TEST DRIVE MEME #13

Test Drive Meme
Welcome to the Test Drive Meme for Abraxas! This meme is run a little bit differently than most in that you'll be asked to choose one of the three different arrival scenarios below for your character to take. If you have any questions about this mechanic or anything else related to the TDM, please take a look at the questions below or ask one of your own under the Questions header below. For general game questions please still use the FAQ.

Below are some links to information you may find useful. Our Setting pages have information about the world itself as well as current events for each nation, while our Game History page outlines the game's story so far.

Setting | Game History | NPCs | Arcana

You can also find answers to questions asked on previous TDMs in their respective questions threads.

The TDM is forward-dated to when the summonings occur in-game (when applications are accepted), at the start of August.

Summoning
You awaken suspended in the abyss, silent darkness stretching out in all directions. If you try to yell, you'll find that the sound doesn't carry. If you try to move, you'll find it's impossible to tell whether or not you're actually getting anywhere. If you reach for an item you were carrying last time you remember being awake, your hand will only touch bare skin.

You're naked and floating helplessly through the void, and what little air you have in your lungs is running out.

There's a pinprick of light that almost looks like a faraway star but as it grows it becomes clear that it's actually quite close. It's hard to make out any individual objects, as if you're looking from beneath rippling water.

A hand plunges through and you realize water is just what it is. Whether you take hold of the hand or not it will grab you and yank you up through the surface, lifting you out until you're sprawled on solid ground - still unclothed.
Arrival
You'll find yourself summoned to one of the following three major nations: the extravagant and magical Kingdom of Thorne, the bustling and advanced Free Cities, or the tightknit and faith-driven rural community of the Solvunn Commune.

If you had any powers, they feel unusually weak. Attempts to use magic or enhanced strength or powers of any sort fizzle out without any effect, but they don't feel completely gone, either. After a week or so, your abilities will return.

When you gather your bearings at last, you look up into a series of unfamiliar faces...and equally unfamiliar surroundings.
Welcome to Thorne
Set into an indent on a marble slab behind the fountain is a card bearing the image of one of the Arcana. An apprentice mage - the one whose hand lifted you out of the fountain - brushes the water off on their robes and runs back to join a group of three others, who all stare intently at another mage with highly decorated robes and a large, heavy book. The man peers up at you for a moment and starts flipping through the book.

"One moment," he says, not bothering to look up from the tome. He looks tired. "I am Ambrose Rhett, the High Mage of the Kingdom of Thorne. We’ll explain everything in a moment, but for now, please calm down. You’re completely fine."

Regardless of your response, he keeps flipping through the pages, until he stops on one specific passage, stares at it for a moment, and then nods, satisfied. "Excellent." He motions for one of the young apprentice mages over. "Settle our guest in, please. I don't have all day."

The apprentice hurries forward with a fine silk tunic, pants, and some basic sandals. With a wave of their hand, the clothes reshape to fit you perfectly. Once you're dressed, the apprentice leads you into the hallways of Castle Thorne, prattling on about the kingdom, names of royals and nobles, and, of course, the reason why you're here: the world itself is in great peril, and tales of your exploits have reached far and wide across universes. If asked about these exploits, the apprentice will simply smile and shrug. The High Mage was happy to see you and that's good enough.
◎ Surroundings
Castle Thorne is where not only royals and members of the court reside, but includes the surrounding city itself. Now in summer, the weather warm and mild. To anyone used to hotter climates, it might even feel somewhat cool. In the distance, you can see snow-covered mountain peaks that are beginning to melt, and the gardens are in bloom. The castle is enchanted to be at a comfortable temperature.

As you walk or look around, you take in some of what's going on around you:
  • The North Wing, devoted to housing the Summoned, is tightly guarded against outsiders. As one of the Summoned, you're free to come and go. The guards aren't keeping anyone prisoner. They're there to protect you, and they take their jobs seriously.

  • Apprentices, kitchen staff, guards - everyone seems to be bustling and busy. Though some tension is in the air when locals debate an execution involving the gods in Solvunn or the recent emergence of the Fey, there's also a buzz of excitement from the Crown Sprint - where a noble steed named Summer Eclipse and her rider Maertisa Cassidy were declared this year's winner.

  • Life in the Castle has chiefly resumed, but the permanent increase in guards indicates a crisis in the past. There are also rumors of unusual rifts and creatures appearing out of nowhere.
◎ Exploring
Despite the troubles that plague the land, Castle Thorne and its surrounding city have much for you to indulge in.
Equestrian Exhibition
Hot on the heels of the extravagant Crown Sprint, Castle Thorne continues the celebration by displaying its finest horses. These include the Haylean Warmblood - bred for Hayle's mountainous cold regions - and the oldest breed in Thorne, the Circinean, named after Thorne's original settlement by Lake Circinus. You can get riding lessons from participants in the Crown Sprint, visit or volunteer to take care of the horses, or help the children who've arrived to take part in smaller pony races. While the children just want to have fun, many hail from noble and aristocratic families, so you find yourself witnessing a certain temperament from their parents...who are significantly more competitive and cutthroat than their kids.

Magic Lessons
Regular magic lessons are held by apprentice mages as part of their training, usually involving learning to cast a small spell. Join if you wish! The spell they will be teaching is conjuring a modest defensive light shield that can protect against a single magical blow. The spell relies on Academic Magic which involves a few words said correctly. You'll likely need a few lessons to grasp it unless you're well-versed in magic already. The class of fresh-faced students means there's a constant bright explosion of light coming from the practice room as the spells fail. It isn't dangerous, but it can be annoying.

Occupying Octopi
Due to the unusual rifts last month, a few octopi have made their way into Castle Thorne. These cephalopods have been spotted lurking in the baths, hiding in pools and lakes, and even taking a dip in the kitchen's water basin. Mages are desperate to catch the loose octopi so that they can return the animals to the ocean. The mages will give you a simple enchanted tracking orb to help locate them, but octopi have a habit of being elusive and squeezing into tight spaces - so retrieving one might take some innovation! Maybe it'll go smoother with a partner?

Nocwich
Nocwich, which is shrouded in an eternal darkness and is home to the werewolves and the vampires, opens on the first weekend of every month for a total of 3 days. Shortly after arriving, you'll be given a pendant that allows you to travel to and from the portal. In Castle Thorne, the portal is a short walk around the back of the castle. You can enter Nocwich freely and explore what's available in Oleuni Square and Luna. You won't be able to enter Ikorr nor will you be able to exit into another faction's portals. Once there, you're welcome to meet those from other factions, take in the sights, and - if you've come by some money or a generous soul - even make a few small purchases. Inns are available for a fee if you want to stay overnight. Otherwise, you'll need to return home through the portals each day.
◎ Settling In
When you're ready to rest, you're shown to the North Wing, which has been set up as living quarters for you and your fellow newcomers. There are four people to a room, but each generously-sized bed has opaque curtains that can be drawn around it. You can meet your roommates here and discuss your shared situation (those who were previously brought in may have a great deal of information to tell you).

Although you can leave the castle, you can't leave its surrounding city with the exception of entering Nott via portal in order to assist with rebuilding or visiting Nocwich. Borders are especially well-guarded right now due to the recent attacks. Besides, Castle Thorne gives you everything you need: fine clothes, great food and wine, massive libraries, and all the magic and knowledge you could want. Isn't that plenty? You won't be given money as you're provided for, so if you want to do some personal spending later, you'll have to find a job in the city on your own.
Welcome to the Free Cities
Dry warmth hits you at once as you're set on a hard floor of dull ruddy stone. Men and women in unfamiliar uniforms of brown and red leather stand in a semi-circle around a small pool of water - the very pool you were just pulled from. The water is still now, rimmed in pale gold tiles with odd symbols etched into them. Across it is a raised pedestal with a card bearing an Arcana symbol.

A guard covers you with a simple robe and returns to their place in the semi-circle. Before you stands another woman, dressed in a more elaborate and decorated uniform than the others. A sword rests at her hip. She carries an air of authority as she approaches you with a nod and a warm smile. "Sorry about the circumstances. Take a minute, catch your breath. I'm Prime Minister Marlo Reiner and you're in The Free Cities. That nice lady over there will explain everything to you and get you settled."

