and increased shrine offerings indicate many have not forgotten the troubles of the past. There are also rumors of unusual rifts and creatures appearing out of nowhere.
◎ Exploring
Despite the troubles that plague the commune, the commune and its settlements have much for you to indulge in.
Goat Racing
That's right. One of Solvunn's fine traditions is its regular goat races. Meant to be a bit of informal fun, there's a pen of goats where you can choose a goat, get a number, and simply join one of the starting lines. These goats are not trained so the race is less of a race and more pure chaos as the goats do what they please. Whoever eventually wrangles their goat over the finish line wins. The only rule is that you can't pick up or physically pull your goat, but you're free to cajole, lure, or even use a bit of magic to get yours to the finish line first. Winners receive small prizes of cheese, ale, wood charms, woven baskets, and other similar tokens.

Shrine Supervision
During the recent Summer Equinox celebrations, the youth have a habit of holding their own tradition called the Guardian Séance. These unsanctioned rites are quickly stopped by Commune Elders, but there's been some damage and messes that need to be put right. Elders have asked you to supervise the adolescents who've been assigned to clean up the shrines and restore the damage they've caused. Beware of snakes in the grass! You're also welcome to help the teens with their task. Once completed, Elders will invite you to make an offering in the formal traditions of High Magic.

Bird Baths
Due to the unusual rifts last month, and with the convincing of a few of the Summoned, Solvunn has agreed to raise some of the unique pack birds on one of their farmlands. Unfortunately, the week's downpour has caused them to become very muddy. Desperate farmhands have asked for your help giving the birds a good wash to clean their dirty feathers. You can also help feed them grain and prevent any jealous goats from headbutting or fighting these docile birds.

Nocwich
Nocwich, which is shrouded in an eternal darkness and is home to the werewolves and the vampires, opens on the first weekend of every month for a total of 3 days. Shortly after arriving, you'll be given a pendant that allows you to travel to and from the portal. In Solvunn, the portal is a short walk away.
◎ Settling In
When you're ready for your bed, you're brought to the center of town and escorted to an apartment above one of the establishments in town. The living conditions are temporary if you'd like them to be: the local families would also be happy to host you in their home. In return, you'll be expected to contribute to their household, taking upon daily chores and repairs. While money has its uses, many establishments and craftsmen are happy to barter with your time or skill for their goods. You'll find your willingness to trade and your friendliness with the natives more valuable than gold.

You can even leave for the other two settlements if you like, but you're encouraged to remain in the Primary Settlement. Just be sure you have an invitation to the Secondary Settlement. There are tales of travelers visiting the secondary settlement without invitation disappearing without a trace. The gods are as hungry as they are protective.
Questions and Answers

If after reading these you're still unsure about anything, or your question wasn't covered, please feel free to hit up our Questions thread below!

How many slots are open?
Please check the Taken page for how many player, franchise, and canon slots are available. Activity check will be processed before applications open, so the count may change between now and then. Existing players can apply for a second character without restriction.
How do I choose a scenario for my character?
Pick whichever situation appeals to you most. Which faction your character is drawn into has nothing to do with their personal morality, beliefs, or how highly they regard themselves and their own accomplishments. Anyone can be put into any one of the situations.
What happens if my character refuses to comply with the NPCs?
They will be forgiven for their moment of panic or anger if they have one, and the faction leaders will try to calm them and persuade them further. If they put up too much of a fight and/or start actively attacking anyone, they will be warned once that everyone is willing to put them back in the well where they came from (see below), and if they continue to fight they will make good on that promise.
My character intends on causing a lot of trouble (destroying parts of the cities, murdering the NPCs, etc.), what would happen to them?
Characters who make too much trouble for the mages and other NPCs would be thrown back in the well (which will mean drowning in the void, not returning home). Brawling with other PCs and causing minor damage is fine and will be greeted with a cranky attitude and intervention from various NPC guards, and there will be plenty of opportunity for destruction and murder later, but for now the Abraxans have no desire to keep huge liabilities around.
Is the power loss for characters permanent?
No, but it does take a week or so for their powers to be back in full, and certain powers (determined on a case-by-case basis) may require nerfs. If your character has world-breaking powers, please discuss with the mods what modifications may be necessary.
Can my character leave the bounds of the nation?
In Thorne, characters can leave the castle but not the city. In the Free Cities, they can take a trip from the outpost to the nearest main city, Cadens. In Solvunn, they can explore the entirety of the Primary Settlement.
Can my character eventually change nations or kingdoms?
Yes, but tensions between the major nations are at an all-time high. Doing so is possible, but will require some plotting and discussion with the mods once you're in-game!
How much will my choice of scenario affect my character's plot later on?
This choice will determine where your character initially lives as well as the bias of the information they receive from NPCs (although other PCs can and most likely will give it to them a bit more straight). It will also affect your character's day-to-day life and development. Characters who seek technological advancements or combat will find more of it in the Free Cities while those keen on court politics and learning magic will have the most access to it in Thorne. Anyone who wishes to uncover the secrets of the Old Gods and forest mysteries will best do so in Solvunn.