A robed mage off to the side approaches to help you up. She brings you out of the cave through a corridor that angles upwards until you emerge in what looks like some kind of storage facility. You'll learn you're in the Cadens Desert Outpost 003, a military base on the outskirts of the major city of Cadens. You're told the world is in delicate and dangerous times, and you're needed to help. You're important and they're very grateful you're here.
◎ Surroundings
While you're currently at the outpost just outside of the city proper, Cadens on the whole is a large bustling city. Temperatures are sweltering, and the climate is hot and dry. Even the summer nights are relatively warm. Look to the west and you'll see a long stretch of desert wasteland. This is the infamous Badlands. The soldiers don't recommend going out there unprepared - you're likely to face a slow death to the elements or be eaten. Reaching Cadens is possible by wagon, a trip of about 2 hours each way. You're asked to return by sundown for your own safety... but no one will chase after you if you don't.

You'll be given a military style uniform with your Arcana stitched on it where a formal rank would normally be. As you walk or look around, you take in some of what's going on around you:
  • Libertas shows signs of having suffered a devastating attack, but the majority of it has been rebuilt including a new garden park memorial that commemorates the lives lost. Chatter has shifted from the fire attacks to the gruesome execution involving the gods in Solvunn, as well as the Summoned's invitation to visit the Feywilds last month. Scholars and laymen alike can be heard debating the nature of gods, men, and the Fey.

  • From Cadens to Aquila to Libertas, the streets are guarded. Soldiers patrol all areas, especially those typically occupied by the Summoned. This includes a particular inn and tavern in the heart of Cadens - The Sarstina - where the Summoned like you are often found. It's evident they're here for your protection rather than to prevent you from moving freely. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is cheery. Many have just returned from a fulfilling trip into the desert known as The Firebrand, where hobbyists celebrate innovation, independence, and unique inventions.

  • Life in the Free Cities has chiefly resumed, but the permanent increase in guards indicates a crisis in the past. There are also rumors of unusual rifts and creatures appearing out of nowhere.
◎ Exploring
Despite the troubles that plague the land, the barracks and Cadens have much for you to indulge in.
Training Grounds
Non-lethal training weapons and obstacle courses are set up for anyone to use. The soldiers will be watching, and if you catch their attention they might approach you and encourage you to enlist. You're free to invite other new arrivals to spar, but be sure to keep things friendly and avoid trouble. Discipline is key in the barracks. If you're especially competitive, the soldiers will sometimes hold impromptu obstacle races with informal wagers made. They'll be happy to race against even the most unlikely of opponents, and you'll be judged more on your spirit rather than your skill. If you really impress them, they'll even buy you a drink.

Marble Engravings
A researcher named Esi Hollandse has unveiled her newest creation: a handheld "laser" tool powered by New Magic meant to help sculptors sculpt stone. Come visit the beautifully displayed marble sculptures created using this new technique, which allows for more refined carving techniques. Want to try it for yourself? Why not! With some guidance, you can create your own etchings on a small stone block and take home your newest piece of art.

Swan Song
Due to the unusual rifts last month, several swans have invaded Cadens and are now becoming a menace, stealing bread, grains, and desserts from market stalls and shops. You might come across a shopkeeper chasing a swan after it stole their cheese or a harried attendant at the museum shooing a bird away from their precious artifacts. Perhaps you could lend a hand? Or, you could find yourself an unsuspecting victim of a swan. Any captured swans can be brought to Portam Hall and delivered to one of the government departments there, though you might have to stand in line while grasping an unhappy bird. Be careful not to let it escape!

Nocwich
Nocwich, which is shrouded in an eternal darkness and is home to the werewolves and the vampires, opens on the first weekend of every month for a total of 3 days. Shortly after arriving, you'll be given a pendant that allows you to travel to and from the portal. In Cadens, the portal is a short walk away from the center of the city.
◎ Settling In
When you're ready to turn in, the barracks are waiting for you. They have a communal bathing room at the end of the hall, with curtains that can be pulled around the individual raised round tubs for privacy. Each barracks room is rather sparse. Six simple beds set against the wall, three on each side of the room, each with a trunk at the foot of it. You can greet your roommates here, most of whom will be new arrivals, as well.

If you plan on making use of your assigned quarters, you'll have your basic needs met: uniforms, a roof, bland food from the mess hall, and access to the training grounds. You won't be paid unless you formally enlist with the army. The longer you take advantage of the barracks, the greater the pressure to enlist. Some soldiers will start to see you as a freeloader if you refuse to join them yet continue to use their resources. If you're set on not enlisting, you can always strike out on your own in Cadens - but you won't be provided for and handouts are rare. You'll have to work to earn every copper and loaf of bread. Whether that's honest work is up to you.
Welcome to Solvunn
You're in a grassy clearing in the midst of a circle of large stone slabs stacked to look like doorways. In the middle is the same glimmering pool you were just pulled from. An elderly mage stands before an ornate altar. He holds an old leather-bound book in one hand and in the other is a card bearing an arcana symbol. "I detect no ill will from the gods," he says. "It seems we've been blessed with success."

Those that had gathered all breathe a sigh of relief and now seem pleased. One offers you some clothes of leather and knitted wool that seem to fit you perfectly. A rough-looking man steps forward once you're dressed and motions with his head outside of the stone circle. His speech is informal, his consonants harsh.

"Hold your horses, I can see all those questions coming about! Rowan March, at your service. I'm one of the council members of Solvunn. There's a lot to discuss, but it's best talked about over a hot meal." He leads you to a horse-drawn carriage and helps you up into the back. He talks the entire ride to the center of the Primary Settlement. You're told that the world hangs upon the brink of disaster and that there are those in this world that are happy to see it fall to ruin with their meddling.

You're important. The gods have graced them with your presence. They're delighted you're here.
◎ Surroundings
The Primary Settlement is full of greenery, blessed with the fresh ocean breeze. Winds are gentle and the temperatures are comfortably warm with light humidity. The scent of wildflowers fills the air. The shops, farms, and homes around you are all modest and unassuming. You get the sense that the people here prefer to blend in with their neighbors than stand out.

As you walk or look around, you'll be greeted warmly, even eagerly...though there's an edge of awestruck nervousness to some. Though the settlement is often quiet and calm, there's still plenty to take in:
  • Shops and stalls in Solvunn are booming with the fruits of spring and summer. Vendors are eager to barter goods and are in the habit of including extra gifts with any purchase or trades made. If you are looking for a good deal, now is the time!

  • Those in Solvunn are no longer discussing the execution of former Council member Josselyn Creed, but the ashes of her bones remain on display by an altar in the Primary Settlement - a reminder and a warning not to stray from the flock. As well, there's curious chatter surrounding the Summoned's invitation to visit the Feywilds last month.

  • Life in the Solvunn Commune has chiefly resumed, but the focus on appeasing the gods and increased shrine offerings indicate many have not forgotten the troubles of the past. There are also rumors of unusual rifts and creatures appearing out of nowhere.
◎ Exploring
Despite the troubles that plague the commune, the commune and its settlements have much for you to indulge in.
Goat Racing
That's right. One of Solvunn's fine traditions is its regular goat races. Meant to be a bit of informal fun, there's a pen of goats where you can choose a goat, get a number, and simply join one of the starting lines. These goats are not trained so the race is less of a race and more pure chaos as the goats do what they please. Whoever eventually wrangles their goat over the finish line wins. The only rule is that you can't pick up or physically pull your goat, but you're free to cajole, lure, or even use a bit of magic to get yours to the finish line first. Winners receive small prizes of cheese, ale, wood charms, woven baskets, and other similar tokens.

Shrine Supervision
During the recent Summer Equinox celebrations, the youth have a habit of holding their own tradition called the Guardian Séance. These unsanctioned rites are quickly stopped by Commune Elders, but there's been some damage and messes that need to be put right. Elders have asked you to supervise the adolescents who've been assigned to clean up the shrines and restore the damage they've caused. Beware of snakes in the grass! You're also welcome to help the teens with their task. Once completed, Elders will invite you to make an offering in the formal traditions of High Magic.

Bird Baths
Due to the unusual rifts last month, and with the convincing of a few of the Summoned, Solvunn has agreed to raise some of the unique pack birds on one of their farmlands. Unfortunately, the week's downpour has caused them to become very muddy. Desperate farmhands have asked for your help giving the birds a good wash to clean their dirty feathers. You can also help feed them grain and prevent any jealous goats from headbutting or fighting these docile birds.

Nocwich
Nocwich, which is shrouded in an eternal darkness and is home to the werewolves and the vampires, opens on the first weekend of every month for a total of 3 days. Shortly after arriving, you'll be given a pendant that allows you to travel to and from the portal. In Solvunn, the portal is a short walk away.
◎ Settling In
When you're ready for your bed, you're brought to the center of town and escorted to an apartment above one of the establishments in town. The living conditions are temporary if you'd like them to be: the local families would also be happy to host you in their home. In return, you'll be expected to contribute to their household, taking upon daily chores and repairs. While money has its uses, many establishments and craftsmen are happy to barter with your time or skill for their goods. You'll find your willingness to trade and your friendliness with the natives more valuable than gold.

You can even leave for the other two settlements if you like, but you're encouraged to remain in the Primary Settlement. Just be sure you have an invitation to the Secondary Settlement. There are tales of travelers visiting the secondary settlement without invitation disappearing without a trace. The gods are as hungry as they are protective.
Questions and Answers

If after reading these you're still unsure about anything, or your question wasn't covered, please feel free to hit up our Questions thread below!

How many slots are open?
Please check the Taken page for how many player, franchise, and canon slots are available. Activity check will be processed before applications open, so the count may change between now and then. Existing players can apply for a second character without restriction.
How do I choose a scenario for my character?
Pick whichever situation appeals to you most. Which faction your character is drawn into has nothing to do with their personal morality, beliefs, or how highly they regard themselves and their own accomplishments. Anyone can be put into any one of the situations.
What happens if my character refuses to comply with the NPCs?
They will be forgiven for their moment of panic or anger if they have one, and the faction leaders will try to calm them and persuade them further. If they put up too much of a fight and/or start actively attacking anyone, they will be warned once that everyone is willing to put them back in the well where they came from (see below), and if they continue to fight they will make good on that promise.
My character intends on causing a lot of trouble (destroying parts of the cities, murdering the NPCs, etc.), what would happen to them?
Characters who make too much trouble for the mages and other NPCs would be thrown back in the well (which will mean drowning in the void, not returning home). Brawling with other PCs and causing minor damage is fine and will be greeted with a cranky attitude and intervention from various NPC guards, and there will be plenty of opportunity for destruction and murder later, but for now the Abraxans have no desire to keep huge liabilities around.
Is the power loss for characters permanent?
No, but it does take a week or so for their powers to be back in full, and certain powers (determined on a case-by-case basis) may require nerfs. If your character has world-breaking powers, please discuss with the mods what modifications may be necessary.
Can my character leave the bounds of the nation?
In Thorne, characters can leave the castle but not the city. In the Free Cities, they can take a trip from the outpost to the nearest main city, Cadens. In Solvunn, they can explore the entirety of the Primary Settlement.
Can my character eventually change nations or kingdoms?
Yes, but tensions between the major nations are at an all-time high. Doing so is possible, but will require some plotting and discussion with the mods once you're in-game!
How much will my choice of scenario affect my character's plot later on?
This choice will determine where your character initially lives as well as the bias of the information they receive from NPCs (although other PCs can and most likely will give it to them a bit more straight). It will also affect your character's day-to-day life and development. Characters who seek technological advancements or combat will find more of it in the Free Cities while those keen on court politics and learning magic will have the most access to it in Thorne. Anyone who wishes to uncover the secrets of the Old Gods and forest mysteries will best do so in Solvunn.

This is not to say characters can't do these things from another faction - with effort and the help of friends, anything is possible! Don't get too anxious about your choice. This is just one of many, and every character in each scenario can work their way towards many individual goals and outcomes. Additionally, once in-game the Horizon will provide characters with a way to easily find cross-faction CR.
Are TDM threads mandatory for my application?
No, you may use other samples, but we encourage you to post to the TDM and get a feel for this game and its mechanics before you join. If you do not have a TDM thread you will still need to choose one of the three scenarios on your application.
What if I haven't settled on a sign yet?
Your Arcana sign won't have an immediate impact on your character beyond them seeing it on themselves or being told what it is by the locals. You're welcome to disregard those aspects in your prompts or try out different signs.
Can my character go to the Horizon?
First time visitors to the Horizon must be taken there by other characters, through either shared meditation or a physical journey to the Singularity, and all first-timers experience memory loss. For the purposes of the TDM, we suggest against using the Horizon.

If you're interested in threading with characters outside your borders on the TDM, you can utilize the Nocwich prompt which will allow all characters to meet in person regardless of arrival scenario.
What about making use of the network?
Much like Horizon they would need to be introduced to it by another PC, as no NPCs would be aware of the network or be able to access it. Because of this, we would advise against using this mechanic for TDM top-levels.
Can I try out more than one arrival scenario on the same TDM?
Yes, although only threads taking place in the arrival scenario you formally choose upon applying can count as canon. However, you're welcome to try out as many as you like on the TDM.

sleepfan: (Snob)

Absolutely NONE. Zero peace.

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-23 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Why.

This is why he hadn't wanted anyone to know he was here. Linhardt groans in response to hearing Claude von Riegen's voice. He did need to speak to Claude about a lot of things - of all the people Hilda has said are present, Claude is the most likely to have accurate records for his consultation and the most likely to agree to some goals he would like to pursue.

But not now. It's warm and he's sleeping.

WHY.

Without opening his eyes, Linhardt responds.]

Anybody who drowns in this is stupid enough to deserve such a fate.

[Finally, he accepts that Claude isn't going to leave and opens his eyes with another loud yawn, stretching his arms up and arching his back before settling back into a more proper posture.]

So you are the least considerate person here.

[Pot meet kettle.]

I do need to speak to you. Would it be advised to do so here?

[Is it safe or should they avoid topics of interest? Linhardt does not know Claude well, but he remembers Claude from Abyss well enough to trust his survival instinct. He can keep secrets.]
godshattering: (pic#15894891)

that's fitting for abraxas and its lack of peace tbh

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-07-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ That comment about stupidity gets an immediate snort of laughter from Claude he doesn't bother to stifle or disguise as anything other than plain amusement while stretching out on his side of the spring. Being crowned the least considerate, however, does earn Linhardt the tiniest flourishing bow completed with just the wave of one hand to signify what's absolutely a mockery of (an extreme version of) court etiquette. Something he's not missed, really, so it's nice to have someone else here who won't want to bother with it either.

There's a few things he needs to ask here now that he's gotten that initial-meeting-of-someone-else-from-Fodlan thing down to practically a science, what with how often it's happened. On the other hand, it's not like either of them are (probably) going anywhere at the moment, so there's no rush.

Claude's about to bring something else up more specific to their location as a whole, but the words on the tip of his tongue are put on pause at what Linhardt says next. Though the expression on his face doesn't change from a genial one, something beneath it sharpens in interest. Never say he doesn't like a good question with an implication behind it. ]

That depends on the topic. If it's about Fodlan, then, [ he'll complete that sentence with a carefree shrug of one shoulder, considering there's no one else here who cares about Fodlan anywhere near as much as those from it and even then? Interest might be a strong word for it. ]

But if it's about our current location or anywhere else related to it, as in on the same map, and includes specifics then waiting would be better. Anyone told you about the Horizon yet?
sleepfan: (Looking Down)

Linhardt just wants to relax is that SO WRONG?! (The worlds say yes)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-26 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[After Claude bows in a clearly mocking fashion, Linhardt fights the urge to snort himself and settles with splashing Claude. It's not the most mature response, but neither of them are being very mature at the moment.]

How dare you take that title from me - such inconsideration is a clear assault on my honor as the least considerate member of the Fodlanese nobility. I must redouble my efforts to be vexing lest you overtake me.

[Linhardt clearly isn't serious - he ruins his portrayal of a 'proper' and competitive noble a la Ferdinand, Constance, or Lorenz Gloucester by yawning between sentences. He isn't redoubling his efforts towards anything. Ew. Effort. Even thinking the word makes Linhardt crinkle his nose in distaste.]

Very well.

[The change in Claude is noted, but not commented on. After all, if they cannot speak freely here then there is a chance they are being watched, which means that drawing attention to Claude's personal habits would give them away to said watchers and be quite rude.]

No. What is Horizon? Or where? Or when...

[More? There's more? He barely has a handle on any of this. It's maddening: The world isn't supposed to be too complicated for him. Is this what all math feels like to Caspar?]

I do have information about Fodlan I believe you need to know. Hilda has informed me that you are from a Fodlan where the Alliance emerged victorious from our ill-advised war.

[ There's an easy enough grin at Linhardt's reaction given it's more or less exactly the kind of thing he'd hoped to provoke, and with no regrets. It's also a relief, in some ways, to find that no matter what time might end up being between them both - aside from the obvious surface level amounts - he hadn't incorrectly predicted it'd entertain the other man.

But all of that can wait for a bit, especially as Linhardt mentions Hilda has already given him some details. That's helpful considering it narrows down the scope (somewhat) of what he can likely leave out when it comes to explanations, and then also that no one's mentioned the Horizon yet is another clue. Claude hums and tries to think of a better answer to that than what he'd offered Sylvain and Petra some many months ago. ]

I did, in regards to the war. I take it you didn't? [ The obvious possibility here is that Linhardt comes from the same timeline that Petra did, the thought of which causes a small flash of sorrow to go through him considering Petra would have loved to see him here. Nothing to do about that now, though. ] Anyway, I'll get to that in a minute because I think the Horizon is something you'll be even more interested in.