This is not to say characters can't do these things from another faction - with effort and the help of friends, anything is possible! Don't get too anxious about your choice. This is just one of many, and every character in each scenario can work their way towards many individual goals and outcomes. Additionally, once in-game the Horizon will provide characters with a way to easily find cross-faction CR.
Are TDM threads mandatory for my application?
No, you may use other samples, but we encourage you to post to the TDM and get a feel for this game and its mechanics before you join. If you do not have a TDM thread you will still need to choose one of the three scenarios on your application.
What if I haven't settled on a sign yet?
Your Arcana sign won't have an immediate impact on your character beyond them seeing it on themselves or being told what it is by the locals. You're welcome to disregard those aspects in your prompts or try out different signs.
Can my character go to the Horizon?
First time visitors to the Horizon must be taken there by other characters, through either shared meditation or a physical journey to the Singularity, and all first-timers experience memory loss. For the purposes of the TDM, we suggest against using the Horizon.

If you're interested in threading with characters outside your borders on the TDM, you can utilize the Nocwich prompt which will allow all characters to meet in person regardless of arrival scenario.
What about making use of the network?
Much like Horizon they would need to be introduced to it by another PC, as no NPCs would be aware of the network or be able to access it. Because of this, we would advise against using this mechanic for TDM top-levels.
Can I try out more than one arrival scenario on the same TDM?
Yes, although only threads taking place in the arrival scenario you formally choose upon applying can count as canon. However, you're welcome to try out as many as you like on the TDM.

Linhardt von Hevring | Fire Emblem: Three Houses | Thorne | The High Priestess

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-22 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)

Arrival

[Linhardt sees no reason not to take the hand offered to him in the void. In truth, staying in the void would have been quite pleasant if it weren't for the suffocating sensation in his lungs, but that did put a damper on things. Where he is pulled to is unpleasantly bright and crowded in comparison to the peacefulness of the void.

Normally, he would be quite cross at being pulled into such a rousing situation, but he...doesn't feel tired? That can't be right. He's always tired.

Ah. Someone is saying something. Some sort of reassurance. Linhardt holds up a finger, indicating that they should wait. He is busy. Do not tell him he is fine. He does not know that yet. It does appear that he is in good condition, physically. A bit chilly due to the draft and his lack of clothing, but nothing more. Except something is wrong.

Standing is surprisingly easy and doesn't require the willpower it ordinarily does. Yet something feels lacking. He closes his eyes: his magical senses are working fine: He can tell who is in the room. But when he holds out his palm and attempts to summon fire, all that he manages is a wisp of smoke. Linhardt frowns and begins to attend to himself, checking his pulse and other vitals and completely ignoring both the 'High Mage' (Good, that means wherever he is, he isn't responsible for anything) and his underling until his checks are complete.

Hmm. He needs more time to unravel this. Being unable to summon his magic makes him feel far more 'naked' than his lack of clothing. At the same time, it is impossible to deny the sheer amount of energy he has at the moment. Is this why Caspar, Ferdinand, and Edelgard can always do things?

Finally, Linhardt accepts the clothes (at least these people, whoever they are, are civilized) and follows the apprentice, though he pays little attention to what he's told and immediately wanders off the accepted path when they pass a library, ignoring his handler in favor of indulging his own curiosity about the situation. He does not care about the Kingdom of Thorne or its peril. He does care about magic and where his has disappeared to, and the apprentice is unhelpful. Therefore there is no reason to stay with him.]

You can go do something else. I am aware of how castles are constructed.

[He can find his own way around. The apprentice is welcome to putter elsewhere.]

Exploring - Equestrian Exhibition

[Linhardt doesn't dislike horses. He doesn't like them either, but if he were truthfully pressed about why he is present, it is because events like these tend to have good food and he's hungrier than he usually is. He has no intention of getting involved in anyone's affairs, but it is difficult to ignore a child being berated to nearly the point of tears for falling off her pony.]

Yes. By all means. Scolding her will clearly reverse the flow of time and make her a more skilled rider. And your disheveled outburst is of no annoyance to anyone around you and is by no means a spectacle.

[Nobles are the same everywhere, it seems, and making a scene is mortifying enough to shut the parent up (and for the girl to smile behind her hand). Unfortunately, now Linhardt has an 8 year old girl stuck to him like a barnacle, leading him to approach the nearest person who looks like they might have some idea about how to proceed.]

Hello. I require assistance. Are you an equestrian?

Settling In - Magic Lessons

[Boring. Why are classes always so boring? And why are students so annoying? The burst of energy he experienced upon his arrival has drained, leaving Linhardt in his usual exhausted and cranky state, but at least his magic has returned. Though he still does not understand why, and he had to recalculate several key constants to make it work properly. Unfortunately, his self-studying had hit a wall as the books in the libraries written for a more advanced audience assume some Abraxas-specific instruction he has not been privy to. Hence his attendance.

All nobles are insufferable. All classes are boring.

Which is why Linhardt is sleeping resoundingly in the back of the room, drooling on the desk until a particularly bright flash of light wakes him up. It's not a good way to wake up.]

For Sothis's sake! Physically make space! It isn't difficult!

[Linhardt follows up his outburst with an eye roll and then rubs his eyes with a yawn, finally looking over at the person who is now staring at him.]

What?