[ He's going to enjoy this, Claude decides, if only for the reaction as he sits up slightly from where he'd slipped further between the water and puts on a very serious expression. Only some of that is for entertainment's sake, since he knows how this is going to sound even if it is the truth with room for the questions he's sure will follow. ]

I don't know where you arrived - we can also cover that after this - but the Singularity is a giant rock formation that's the cause of a lot of upset around here for different reasons. We have a connection to it, allegedly, and part of that gives us some... added things we can do that the locals can't. The Horizon is one of them. You have to get someone to take you into it the first time, but it's basically some other plane we can get into to meet with the other Summoned across Abraxas and you can do whatever you want, including creating things. [ A smile then, somewhere on the rueful side. ] Sylvain's created Garreg Mach. It looks like it did back when we were students rather than what we'd know it as today.

[Claude has always been amusing. And charming. It's magnetic and discomforting all at once, like stepping off a stair but not realizing he's already on the floor. Linhardt always feels as though he is missing something. As though he is missing a sense similar to how Caspar has no talent for sensing magic.

For now, however, the bit of 'normalcy' is welcome.]

We are still fighting in my Fodlan.

[Linhardt sighs and his shoulders sag for a moment; when wouldn't they be? Even if they won this war, there would be more to do, and decisions to be made. Linhardt...does not resent the timing of his Summoning. The time is welcome. He needs to think.]

I would be pleased to discuss something else.

[Talking to the socially adept isn't all bad.

He listens to Claude closely, tilting his head to the side and watching the other man with careful blue eyes like a cat.]

I know about the Singularity and that we are connected to it. I have been studying it in Thorne.

[It's a giant magical artifact nobody understands from a possibly divine source, Claude. What else would Linhardt hone in on?]

Do the creations have to adhere to conventional physical laws?

[Or could he actually map the complex magical topographies he wants to explore?]

In terms of being escorted, does the escort have to have any property other than being one of the Summoned?

[He muses on that requirement. Hilda had introduced him to the magical thought network, perhaps in addition to thoughts being communicated a key could be as well? And that is what happens - one Summoned passes a 'key' to another when they bring them into the Horizon?]

Are there fish in the pond?

[ That they're still fighting in Linhardt's timeline offers some clarification on when the other is from. There's still more to that to narrow down, Claude's sure, but he nods all the same. That sort of information can wait for the moment as well with so much else to be said. Mentioning discussing something else gets that wry smile on his own face to stretch a little wider though it's quickly followed by an eyebrow raise at the mention of Thorne as he studies Linhardt just as carefully beneath it all. ]

How's Thorne going so far? [ Genuine curiosity factors in there; while he knows some of the Summoned in Thorne, there's been no one from Fodlan there since he's been here. It's a chance for yet another set of eyes there and with someone who has the context of all of Fodlan's difficulties behind it, too. ] If I had to pick somewhere you'd end up, I think it would've been there. I get the impression they have access to much more magic than Solvunn does, and then considering the Free Cities hardly believes in magic at all...

[ He'll let that trail off since - to Claude - it goes without saying that seems like a recipe for the other's misery from what he remembers. It's certainly become a more interesting recently what with research and talks with those friends in Thorne. Linhardt's questions about the Horizon's capabilities make the corners of his mouth twitch with what's actually genuine amusement. He should've anticipated that, he thinks, and yet. ]

As far as I can tell, the Horizon seems to work in that whatever you want to create? You can. I've recreated some of the plants I've come across to experiment with them and they behave much as they would in... well, reality. Most of it seems to be based upon specific memories you have, as I've also been filling in some of the monastery library with books I remember. It'll be good to have you help out with that.

[ He's ready to be corrected on whatever mistakes he's made in the magical theory books, certainly. There's the passing thought of Linhardt being able to help with those he'd taught the couple spells he knows if time allows, and Claude makes a mental note of that. ]

And no, the process to get in is meditation but it requires physical touch from the Summoned who's been there before. Something about passing a link of some kind on, I'd imagine. You'll be pleased to know that the pond's full of fish waiting to be caught, even the godsforsaken goddess messenger.

[ A couple of his recent attempts to catch it were Less Than Ideal, much like the real thing. ]

[Linhardt wishes Claude would stop watching him: it always gives him an irrational urge to do something obscene or inappropriate. Like stick a finger up his nose. Sometimes he thinks he has something on his shirt which isn't an issue right now.]

It's fine.

[Given this is Linhardt - he of the thousands of complaints, he might as well as have been gushing.

I have somewhere to stay, there are libraries, and nobody is bothering me.

[It hasn't hit Linhardt yet that it's because for once in his life he's considered to be behaving so far - he's been staying in the castle and happily absorbing himself in magical theory. He sleeps a lot, but most other moments are spent working on magic and research. He isn't hiding anything yet and he's so allergic to politics he hasn't gotten on anyone's bad side. Like Bernadetta in a land that forbade talking.]

Thorne does brag about their magical prowess, but I don't consider them a credible source on their own power. Not many nations would say 'yes, this is our weakness'.

[Another thing Linhardt appreciates about Claude is that the other man maintains a healthy skepticism.]

Don't believe in magic.

[It's not a question. In Linhardt: 'What.']

Do they also disbelieve in rain? Or comets?

[Magic objectively exists. It doesn't need to be 'believed in'. If belief were necessary, Linhardt is certain his healing magic wouldn't work: He can't imagine Sothis bestowing power on the man fighting against her children.

Linhardt inhales sharply when Claude says that physics is malleable in Horizon. In that moment it's obvious why Linhardt and Caspar are best friends as something in the healer looks ecstatic and he's momentarily infused with energy and excitement. He's going to make so many weird topographical shapes.]

This is going to save. So. Much. Time.

It is similar to...to a magical math machine.

[Don't tell Linhardt about calculators.]

I see. Are you going to take me or should I ask Hilda?

[Either or. If Claude, he doesn't have to initiate contact. But Hilda would likely be a far more relaxing companion. Everything in life involves trade-offs.]

I'm glad there are fish. What about the teacher's offices?

[ Nobody yet, Claude's tempted to add, but that feels like it'd introduce something adversarial in when he doesn't mean it that way while appraising Linhardt. So far everything seems to align to what he'd remembered; much like the others from Fodlan who'd been on opposite sides of the war when they arrived, that's a relief. He does, however, offer a huff of laughter at that assessment of Thorne. ]

It's for the best to take anything they say with a massive amount of skepticism. When it comes to what their magic is possible of doing, however, none of us have to look any farther than what happened to Libertas last year for that. Thorne's queen was angered by something she assumed the Free Cities was responsible for and so she used fire magic to burn down half of the city.

[ So much for not introducing any far more somber topics into the conversation, but this much feels worth telling Linhardt so he understands that much about Thorne's monarchy. The Free Cities had certainly retaliated, too, so it's not like anyone is particularly innocent here in the end. There's an analogy there to Fodlan, he's sure, but he's not going to mention it unless asked. ]

Ah, I misspoke about the not believing part. [ Something like indignation he receives in response makes it easy enough to grin again as he rubs a hand over his jaw and squints at some rock formations across the spring while considering how best to rephrase that. ] It's more that they don't see the value in spells unless it's to aid technology which they prefer over magic, and when it comes to technology they certainly have plenty of it. There's several things here that the Church kept from being developed if those documents in Abyss are anything to go by.

[ There's an attempt to sound neutral on that last part, but whether it's entirely successful? Remains to be seen. The Church isn't a subject Claude particularly enjoys, even if it has its uses in being brought up now and then. ]

I can take you or Hilda can if someone else from Thorne doesn't, but if you'd rather do it while there then you could always find Istredd or Kyle and ask them. I know both of them and they won't mind. I should warn you that you won't remember anything on your first time in since there's some kind of temporary memory loss that happens, but after that it doesn't happen again. [ A curious look crosses his face before he remembers to disguise it when it comes to Horizon Garreg Mach, since: ] You'll be pleased to find the offices, rooms, just about everything fully intact in the Horizon. Looking for something in particular?

Linhardt this weird little magic gremlin in Castle Thorne at night

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that is right. Thorne does have a queen.