Nocwich - Elixir Shop

[Being at least somewhat prudent when it comes to matters that are not his research, Linhardt has managed to turn the small amount of money he's acquired by helping someone with a particularly nasty hangover into a somewhat less small amount of money - a fluency in statistics as well as a willingness to cheat by moving dice with magic served him well - though he left the moment he received any attention, uncomfortable with people's eyes on him.

In some ways, Nocwich is similar to Abyss, and Linhardt conducts himself similarly: Stay out of the way and observe things that are interesting.

Until he sees the elixir shops, where he abandons all sense of self-restraint and immediately begins peppering the proprietor with enough questions that the poor merchant looks like they aren't sure whether to punch Linhardt or tell him to leave. Their tune changes when Linhardt shoves his entire wallet at them, leaving with 3 elixirs and 2 pieces of the tempting glowing candy.

One of which the healer promptly stuffs into his mouth. Oh, someone else is looking at the stall.]

Do you want this piece? I will give it to you if you allow me to compare and contrast its effects on each of us.

[Is there variance?]

Nocwich - Hot Springs

[The hot springs are delightful. Linhardt unabashedly removes all of his clothing and dunks himself into the warm water, almost immediately falling asleep as the heat seeps into his consistently tired form and lulls him off to sleep.

Still, the habits gained over years of conflict do not cease immediately, and when the water sloshes and someone else joins his pool, Linhardt groans and sits up, though he doesn't open his eyes to see who's joined him.]

Really? Must you? All of the other ones are completely full?

[Why ruin something so relaxing and peaceful with other people?]

AHHHH also nocwich elixir shop

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-07-22 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[ When everything else is wrong in the world, Hilda knows without certainty that shopping will never fail to cheer her up.

It's all too easy to get lost in the stalls and shops of Nocwich. Taking the time to deliberately turn over each interesting item or piece of clothing like it's some precious treasure is soothing for Hilda much in the way working on her accessories has become. Both are every bit distractions as much as they are a hobby, but the difference being that in Abraxas, the things she's trying to distract from are the sources of her hurt and not a war. That's an improvement, right?

Today's trip into Nocwich is no different from the times before, but this time instead of browsing, she's looking for specific materials for a project she's working on. Readying to leave with her overstuffed bag from a nearby stall, she turns and immediately does a double take. Her skin pales, the usual colour of her cheeks draining quickly from her face, the list of names in Claude's study in his domain screaming at her, the green-haired man's name amongst them. First swans, now Lindhardt? Abraxas was pulling out all the stops.

By the time she's closed the distance between them, she's more certain he's actually here in the flesh. There's a careful air about her despite her usual affixed smile settling onto her face like nothing is the matter. ]

That depends. Are you going to eat a piece too? I feel like it's only fair, Lindhardt.
sleepfan: (Surprised)

AAHHHH :D :D :D

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-22 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hilda isn't the only person in the encounter who's surprised. Linhardt hadn't actually been looking at the person he was addressing. But he knows that voice. Linhardt visibly startles, jumping slightly, and then his entire body tenses before he takes a deep breath and forces himself to relax.

The healer finally turns to look at Hilda, still visibly surprised. Which is a rare look on Linhardt, his blue eyes wide. He can't resist the urge to stare. Yes. That is Hilda Goneril. That makes sense, but it has implications Linhardt Does Not Like and brings to mind things he has Not Been Thinking About. He does not have Hilda's ability to compose himself: On the rare occasion Linhardt is shocked, he shows it.]

...I... yes. That was the plan.

I would not ask you. I know you would rather relax.

[Opposing nations or not, Linhardt will not betray the bond of the Lazy. Speaking of, he sighs.]

What would it take for you to not tell the others I am here?

[Obviously if they're both there on account of their 'exploits' then the more historically important figures in their class would be there as well, yes? If there were any exploits to be heralded, his aren't high on the list.]

[ While they may not have been the best of friends during the Academy Hilda had always had a soft spot for Lindhardt (Lazy saw Lazy and respected the avoidance of tasks and activities that fell outside of their respective interests).

For a moment she worries that that may have changed for her. But seeing him face to face now, with that surprised expression on his face and his insistence that he didn't want to be the cause of her exerting more effort than necessary immediately drops whatever wariness she might have held in her shoulders. The smile on her face loosens a little in turn. It's a relief to know that time, war, and opposing ideals had not changed that.

What he says next though leaves her feeling puzzled. She tilts her head to the side as if that will somehow reveal what he's trying to get at. Had he run into Sylvain and Claude? As much as she'd love to try some mysterious candy, there are more important things to discuss. ]

The others? You mean Claude and Sylvain?

[ A quick appraisal of his clothing tells her that he had landed in Thorne; the dress was distinctly less dusty and sandy than what those from the Free Cities normally wore. Did he mean - ]

Are there others with you in Thorne?

[Linhardt is very thankful that Hilda has not taken the opportunity to place an axe in his back. He has nothing against anyone from any other nation: His participation in Edelgard's war is entirely about preserving the lives of his friends. It is true that he disagrees with the Church on many important matters, but that has nothing to do with anyone from Leicester or even most members of the Church. He doesn't think most of the Knights are aware of or care about the Church's censorship and its implications.