[Linhardt had wandered off in the middle of the apprentice mage's explanation. What Claude was telling him was not exactly making Linhardt inclined to expend any effort on Thorne's behalf. On the other hand, Claude himself should be taken with skepticism. Hilda had said Claude was withholding, and if he withheld from Hilda Linhardt can't imagine he's going to get more truth. Or Claude might genuinely be mistaken, or not privy to something important. Or the Free Cities and Thorne might be lying, rather like the Church and Arundel's people.]

Thank you for telling me. I will act accordingly.

[Linhardt yawns. He has no responsibilities. None of these people are his people. 'Act accordingly' means 'have an exit plan'. Linhardt isn't going down with the ship.

The Free Cities have what? Linhardt's face sharply whips towards Claude's and his eyes pierce the other man's.]

Do they have a ready supply of lenses? Or devices useful for increasing viewing size?

Why would anyone choose one?

[Both magic and technology are means of taking one's understanding of the world and using it to bend the world to one's wishes.]

The Church's restrictions were a tragedy. Why limit one's society in those ways?

[Linhardt sounds genuinely confused. Is it really about power? But why? Everybody could be eating peach sorbet and sleeping! There could be fewer famines, fewer plagues. Use all the tools at your disposal to improve life. Isn't that supposed to be what governing is?]

Who are those people and why should I talk to them?

[People.]

I don't like that.

[The not remembering. It's vulnerable. Linhardt doesn't like that.]

I like to sleep in Seteth's office. Professor Hanneman has some interesting notes in my Fodlan and we've found some of Seteth and Rhea's things as well.

Is the Professor's room the same in every Fodlan? What happens if two Summoned try to create a space together but they conceive of it differently?

[ There's a hint of a raised eyebrow at that blasé remembering of Thorne's monarchy, though it's done in passing considering there's much he doesn't know about the Free Cities' government himself. Besides that, it's not like Cadens is any safer beyond the illusion of it compared to Thorne's outright restrictions. Regardless, the warning's been passed on, and from what he knows about Thorne, any other dangers will likely make themselves apparent soon enough.

None of that matters as much as the technology aspect either, and Claude has to laugh at Linhardt's immediate interest. ]

Yes, there's a few ways to magnify things around the shops and markets. Speaking of someone else you should meet, it's definitely Viktor. He's in Cadens with the rest of us, but he's known for helping to create different inventions based upon requests as long as they're reasonable. He's a pretty talented scientist in his own right.

Istredd is a rather impressive mage, and Kyle is... [ another pause while he searches for the right description, if not one that'll impress upon Linhardt the importance of finding them both, ] exceptionally useful. He's observed a lot that I think you'll appreciate when it comes to learning more about where you are.

[ There are others, too, but those are the two people he's willing to bet Linhardt would be most interested in talking to first when it comes to getting useful information about being here. He shrugs slightly at the vulnerability part, considering he has no way to refute that and it's something which had certainly bothered him even with the promise of it being temporary.

Linhardt being concerned about places to sleep is something easy enough to smile over, though it's fleeting when he's caught off-guard by what's said next. Because: ]

Huh. I hadn't actually thought about that before. Teach's room is the same as I remember it being when he lived in it both at the academy and during the war. I'm not sure I have an answer for the latter, though Hilda created the aerie and we both created some wyverns within it. Wyverns we both remembered and agreed they seemed as we remembered, but now I'm curious. That's worth an experiment, I'd say. Maybe we could try it on somewhere like one of the halls or the cathedral.

[ Somewhere no one's particularly attached to, anyway. ]
sleepfan: (Actual Politeness 2)

All that Adrestian paranoia is going to come in handy.

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-07-31 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[Linhardt's face is calm in the face of the raised eyebrow. The warning is received: It is disappointing but not surprising to hear that his environment is not safe despite seeming to be so. He can't help but give Claude a smile; yes, he is interested in the technology. Manufacturing tools is not actually something Linhardt enjoys (it is too similar to the boring mundanities of Hevring's work), it is merely that it is easier for Linhardt to make his own in Fodlan than outsource them.]

I am going to need to secure money then.

[As well as an excuse for said money given his so far established disinterest and that he wouldn't immediately and obviously be spending it. Nations get so testy about trade over hostile borders. Hubert's coffee is fine, but smuggling cheese from Faerghus is a bridge too far. Of course.]

Does magic have any value in trade or would such an offer be received with hostility?

[If he could barter directly he may not need to handle currency. On the other hand, if it's received that badly he should keep quiet so nobody raises the price or refuses to sell to a mage. Which is...not something Linhardt has ever had to think about and it makes him feel something that goes in the feelings box. He's always had magic. Did they think he was evil when he was four? As a baby? What do they think of the others' Crests? Do they know?

Of course Claude has already started collecting a bevy of people that were 'useful'. That is a very extroverted, Claude thing to do. Likely Hilda and Sylvain as well to a degree. Linhardt himself raises an eyebrow at Claude in turn.]

I will keep that in mind: It is good to know that there is someone I can ask about things and receive a different and perhaps more neutral viewpoint.

[Linhardt goes back and forth about whether or not Claude is telling him all this to make a good impression and rope him into something later. He will cross that bridge if he comes to it. For now, the information sharing is mutually beneficial.

He gives Claude a more genuine smile when the other man offers to experiment with him, eyes lighting up. Linhardt's voice remains steady and calm, but he speaks a little more quickly than usual. He's excited.]

Abyss. We should do Abyss. The others won't have good memories of it, so we don't have to worry about their timelines getting mixed in, which would reduce the variables and make it easier to determine what is happening. And anywhere we don't agree on we can check against both our memories at school and later on to determine if our Fodlans differ due to decisions made recently or if there are also differences from before we were born.

[For example, if the books differed then that would mean there were differences between his Fodlan's and Claude's that existed far before the war going differently - Linhardt is assuming that their timelines shared a parent at some point (because surely there would be timelines where Fodlan didn't exist and ones where Linhardt didn't go to the Officer's Academy and ones where Almyra took over Leicester and so on), was it possible to identify the split?]

And test Horizon's limits at the same time.

[Which Linhardt is certain appeals to Claude. From what he's understood, Horizon is far more private than anywhere else and Claude likes to keep secrets.]
godshattering: (pic#15894891)

it ABSOLUTELY is, thorne tends to be paranoid as it is so it'll work perfectly

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-08-02 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That I can't answer. I'd assume Thorne would be more inclined to being offered magic as we know it rather than the Free Cities wanting magic to be imbued into something with purpose beyond spells alone.

[ Something Istredd or Kyle can tackle, however, since one or both of them will know more about that. There's other far more magically inclined people there than he'll ever be himself, or so he's heard. Claude's about to add onto that in the spirit of curiosity, but then. Then he's tempted to roll his eyes at the neutral viewpoint mentioned, but - no, on second thought, he definitely rolls his eyes a bit at that while still smiling in actual entertainment over something expected. ]

Ask away, but I'm not in the business of withholding information about Abraxas. That'd go against all of us needing to work together considering none of us know why we're here when it comes to being brought into a place faced with yet another war between three nations.

[ Still: far from the first time in his life when he's not been believed or had something said treated with even the mildest of suspicion, so he's not going to dwell on it. They were on opposite sides of a war and in the spirit of honesty, it's hardly as though he'd given most anyone many reasons to trust him back at the academy.

Or in Abyss, though Claude's expression brightens with something too quick to be anything but genuine at the mention of it being their ideal experiment. ]

Perfect. Maybe if we do our best it won't offend Yuri so much if he ever manages to show up here. [ As if any of this is voluntary, though he brings a hand up from beneath the water to wave in a vague gesture like he's considering some landscape between them. ] I'm sure between the two of us we can manage to recreate the underground quite well. Hilda might have started on it at one point but that place is so big there'll be plenty left for us to work on building out, and I haven't spent much time working on any part of Garreg Mach while there.

[ That test of the Horizon's limits is intriguing too, and for a second he's tempted to tell Linhardt about the times a few months ago when he found himself trapped in places within it he'd never seen before and didn't belong to any Summoned. But - considering at least one of those wasn't so pleasant, perhaps that's a better topic for later. Something to ease into, certainly, if the Singularity doesn't take care of that like when he'd arrived. ]

I suppose it goes without saying I'd like to start with the library down there since there's quite a few things I'd like to have as references again, and I have a feeling your memory will help with that. There are some things we learned during the war that I think we can use to fill in some of those missing pages in the books.

Thorne is full of mages; magic is not a particularly rare skill set. Therefore it is worth less in trade.

[Which would mean more effort for less return. Linhardt prefers to be efficient with his time. He'll need to find something that he can 'charge' more for.

When Claude rolls his eyes, Linhardt looks at him in confusion. Why? He hadn't said anything that would warrant it... but then Claude speaks. Oh. Often, Linhardt wishes people were like math or magic: both of them had very clear success and failure states. People did not.]

I meant that it would be beneficial for me to have someone to speak to in Thorne that would offer context to what we experience there. So far I only have what is at best biased information and at worst propaganda. You value getting to the truth of things from what I remember of you, so unlike the other Summoned, if I speak to this Kyle person I can trust that he will be more objective. You're not in Thorne.

[However, if Claude wants to discuss the matter of his trustworthiness, Linhardt sees no reason not to.]

Trust is a spectrum. I trust you more than most of the other Summoned, but not completely. I believe you when you say you will not withhold information about our situation because we have a mutual interest in learning about what is going on so we can act accordingly. And just as I consider you more trustworthy because I have some idea of your character and how you act in times of crisis, I'd assume that you feel similarly if I was worth gathering information on.

[Linhardt is a relatively known quality compared to Summoned from other worlds, but he expects Claude has more knowledge of Edelgard, Hubert, and Ferdinand. Leaders have to be judicious with their time.]

I also think you are very deliberate with your words and you specified you won't withhold information on Abraxas for a reason, and that may mean you will withhold about Fodlan. I find that deeply annoying and irritating but it is to be expected from those of you who care about politics.

[Somewhere in Linhardt's head, Hubert's eye is twitching: "You can't tell people you don't trust them."]

I also find it deeply disappointing as I was under the impression you were an intelligent man. And personally frustrating: There are things I want to share with you about Fodlan but I am not interested in an inequal exchange or creating a precedent where I do not benefit from our association. At the same time, what I want to share would save lives so I am not certain what should take priority.

[There. That's all he has to say, and it's truthful. Linhardt doesn't mind sharing information with Claude, but it not going both ways will bother him because it places him in a subordinate position and he refuses that.]

Assuming we know if Yuri is here. He strikes me as the kind of person to watch for a long time before acting.

I can fill in many of the books in Abyss, yes.

[Linhardt sighs.]

If only Monica were here. You wouldn't be aware, but she had a perfect memory. I hated that about her.

[Arguing with her had been infuriating; usually Linhardt could talk his way into things by bringing in information other people wouldn't have, but Monica remembered everything. She was impossible.]

[ Some part of him can admit - to himself only, of course - that part of that had been a test. Not a particularly good or well thought out one like he might've been able to come up with if he'd known he'd be walking into the hot springs to find Linhardt here, but it very quickly narrows down the lingering (and not yet thought of) questions he has about the other man's stance on things.

At the mention of mutual interest there's another slight, casual handwave like they're discussing something trivial and not establishing a clear baseline of where things are, where they intersect, and where they'll go from here. But despite any appearances he's giving off intentionally or otherwise, Claude's listening very carefully. Trust is a spectrum, and though he'd had no desire to become adversaries, it's nice to hear once again they won't be that simply because of which sides they stood on during a war which has turned out differently for them both. All of it is reasonable. All of it is a fairly accurate assessment with which he can find no finer points to argue.

By the end of it, Claude supposes he has his answer about what would've happened had his intent to be duplicitous rather than playing up something else. And most of all, he finds he rather respects Linhardt for it. ]

Something tells me now's not the time to compliment myself when it comes to matters of intelligence. I meant more that there was time to tackle the rest of what comes from Fodlan later than having to do it all now. Abraxas is more than enough to get used to, trust me. [ There's the slightest wry quirk of one corner of his mouth then in partial amusement and partial callback to what Linhardt's just said. ] If the past year's taught me anything, it doesn't get less confusing the longer you're here.

And hiding somewhere to wait for the perfect moment does some exactly like something Yuri would do, truthfully. There's been occasional mandatory visits we've had to take so it would've been difficult to miss him on those, not accounting for the months in between where he might've been here and then not. But... [ Now there's a crease in his brow that's not something put upon or meant to be anything other than what it is, since there's something else to be addressed in there despite saying chatting about Fodlan would wait for sometime later just seconds ago. ] Monica. As in... the girl we found with Flayn?

[ That's both a question and a subtle additional question in one, the latter being meant for if it's another difference in what they remember since there's more to it than that from what he lived. Even as someone who prides himself on remembering, there are some things about that year before the war which seem like they're etched in his memory. But - it wouldn't be the first time or even the tenth or twentieth time he's discovered his memories don't match those of someone else from Fodlan, so it seems worth asking. ]

I have a feeling your memory's still far better than mine when it comes to the matters of magic. Promise you won't judge me too harshly when you see some of the textbooks, alright?

[Claude isn't the only one testing - Linhardt had heard about Horizon before meeting Claude and he'd already learned that apparently Claude withheld information from Hilda. Seeing what Claude does and doesn't mention about Horizon is useful.]

I see. I do often misunderstand social intentions. Hence why I find them frustrating.

[It doesn't take much convincing for Linhardt to accept that Claude may have had different intentions for specifying that he was going to be forthcoming about matters in Abraxas, but Linhardt is also not going to assume that Claude is telling the truth about why he said what he had. Claude lying and Linhardt misunderstanding seem to be equally likely at the moment, so it would be unwise to assume one way or the other. It also isn't the most striking question that Linhardt needs answered and he doesn't really care if Claude is plotting things so long as Linhardt's boundaries are respected.]

You've been here a year. Of course - Fodlan is not going to be your immediate concern. Abraxas is preferable to Fodlan in at least one way: Nobody knows who I am here. I do not mind that it is confusing, although not being able to identify what variable or variables are throwing off all of my warp casting is frustrating. The math still seems solid, so there must be additional things to consider that Fodlanese magic has not isolated.

Mandatory visits?

[Now Linhardt frowns and his displeasure is simple: Forced social interaction? Being made to go do something? It's like watching a cat hiss; Linhardt just looks disgruntled at the idea. He wants to travel, but he wants to travel on his own terms.]

Explain these mandatory visits.

[Linhardt raises an eyebrow at Claude's question, but otherwise doesn't comment. He does not have enough information to read into it.]

I was referring to the real Monica, not the thing wearing her likeness that was planted in Garreg Mach after Flayn's kidnapping - I knew her somewhat before she went to the Officer's Academy. It was obviously not her, and I mentioned my concerns to the Professor, but...

[Linhardt trails off - They both understood there were reasons to be quiet about some things and by that point it had been hard to trust anybody.]

I didn't like Monica, but she had the best memory of anyone I've ever known. Much better than mine. Which is why it was so frustrating she had the intellectual curiosity of a rock. Or Hubert. She would have been useful filling in the library.

[And speaking of the library... Linhardt gives Claude a small smirk.]

I promise nothing. And red ink will be easy to come by in Horizon.

[ Nobody knows who I am here gets a smile from him, considering: that's a sentiment he can relate to all too well. It'd been a welcome one when he'd arrived and discovered he was the only one from Fodlan here, then one where his feelings had changed on it slightly when that part about being the only one really sank in, and shifted yet again when others arrived. It's not something he regrets though, or rather it's something he's come to appreciate.

There's still much to be said for all of them arriving here without all the tangled mess of Fodlan attached to it. Nothing will change that part of things no matter who's here or isn't. ]

Yeah, mandatory. The first one was when this place, [ with a gesture meant to encompass all of Oleuni Square around them, ] opened since no Summoned had been to Nocwich before. I don't know that the Abraxan natives had either, but that trip was... eventful by the end. The results of that were what caused Thorne's queen to bomb Libertas, and needless to say things were tense for a while after and the Free Cities retaliated. Luna offered to host a mediation where we were all required to attend, and then more recently the Feywilds invited the Summoned only to visit.

[ There's more to it than that, but Claude opts for the quick overview since - there's probably a limit to how much Linhardt wants to know all at once. And besides that, as discussed it won't hurt to have some other perspectives in there on those very events.

But the explanation of Monica makes sense; there's times that he forgets about there being a chance for the others to know each other from the year prior. It also brings forth the vague memory of Hilda commenting about Monica back after the rescue, though the revelation of Monica being Kronya has since overridden most everything else. There's a slow nod from him at the confirmation that much remains the same between their timelines. Claude doesn't even know if that's reassuring or not.

At the same time, that was so long ago and with Those Who Slither In The Dark all but eliminated he decides it doesn't matter. Not nearly as much as pressing a hand to his chest in mock outrage a second later like Linhardt's said something truly worrisome and when that smirk makes it all too easy to fall into an older and more familiar routine for him than explaining yet another continent with three nations' many faults to someone. ]

Not the red ink! Who are you, Teach? I don't think my ego can recover from seeing so many corrections all at once. At least take mercy on me and space them out a little bit.

Do you know concretely that all the Summoned were present at these prior gatherings, or were you merely told as such by representatives from each nation?