The healer is more than willing to allow Fodlan's problems to remain in Fodlan.

Hilda's puzzlement is a puzzle in and of itself. Puzzle recursion. Linhardt gives her a baffled look in return.]

Claude I would expect. Is Edelgard not here? I was told that we were selected due to knowledge of our activities. Edelgard, regardless of what you think of her, is more historically and archivally significant than I am. She's...not here?

[As much as he tries, it is difficult to keep himself from sounding somewhat relieved.]

Not anyone from Fodlan. I check at least once a day in case Caspar or Bernadetta is brought here.

[Linhardt takes a moment to assimilate this information. Him, Hilda, Claude, and Sylvain? That's good. He exhales, letting some of the stress fall away from his shoulders. None of them are the sort to act rashly. Claude will doubtlessly be scheming, but of all the lords, Claude is the one that Linhardt trusts to act the most logically.]

That is everyone who is here?

[ Hilda can't help but laugh lightly at that. ]

If you think they made a mistake bringing you here, then why did they bring me here?

[ The mention of Edelgard isn't enough to a strong reaction out of Hilda but her jaw does shift. She had had mildly uncomfortable conversations with Petra while she had been here about the Emperor. And while the result of those things hadn't ended with Hilda changing her mind about a war she's still on the precipice of, she at least understood now that Edelgard's intentions had been the same as Claude's. She had just chosen a more...aggressive way of going about it. Understanding didn't mean she has to like her though.

If she and Lindhardt ever did sit down to speak about it at length though, she'd probably be relieved to find that he simply wanted to care for his friends much in the same way she wanted to care for hers.

Speaking about the war - the one she was still a part of, and the one that he may or may not have already experienced - isn't a subject she wants to explore right now though. It's not exactly, "welcome to a new world that you probably were pulled butt naked into," material. ...With that in mind though is talking about weird timelines any better?

Actually, knowing the sleepy scholar, the answer is yes. Yes it is better. ]

No she isn't. But she was at one point with the professor.

[ Her choice of words are prescribed. Purposely chosen so that she can gauge whatever reactions he might have on his own. The thought of Caspar and Bernie also brings a pang of homesickness and it flickers through her gaze. It lingers as she rattles off the names of the others who has come and gone. ]

Petra, Marianne and Felix were here too but it's just us now.
sleepfan: (Default)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-22 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea.

[Trust Linhardt to give such an honest answer: He doesn't know why Hilda would be there. It's possible that they had found Hilda in a book somewhere devoted to border skirmishes? It's puzzling.]

I do not think I am here by mistake.

[There is a quiet confidence behind Linhardt's words. He is not particularly given to ego - bragging only results in attention and unwanted social interaction - but he is aware of his talent. And the way the heads of the guards had whipped around hearing him complain that his Warp magic would not function properly and that he was having trouble finding enough space to lay out the equations he was tracing back to figure out why.

It had simply been surprising that Edelgard was not also present as she was very useful and more well-known.

Thoughts on Edelgard's historical significance flee Linhardt's mind entirely. She used to be here. But now wasn't? So it had been a future Edelgard and Professor? So they can control the time of Summonings as well as place?

The Professor. Linhardt's eyes also flash with homesickness. She would know what to do. There are two other names that Hilda mentions that are of interest to him.]

What happened to them? Are they alright? I cannot believe that anyone would drag Marianne into this mess.

[His voice is greatly disapproving.]

I am from the earliest point then? I wonder why that would be.

[Otherwise he would have heard of their disappearances.]

Magic Lessons

[personal profile] wasalmostdaphne 2023-07-23 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Bay was trying to focus on the person talking, even if they blindly ignored her repeated requests to face the class while they spoke. She put parenthetical notes as to what they problem said while she couldn't see them. She'd noticed the guy next to her dozing off but ignored it. Out of sight out of mind.]

[Until every eye in the room was on him. For whatever happened.]

I think you shouted something? Whatever you did it was big enough everyone else turned to look at you.

[The lecturer was back to not facing the class as he spoke, and honestly Bay was getting frustrated at the whole class thing. So even if everyone else had turned back to the lesson. Her eyes were firmly on the long haired former napper.]
sleepfan: (Default)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-23 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yes, Linhardt had shouted something, because he is apparently surrounded by idiots. Which wouldn't be any different than usual except that these idiots keep creating flashes of light that are entirely too bright and therefore waking him up from his attempts to sleep through the tedious parts of the class.

Which were 95% of it.

So he had shouted in frustrated. Unfortunately, shouting brings attention and social interaction. Alas. It isn't to be helped. The woman addressing him isn't being rude, so Linhardt gives her a chance, resting his head on his arms and looking at her with curiosity.]

Did you not hear me?

[He frowns slightly in concern; how is she following the lesson then? If she can't hear him how can she hear the instructor? He is closer and was louder.]

I did. I shouted that the students needed to make space for their shields. That is what they are doing wrong: They are using lines instead of vectors and also not accounting for the physical space of the air. You need to move the air or else the force can't coalesce.

It's obvious and I find their stupidity difficult.

[If she couldn't hear him before, can she hear him now? He frowns. She's taking notes. So therefore she is literate. Linhardt scribbles a note and passes it to her.]