[How mandatory is mandatory? Are these meetings 'attending class' mandatory or 'going to battle' mandatory? Linhardt doesn't like large gatherings, and large gatherings that he's forced into in a location that he's unfamiliar with are bound to be even worse. Though at least it would be easier for him to hide in the back. Or just sleep nearby. That thought cheers Linhardt up at least: Even if he has to go places, nobody is going to care enough to make him participate.

It also doesn't escape Linhardt's notice that Thorne's actions are elucidated while the Free Cities' are limited to 'retaliation'. Linhardt isn't going to dismiss what he is being told about Thorne: That would be foolish. It would simply also be foolish not to note the informational discrepancies.]

Hopefully whatever nonsense the nations want to participate in, from this point on they will leave civilians out of it.

[Linhardt also finds it strange that Claude seems to hone in on Monica and then...drop the strand of conversation altogether? Yes, of course he jumps around frequently but most other people don't. Claude is a hard person to read, but there's some nostalgia in that as well - similar to when he tried to peek over at Claude's work in Abyss and it never worked. Linhardt doesn't understand Claude.]

I most assuredly am not Professor Byleth. She cares if we hurt ourselves - I'm just going to watch. I don't care if you singe your eyebrows off or trip yourself and faceplant onto the floor.

[It's true. He doesn't. Linhardt only cares if their magic blows up in their faces if it wakes him up.]

What if I only correct the mistakes that would kill you in red ink? The others you could discover for yourself.

[Probably in ways that would be far more bruising to Claude's ego but also far more entertaining to everybody around Claude, and as somebody in the latter group, Linhardt would appreciate the entertainment.]

This last one we were strongly encouraged, [ said with a tone in which it's clear this wasn't so much an encouragement, ] to attend so as to not offend our hosts. The one before that was entirely mandatory. But there aren't that many Summoned here, Linhardt. There's new faces now and then, yes, but not so many that it'd be impossible to know them all when it comes to being able to tell if we were all gathered in one place.

[ And being here in Nocwich, such as they are now, means a chance to meet those new faces in the months in between when those 'encouraged' events had happened. Otherwise, they might've not been aware of each other until crossing paths in the Horizon. Or - more accurately, until Linhardt found Garreg Mach, noticeable as it is, and wandered in. ]

I don't think we have the luxury of being left out. Does Thorne give you the same spiel about being important and that they're glad you're here? I hear Solvunn reveres their Summoned as some kind of blessings from their gods. And make no mistake, the Free Cities considers us weapons.

[ That's their value to them, Claude's certain, and it's unfortunately familiar in so many ways. There's so many variables to exactly how much freedom they have which he constantly keeps an eye out for; in some ways it'd almost be easier to live under Thorne's restrictions since those, at least, are defined. But there's saying that and then living the reality of it, and he knows himself too well to know he couldn't stand it.

At the mention of someone else they know, however, there's the slightest rueful smile from Claude. ]

So your professor was also 'she' from the sound of it. Perhaps you're from Petra's time where the Teach you know sided with Edelgard rather than him being on my side.

[ A thought painful because Petra's no longer here, and because once again: not his Teach. Claude's honestly not sure if that makes it better or worse when it comes to these discussions anymore, but it's simple enough to change tracks once more back to lightness. ]

I'm sure Teach would appreciate your grading all the same, though, since he used to write me some pretty terse notes on work I'd handed in if you feel like channeling that. Most of what I've worked with others on here is healing magic, though, and interestingly it's able to transfer even without... well, anything from Fodlan being here but us.

That is disappointing news.

[It is difficult to disappear in small groups, and whenever a group is small enough that everyone knows each other, deviations from one's usual behavior are noticed. Linhardt makes a mental note to establish habits of changing his habits every so often - if he's too understandable, he might be approachable. Which might distract him from working on what he wants to work on.]

I would still rather know, however, so thank you. I am not certain: When I arrived in Thorne, High Mage Ambrose looked exhausted. So I tended to checking my condition and dismissed the mage settling me in as soon as possible. They are all clearly overworked and since I am capable of orienting myself, I did not see a reason to waste their time.

[He had, in his own way, been trying to be polite and courteous. Linhardt understands what it is like to have too much responsibility and not enough energy. He wonders when the last time Ambrose slept for 8 hours is. Thorne has not offended him personally; his natural instinct is empathy.]

I cannot think I would be in Thorne if they only saw the Summoned as weapons. Or they have incomplete or incorrect information on me and the rest of the Summoned.

[Linhardt is not the person from Adrestia they want if they wanted magical destruction. Dorothea would be the best option - Hubert enjoys destruction but he'd be too focused on Edelgard - even here. Dorothea is very pragmatic. And her ranged magic surpasses Linhardt's.]

Yes. Professor Byleth sided with Edelgard - I am unsurprised to hear that she decided otherwise in different Fodlans. Her position - or his - is not enviable. I am amazed she can trust anyone. I wouldn't in her position.

[Rhea had clearly been hiding something and was oddly obsessed with Byleth. On the other hand, Edelgard was working with people who murdered Byleth's father. Linhardt had been surprised when she'd reappeared: He thought she'd come to her senses and left Fodlan entirely.]

At least you turned your work in.

[Linhardt had not.]

It's not surprising. There have to be certain key physical aspects of the world that are the same between our home worlds and Abraxas. We're all more similar than different.

[ That information about Ambrose is - interesting, Claude decides, especially because he's not sure he's heard it before. It'd take some combing through his conversations with Kyle to remember if that's really the case or not, something he doesn't really have the time to do here and now when Linhardt's still telling him even more information.

Other important things, like dismissing the mage which absolutely gets an appreciative snort of laughter from him. ]

I wonder if they've ever had that happen before. By someone who know what they're doing, I mean, rather than someone completely undelighted to be in Thorne or Abraxas as the bigger picture. But while the Free Cities might consider us weapons in the traditional sense given that so many of the Summoned there have military backgrounds, I wouldn't count yourself out as a weapon of another kind. I'd daresay they know exactly what they were doing by bringing you through if they're looking for someone to tackle something complicated with magic.

[ A conjecture, but one Claude's willing to bet on since there's certainly reasons for them all to have been here. Something else he can share, though he glances back over his shoulder idly first when there's the sounds of others walking in. They don't stop at their part of the spring and keep walking on through to another part of the spa, so that's easier to turn back to Linhardt though for this he lowers his voice to prevent it from carrying. ]

The first Summoned brought here - everyone came to Thorne. Some of them were told they were 'mistakes' and imprisoned while the rest were treated as honored guests. Something happened where they were able to escape to the Free Cities or Solvunn or stay, and from there the other two places started bringing in their own Summoned since they gained access to the ritual. It stands to reason each place has only been refining their methods since.

[ Something he's talked about with others though the ritual itself is beyond his knowledge - for now. It's difficult to not think of Viktor and what he hopes to do from his research, experimenting, whatever else it is he's indirectly helping with by helping out on the business side of the workshop to let the scientist focus.

They can get into that in a minute or perhaps in the Horizon considering while the springs are private there's a limit to how much prevention can happen in the way of things not being overheard. For now he merely offers another rueful smile over the idea of Teach not trusting anyone - something else he completely understands. ]

Why am I not surprised you didn't turn your work in? Maybe you won't be surprised to hear then I mostly turned mine in when I wanted to prove Teach wrong about something. [ This, at least, is easier to joke about, a past habit from days as students stubborn in different and similar ways. Teach probably had his or her hands full no matter which house was involved, truthfully. ] I can't help but wonder how he - or she - would do here.

[ Which - ]

I suppose now's a good time to mention that Edelgard and Byleth were in Thorne sometime before I arrived. I don't have many details, but it sounds like there's a very good chance it was the two of them you knew rather than anyone from my timeline or even Sylvain's.

[Linhardt gives a small smile at Claude's laugh. Claude does not spend much time standing on ceremony. At least not with him: It is difficult to know which Claude is the true Claude. He is certain, however, that Claude shares his affinity for small acts that draw attention to the absurdity of the situations they find themselves in.]

I am uncertain. They seemed pleased enough by my presence, but the High Mage clearly needed some rest. If he is feeling that way, so are his people.

[The healer goes quiet, considering the information that Claude has just told him. Thorne had the Summoning ritual first. That means they know the most about it - or at least will have data going back the furthest in time. It also might be outdated. There are almost always trade-offs to information's availability. Also it would be wise to consider what Claude is telling him, even if Linhardt feels instinctively uncomfortable with being referred to as a weapon. Or the idea of being known at all rather than him being more easily accessible or less of a threat.

Thorne might be so hospitable because Linhardt is doing what they want him to do. He will need to test this by engaging in multiple research detours. Are they so kind if he focuses his attention on Abraxan construction techniques? Or if he wants to know what their sand is made of?]

Thank you for informing me. I will keep that in mind as I work.

[After confirmation. Trust but verify.]

Why would I turn work in? I didn't need to do the work and the Professor had other students to care more about. It wasn't worth anyone's time to care about what I was doing or not doing. Except for Edelgard, Ferdinand, and Hubert. They are nosy.

[As for how the Professor would do here...]

I think she would do well. Everybody likes her. I believe the biggest problem would be if she were here with her students. She is protective and we cause problems.

Hmm? Oh. I know. Do you know if Edelgard was sent home or if they killed her?

[He does like Edelgard. And respects her. Linhardt is simply also aware that Edelgard isn't likely to accept anyone's authority over her and she does not handle situations outside of her control well. She would have been plotting the moment she'd arrived. Like Linhardt assumes Claude is.]

It is hard to know: We know that there are different timelines, but not how many. We know that the Professor's decision of which class to lead creates differences, but there may be dozens of timelines within each decision. You and Hilda may be from different timelines and you might not know it. The differences might be in Sreng, or Brigid, or Almyra.

[ It's an ugly truth, that not only were they brought here against their wills but because those who brought them here hoped to use them for their own means, whatever those end up being. That Linhardt says he'll keep it in mind gets a brief lift of one corner of Claude's mouth in something which isn't a smile proper but is close enough when it comes to offering an acknowledgement of that. Hopefully it'll serve as a warning even for whatever Linhardt gets into since Claude's positive there's no shortage of potential puzzles, problems, and whatever else to solve.

That lift of his mouth rises a little higher, however, at the question about why Linhardt would've turned work in. Why indeed; it was a thought that'd crossed his own mind several times while writing up something about some strategy or another potential battle plan when he knew that Teach knew he knew what he was doing. Maybe for entertainment's sake since the blunt notes he received back were almost worth putting the effort into the work - or more realistically, it was just another way to keep prodding and testing. ]

Hubert being nosy. I couldn't possibly picture that.

[ Incredibly dryly, as if this wasn't something well-known when it came to Hubert needing to be involved in everything. Of course, this is also more or less holding a mirror up and examining his own expression. Whatever remark Claude was about to make about Ferdinand - yet another easy target for a joke - is forgotten as he stares at Linhardt for a moment, trying to figure out if he's serious. ]

I don't know of the nations here killing anyone. Not who was Summoned, anyway, but. [ Claude furrows his brow in a frown for a second, considering. ] In the same breath, I've never heard anything from anyone about the explanation of what happens when someone disappears. When Felix, Marianne, and Petra did, it was like... it was like they'd never been here at all.

[ There's no time to consider that for long since at the mention that he and Hilda could be from different timelines, Claude stills. That's a thought he's had before, but to hear it voiced so casually - well. It feels more foreboding, and upon realizing he's gone a bit too quiet he hums a tuneless note to signify he's thinking under the guise of resettling in the spring's water again. ]

I suppose you're right about both how many timelines there are and whether the changes are even in Fodlan. [ A heavy thought, but Claude continues on as if they're discussing the weather. ] Perhaps there's one where Faerghus doesn't claim part of Sreng, the Empire doesn't triumph over Brigid, and where the Alliance falls to Almyra. All of those are just as possible.

CF Lin has such complicated feelings about Edelgard

[personal profile] sleepfan 2023-08-13 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I could abide Hubert nosing around - he is a Vestra. They are like that. Asking him not to gather information would be like asking Caspar not to punch people. What made it intolerable is that he had to offer his opinions about my actions. I also do not appreciate the attempts to change my behavior while withholding from me the reasons for doing so.

[Linhardt has a sense of priorities and understands the necessity of the war. That doesn't mean that he isn't still bothered by a great deal of what happened at Garreg Mach, including Edelgard and Hubert's attempts to 'correct' him while they were planning to start a war. He doubts that was done because they were concerned about his scholastic performance.

Claude is staring. Linhardt tilts his head a few degrees to the right in a wordless question. He had been perfectly serious: Edelgard didn't deal well with challenges to her authority and neither did Thorne.]

That is interesting. Do you mean proof of their physical presence also vanished? Do you think they were removed from the Abraxan timeline completely? Do the natives remember them?

[It is easier to focus on the logistics of their situation than think too much more about Edelgard being here. It is true that she would not have handled it well. It is also true that she would have been frightened and possibly alone. Linhardt cannot shake the image of Edelgard in one of the beds of Thorne, trying to hug something in lieu of the bear the Professor had gotten her. She looks much smaller when she is hurt or sleeping.]

Precisely. We would need to know what causes a new timeline. If any decision causes a new timeline, the odds of any of us being from the exact same timeline are very small. If most things are predetermined and only people like the Professor can alter them, then there would be many fewer Fodlans.

It's even possible several of the Summoned are from the same world but do not know it because the histories are so different - would we know if Fodlan split from another timeline thousands of years ago? The names of everything would be different.

[ There's a tinge of sympathy for Linhardt having to deal with Hubert's... opinions. Claude remembers the comments well from the Academy days, ones he'd cheerfully rolled with purely for the purpose of annoying Hubert (and generally succeeding), but that's not near the level of what Linhardt would've had to deal with. It occurs to him - again - he could use this opportunity to ask what it was in precise terms Hubert knew about the Agarthans prior to his death and that letter meant to steer them towards Shambhala.

Well. It certainly seems they'll have a lot to chat about in the future, that's for sure. ]

Petra was here for longer and took quite a few jobs hunting monster bounties. The requestors we worked with - they remembered her. They didn't seem surprised when I told them she wasn't here anymore since it's far from the first time that's happened. There's Summoned in Cadens who've been here for almost two years now since I remember them telling me they'd been here for a year when I arrived last summer.

[ That answer's offered after a bit of solid consideration on Claude's part. No one's been able to explain to him what exactly happens when someone disappears - besides the so very clear indicators they simply aren't here any longer. ]

If I had to offer my best guess, it'd be that you - generally speaking for all Summoned as the 'you' here - tend to be more memorable the more you do and the longer you stick around wherever you're pulled through and whether you're known outside of that would depend.

[ This particular difficulty in information passing between nations' borders bothers Claude far less than the others; to say he trusts the other two governments - or even the one where he is - would be a stretch. No need to tempt fate with getting noticed by more than they had while in the Feywilds.

The implications of those timelines are more interesting to focus on, anyway, and yet again Claude shifts his mind to those with ease. ]

I know of a handful of Summoned I believe come from the same world, though the circumstances for each seem to be different. It's called Earth - something also far more modern than Fodlan. [ A second where he thinks of Julie's patient explanations to him not long after he'd arrived, to Steve's world and how it'd also had a world altering war, to where Kyle calls home. The same place, but as Linhardt says: very much not the same in what was lived. ] From what we've talked about while here, it seems the biggest chance in what each of us remembers from Fodlan depends on which house Teach chooses to lead. Hilda and I remember him being our professor with the Golden Deer, and Sylvain remembers her being his with the Lions, and then you remember her for the Eagles. That seems to be the main difference for events starting with school and the war, but like you said, if there was something so critical that occurred then surely our memories would differ even further.

That is a very Petra thing to focus on. Very practical.

[And while in the Academy Linhardt would have turned his nose up at this practicality, he more and more appreciates it. Petra knows what she wants and needs. She is accepting of herself and takes action to do what she needs without much pontificating. She is self-assured and can take care of herself. Linhardt doesn't need to worry about Petra.]

This situation only raises more questions, but I will need to investigate a number of other matters before we can address them. As of now, I do not know enough about the situation.

Modern in what way? You gave yourself away there, you know.

[It is as mild as any of Linhardt's other statements, and he continues on without explaining.]

I think the important thing to take from this is that we not make assumptions about what happened in each other's Fodlans after we started at Garreg Mach. Additionally, we should all compare our timelines. We need to see what is different and what is not - did the Professor's decision alter everything or do some events happen regardless?

However, our histories before we go to the Academy should match, because our timelines are all parented by the timeline where Professor Byleth assisted you, Edelgard, and Dimitri and where Rhea acted to take her - or him - into the school.

[There are further possibilities. It's possible the Summoned are mostly from the same planet. It's possible that planet is Abraxas. Linhardt's hand twitches under the water and the healer sighs.]

I am displeased I am unclothed right now.

[It means he does not have anything to write with or on.]

It was very rude to engage me in stimulating conversation somewhere I do not have a quill at hand.