Can you hear me currently? Or is this a better form of communication?

[Linhardt does not like repeating himself, so it would be best to establish the most effective method of communication up front.]
wasalmostdaphne: (S3_06 - Yuletide)

[personal profile] wasalmostdaphne 2023-07-23 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[There were a few obvious signs, to anyone paying attention. Bay can't hear. Any louder noises in the classroom she just completely didn't sell for. As well as the smaller noises like students snickering at her 'missing' things. Because humans, everywhere, sucked.]

[When it came to Linhardt, she understood the words he said perfectly but trying to apply it here and not in an artistic space was what was causing her a little confusion. Essentially he was past her understanding of magic completely and there wasn't really a way for her to solve that. Still, it seems easier in a classroom to stick to the classics of passing notes rather than talking out loud. She quickly writes a reply in the margin of the page.]

I read lips. But this is better if you're trying to explain something math related if it applies to magic. Especially if High Mage Darvo keeps turning his back to the class while he lectures.

No he won't stop, yes I have asked him to stop that.

[Her body tenses as she writes the last words because's definitely not very bitter over that detail.]
sleepfan: (Thinking)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-23 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Linhardt probably would have known Bay were deaf...if he had been awake for longer than 40 seconds at a time since the class had started. Attentiveness is not one of his virtues. Still, he's awake now, and takes the revelation in stride. She can write, which makes it much easier to speak to her than the temporarily deaf or those who cannot hear but also cannot read or write.

His eyes flicker down and he reads the words as quickly as she writes them, frowning more deeply as he replies:]

They are only producing light because they are not making physical space for the shield. In order for something to be an effective shield you need to produce either physical matter or counteracting force. Essentially they are creating an array of points rather than anything consistent.

[Linhardt stops and thinks, then reaches down to illustrate by drawing a bunch of dots that are all clumped together in a circle, then does a second drawing of a circle where everything is connected in a smooth line.]

It makes no sense that they will not change - you are Summoned, yes? If you were brought here to learn magic why would they not make it easy for you?

[He's honestly confused.]
wasalmostdaphne: (S3_25 - Yuletide)

[personal profile] wasalmostdaphne 2023-07-23 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[Put in that perspective, if you view magic not as an energy but as an effort of force, yes. You need to give it space to exert. She's only recently started to read magical theory. It makes sense but she isn't sure if it's true.]

[Her being summoned felt slightly weird. She could get that her perspective was unique, but that was all she really could give. The way the world twisted around her was interesting. How her fate was stolen, later changed, but it didn't make her anyone useful if you just wanted another mage.]

Have you tried to get old dusty academics to change how they've always done things? For one person who isn't quite like them, with slightly different needs? They NEVER want to change. And he's of the opinion that I'm not here to learn magic, because Academic Magic is spoken. And he doesn't see any way I could learn the pronunciation of the words.

[Which was was a very solid motivator for her to do it, spite. Spite was good, best way to motivate a teenager with a chip on her shoulder was play to her defiant nature. Not that the High Mage thought she'd succeed, or cared, he was annoyed she existed.]

I supplement the lectures with reading the same old books he learned all of this from anyway. Usually he's repeating them verbatim.
sleepfan: (Stupid Amused)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-23 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Linhardt gives Bay a blank, confused look. No, he has not ever had such an experience. Linhardt is an academic to his core: Down to his bones and spirit. Everybody has spent his life trying to urge him away from such paths except for the scant few other intellectuals he's met. Mostly only Professor Hanneman if he's honest. Everybody else has encouraged him to be practical.]

No. I like most academics. Why should we change just to be more like the rest of you?

[People have also spent Linhardt's entire life trying to change things about him. Leave him be! He is fine.

The idea that magic has to be spoken produces a derisive snort from Linhardt, nose bunching up in judgment. As does the implication that Academic Magic was the only type of magic to matter or exist.]

I have been avoiding him, so I do not know him. I see no reason we cannot attempt to adapt their magic to suit you. It would be an interesting exploration about the nature of language and its relationships to magic in this land. I think the first thing to investigate would be whether or not this form of magic can be done in foreign languages.

Hot Springs!!! because he couldn’t resist >.>

[personal profile] philancer 2023-07-23 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He hadn’t been sure at first. In fact, he’d done a double-take upon entering the hot springs at the sight of a somewhat familiar head of hair. It had lured him over to take a closer look and the sight of Linhardt of dozing there had hit him with such a pang of nostalgia that he’d been speechless for a moment.

Except very little could keep Sylvain speechless for long, and there’s an impish grin on his lips as he strips and slips into the same pool the other man is occupying, not surprised when the disturbance gets him a grumbled protest. Perfect. ]

Of course not. But they seem so awfully lonely in comparison…

[ Is that a pout in his voice? Maybe a little. There’s definitely a lilt of playfulness lingering there as well, however. ]
sleepfan: (Stupid Unamused)

Never resist, Sylvain

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-23 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[That voice. Ugh. He knows that voice. Linhardt thinks back to his conversation with Hilda as he is against his will pulled back into the present. At least the hot springs are pleasant, which takes the edge off of Linhardt's perpetual exhaustion.

He opens one blue eye to confirm that he is in fact sharing his pool with Sylvain Gautier. Who is supposed to be dead. And is very much not dead and very...physically present. Linhardt's eyes scan over what he can see of Sylvain, mentally noting differences.]

So you have already been turned down by all of the women?

[The retort is reflexive, taking little of Linhardt's attention away from the other man. He finally wakes himself up fully, dipping an elegant hand in the water and then rubbing his face and smoothing his hair behind his ears while sitting up straight.

Sylvain doesn't seem hostile, but that doesn't mean much. Linhardt hadn't interacted with him closely in school, but the loud arguments he'd overheard between Sylvain and his school friends along with the gossip passed around did not lead Linhardt to trust that Sylvain is an open person.]

Thank you for not stabbing me. It is appreciated.

[Linhardt yawns and looks over at Sylvain again, though this time there's something else in his eyes when they flicker up and down, taking him in.]

I suppose worse sights could have greeted me.

[He shares Sylvain's lack of shame when it comes to his predilections, including his appreciation for both sexes. If Sylvain wants to make himself a spectacle, Linhardt sees no reason not to enjoy the view. If the other man objects, he is free to leave or dress himself.]

[personal profile] philancer 2023-07-23 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, hardly, but they’re exhausting, so this seemed a much more relaxing option.

[ His answer is delivered cheerfully enough, even if there’s something a little more guarded in his tone, with that as a greeting. He probably should have expected it, but he’s been here with Hilda and Claude - and Petra, before that - that he’d become more relaxed even when greeting familiar faces from home. Easier to forget to don the masks he’d worn constantly back home, when he had so less need for them here.

He settles in across the pool, muscles arms stretching out to either side of him on the rocks as he relaxes and eyes the other man curiously. An impish smirk still lingers on his lips as he cocks his head to the side. ]

Come now. I would have at least bought you dinner first before we proceeded that far. What do you take me for? [ At least his tendency to turn just about anything into innuendo hasn’t abated at all in his time here. ] Although I confess, I’m a little surprised. You weren’t among the new arrivals in the Free Cities, were you?

[ That’s more of a statement than a question. He keeps a close eye on all the new arrivals. Just in case there’s a familiar face among them. ]

I hold you no ill-will. Even if I did not think the war was stupid, I am more than content to leave Fodlan's problems in Fodlan.

[They could dance around it, or Linhardt could address the Edelgard shaped elephant in the room. His own aversion to violence is decently well known, but Sylvain does not have any such compunction. Hence it being honest gratitude. Everybody is being appropriately sensible.]

Clearly all those rumors about your ungentlemanly like nature were overblown. Perhaps I have erred in being so dismissive of Faerghan chivalry when seeking vulnerability.

[Lacking any sense of shame and enjoying wordplay means Linhardt is more than happy to exchange banter. At least Sylvain can keep up. And he is pleasant to look at. Linhardt believes in enjoying life's little pleasures. Naps. Gelato. Exotic food. Fine clothes. Enjoyable sights. Appreciation can be left as it is and enjoyed.

In response to the question, the healer shakes his head.]

I was brought to Thorne. I am surprised that you have not melted by now.

[Gautier territory was frigid and the maps and information Linhardt has taken in about Abraxas suggest that said Free Cities are in a very warm location.]
philancer: (010)

That’s what he’s working on, run while you can

[personal profile] philancer 2023-07-23 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Linhardt might want to hold off on that ‘sensible’ observation for a bit, that might still be stretching things. ]

A stance we’ve all tried to take here. Although the fact that we all seem to remember things differently makes Fodlan’s problems more confusing than anything.

[ It helps, that those who had been Summoned were among those who hadn’t wanted the war in the first place - and Sylvain was no exception to that list. He’d fought, because their Kingdom had been invaded and he had lands and friends to defend. But he’d been among the voices pleading with Dimitri to reach out to the Alliance as allies, to try and temper their Prince’s blinding rage after they’d found him alive. For all the good it had done him. He’d still ended up standing on the edges of Gronder Field once more, dreading the battle to come.

Unlike some, being Summoned to the Free Cities before he had to ride out to battle that morning had been a miracle and a blessing - one he didn’t take for granted. ]

Oh, I assure you, not all the rumors were overblown. [ His smirk widens a little at that, mischief glinting in dark eyes. ] I have been known to be very ungentlemanly, when the situation demands. But I assure you, none ever complained about it afterwards.

[ Except Felix, really, who spent much time bemoaning Sylvain’s lack of attention in keeping his other lance skills honed.

He lets his head fall back with a laugh, however, at the melting comment. ]
Finally, a hint of sympathy. I assure you, I melt a great deal, much to Claude and Hilda’s continuing amusement. Why anyone would choose to live in such a place is beyond me. [ But the fact that Linhardt’s been Summoned by Thorne…]

I’ve heard that the Professor and Edelgard had been Summoned by Thorne, for a time. That was before my arrival. When I got here, Claude was the only familiar face to be found, although Petra had been Summoned at the same time as I. We’ve wondered at it, a time or two. Why we’ve ended up where we have - if there was intent behind it or mere coincidence.

Yes, Hilda explained that to me. I understand the situation, but I do not Like it. You are correct that it is likely Fodlan's problems are not solely down to our own stupidity despite what I used to believe.

[There is an emphasis to Linhardt's voice that makes it clear he does not like it on the level that he does not like what he saw in Remire or how he does not like harming others. The math of these multiple Fodlans quickly spiraled out of Linhardt's ability to make sense of, and something about that feels fundamentally wrong. Every part of his mind screams if he thinks on it too long, particularly when he considers the implications of time meddling in the context of the attempts to control Fodlan over the years.

In that respect, Gautier's over the top, completely ridiculous and obviously inauthentic flirting is almost a relief. It's very grounding. The opposite of an existential crisis.]

I'm glad to hear it; I'm not one to let what I should do stand in the way of what I want to do. [His lips quirk slightly, but otherwise Linhardt's expression remains placid, speaking the innuendo laden sentences as easily as any other.] And I find a fair amount of what I want is most improper, so I do cherish like-minded company.

[He spends too much time teasing his more upright friends to back down. Imagine if anybody knew Linhardt were ever flustered. That would be a Most Dire Situation.]

A bold question to ask from a man whose ancestors voluntarily locked themselves in an ice box.

[Both Gautier territory and the desert sounded equally unpleasant to Linhardt, who had grown up in the temperate climates of Hevring and Merceus. There are places to live where the air does not hurt one's face.]

Although now I'd like to see Claude in a blizzard.

[It's an amusing picture, Claude shuffling around and trying to keep warm.]

I'd assumed my presence was willful: Thorne has been hospitable, though they have made no demands on me and I do not entirely trust that.

[He spends all day in libraries and working on his magical theories. Nobody bothers him. The only truly chafing thing Linhardt is experiencing at the moment is limited mobility and although he dislikes it, it's not the first time he's been locked up 'for his own good' and it won't be the last time he needs to find a way out either.]

The idea that they may not have the control they'd like over the process is an intriguing one. It may explain why I am present and not Lysithea von Ordelia. She would be more compliant as well.

[He is probably the only person who ever called Lysithea 'compliant'. The fact is Lysithea cares about the opinions of authority figures. Linhardt doesn't.]

!!! no peace in the hot springs, ever

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-07-23 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ On any Nocwich weekend, the spas and springs are a required visit. Now's especially true today as Claude absently rubs a sore spot in his shoulder earned by way of testing a new bow strength with a nod to the attendant as he passes through. He's only half paying attention when he approaches this pool, mostly out of habit of learning to let his guard down (slightly) and because there's always new faces in Nocwich every time he goes simply by how the portals worked. Still, he's mostly polite about the etiquette of it all as he leaves his clothes stacked in a pile on one chair rather than scattered around, and takes care with not rippling the water too much when getting in.

Or so he thinks, anyway, and a grin flits across his face as the other occupant grumbles in sound alone while he focuses on not slipping on the springs' bottom while taking a seat. Then whoever it is speaks, and Claude stops in place even though he's somewhere between crouching and sitting proper because that's a voice he hasn't heard in a long time. Maybe he should've accounted for the possibility of a different kind of new faces around when it's been a while. ]

Hey now, that's no way to talk to the resident lifeguard around here. I'm just doing my duty and checking in to make sure everyone's enjoying themselves, and it seems you are.

[ He's no such thing, and it's said with facetious amusement to go with it just to make that clear as he finally settles back and eyes Linhardt for a few seconds, at the ready to smile as soon as the other opens his eyes. By this point he's been through this routine too many times to find it entirely strange even if wisps of it are still present because - well. Who could've ever planned for this? ]

Though to answer your question, the other ones are full so it seems no one wanted to disturb your nap but me by gracing you with my delightful company.
sleepfan: (Snob)

Absolutely NONE. Zero peace.

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-23 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Why.

This is why he hadn't wanted anyone to know he was here. Linhardt groans in response to hearing Claude von Riegen's voice. He did need to speak to Claude about a lot of things - of all the people Hilda has said are present, Claude is the most likely to have accurate records for his consultation and the most likely to agree to some goals he would like to pursue.

But not now. It's warm and he's sleeping.

WHY.

Without opening his eyes, Linhardt responds.]

Anybody who drowns in this is stupid enough to deserve such a fate.

[Finally, he accepts that Claude isn't going to leave and opens his eyes with another loud yawn, stretching his arms up and arching his back before settling back into a more proper posture.]

So you are the least considerate person here.

[Pot meet kettle.]

I do need to speak to you. Would it be advised to do so here?

[Is it safe or should they avoid topics of interest? Linhardt does not know Claude well, but he remembers Claude from Abyss well enough to trust his survival instinct. He can keep secrets.]
godshattering: (pic#15894891)

that's fitting for abraxas and its lack of peace tbh

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-07-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ That comment about stupidity gets an immediate snort of laughter from Claude he doesn't bother to stifle or disguise as anything other than plain amusement while stretching out on his side of the spring. Being crowned the least considerate, however, does earn Linhardt the tiniest flourishing bow completed with just the wave of one hand to signify what's absolutely a mockery of (an extreme version of) court etiquette. Something he's not missed, really, so it's nice to have someone else here who won't want to bother with it either.

There's a few things he needs to ask here now that he's gotten that initial-meeting-of-someone-else-from-Fodlan thing down to practically a science, what with how often it's happened. On the other hand, it's not like either of them are (probably) going anywhere at the moment, so there's no rush.

Claude's about to bring something else up more specific to their location as a whole, but the words on the tip of his tongue are put on pause at what Linhardt says next. Though the expression on his face doesn't change from a genial one, something beneath it sharpens in interest. Never say he doesn't like a good question with an implication behind it. ]

That depends on the topic. If it's about Fodlan, then, [ he'll complete that sentence with a carefree shrug of one shoulder, considering there's no one else here who cares about Fodlan anywhere near as much as those from it and even then? Interest might be a strong word for it. ]

But if it's about our current location or anywhere else related to it, as in on the same map, and includes specifics then waiting would be better. Anyone told you about the Horizon yet?

[After Claude bows in a clearly mocking fashion, Linhardt fights the urge to snort himself and settles with splashing Claude. It's not the most mature response, but neither of them are being very mature at the moment.]

How dare you take that title from me - such inconsideration is a clear assault on my honor as the least considerate member of the Fodlanese nobility. I must redouble my efforts to be vexing lest you overtake me.

[Linhardt clearly isn't serious - he ruins his portrayal of a 'proper' and competitive noble a la Ferdinand, Constance, or Lorenz Gloucester by yawning between sentences. He isn't redoubling his efforts towards anything. Ew. Effort. Even thinking the word makes Linhardt crinkle his nose in distaste.]

Very well.

[The change in Claude is noted, but not commented on. After all, if they cannot speak freely here then there is a chance they are being watched, which means that drawing attention to Claude's personal habits would give them away to said watchers and be quite rude.]

No. What is Horizon? Or where? Or when...

[More? There's more? He barely has a handle on any of this. It's maddening: The world isn't supposed to be too complicated for him. Is this what all math feels like to Caspar?]

I do have information about Fodlan I believe you need to know. Hilda has informed me that you are from a Fodlan where the Alliance emerged victorious from our ill-advised war.

[ There's an easy enough grin at Linhardt's reaction given it's more or less exactly the kind of thing he'd hoped to provoke, and with no regrets. It's also a relief, in some ways, to find that no matter what time might end up being between them both - aside from the obvious surface level amounts - he hadn't incorrectly predicted it'd entertain the other man.

But all of that can wait for a bit, especially as Linhardt mentions Hilda has already given him some details. That's helpful considering it narrows down the scope (somewhat) of what he can likely leave out when it comes to explanations, and then also that no one's mentioned the Horizon yet is another clue. Claude hums and tries to think of a better answer to that than what he'd offered Sylvain and Petra some many months ago. ]

I did, in regards to the war. I take it you didn't? [ The obvious possibility here is that Linhardt comes from the same timeline that Petra did, the thought of which causes a small flash of sorrow to go through him considering Petra would have loved to see him here. Nothing to do about that now, though. ] Anyway, I'll get to that in a minute because I think the Horizon is something you'll be even more interested in.

[ He's going to enjoy this, Claude decides, if only for the reaction as he sits up slightly from where he'd slipped further between the water and puts on a very serious expression. Only some of that is for entertainment's sake, since he knows how this is going to sound even if it is the truth with room for the questions he's sure will follow. ]

I don't know where you arrived - we can also cover that after this - but the Singularity is a giant rock formation that's the cause of a lot of upset around here for different reasons. We have a connection to it, allegedly, and part of that gives us some... added things we can do that the locals can't. The Horizon is one of them. You have to get someone to take you into it the first time, but it's basically some other plane we can get into to meet with the other Summoned across Abraxas and you can do whatever you want, including creating things. [ A smile then, somewhere on the rueful side. ] Sylvain's created Garreg Mach. It looks like it did back when we were students rather than what we'd know it as today.

[Claude has always been amusing. And charming. It's magnetic and discomforting all at once, like stepping off a stair but not realizing he's already on the floor. Linhardt always feels as though he is missing something. As though he is missing a sense similar to how Caspar has no talent for sensing magic.

For now, however, the bit of 'normalcy' is welcome.]

We are still fighting in my Fodlan.

[Linhardt sighs and his shoulders sag for a moment; when wouldn't they be? Even if they won this war, there would be more to do, and decisions to be made. Linhardt...does not resent the timing of his Summoning. The time is welcome. He needs to think.]

I would be pleased to discuss something else.

[Talking to the socially adept isn't all bad.

He listens to Claude closely, tilting his head to the side and watching the other man with careful blue eyes like a cat.]

I know about the Singularity and that we are connected to it. I have been studying it in Thorne.

[It's a giant magical artifact nobody understands from a possibly divine source, Claude. What else would Linhardt hone in on?]

Do the creations have to adhere to conventional physical laws?

[Or could he actually map the complex magical topographies he wants to explore?]

In terms of being escorted, does the escort have to have any property other than being one of the Summoned?

[He muses on that requirement. Hilda had introduced him to the magical thought network, perhaps in addition to thoughts being communicated a key could be as well? And that is what happens - one Summoned passes a 'key' to another when they bring them into the Horizon?]

Are there fish in the pond?
