EVENT #19: OVERTHROW - WRAP-UP
Event #19 - Overthrow (Wrap-Up)
When tensions were last at their highest, Luna served as a neutral party to ease tensions before they resulted in open war. This time, there are no treaties and peace talks. Each territory is mobilizing to reinforce its borders, take advantage of vulnerabilities, and strengthen its position. Of course, that doesn't mean diplomacy is dead. Every conflict has its mediators. Letters are already exchanging hands, though progress is slow at best.
A summary has been provided at the end of this Wrap-Up to highlight important developments.
IKORR IS NOW OPEN.
Characters will be informed upon arriving in Nocwich that they can visit Ikorr through a portal in Oleuni Square during the usual Nocwich dates. It sits next to the portal that leads into Luna.

Ramifications
Characters who made a choice may not immediately realize the impact of their decision, but rest assured, they did make a difference. Solvunn's consequences will come during Event #20...but that doesn't mean things in Solvunn are quiet. Further, the Nether and Nocwich, while on the fringes, are not absent from the world stage.
◎ In THORNE, the immediate effect is subtle. Characters who attended the coronation may notice that their requests will generally be granted without delay, as long as it's reasonable: moderate spending money to visit Borrel or the surrounding castle city, borrowing a horse for periods longer than a day, and so forth. Characters who assisted Nott will be placed under more scrutiny. Guards may appear nearby on occasion. If characters submit a request - especially if travel or money is involved - approval might be delayed by a few days.
◎ In the FREE CITIES, characters who assisted either area will receive gratitude from the soldiers and people they saved. In the family compound, a few occupants of a collapsed corner in Block C tragically perished. Still, the rest of the compound was rescued. In the medical facility, a shortage of one or two extra hands means some wounded soldiers weren't moved to the east wing in time while others with more severe injuries succumbed before the equipment could be restored. A number survived thanks to the aid provided, but lives were nonetheless lost. Fortunately, the facility is now secured and stabilized.
◎ In SOLVUNN, the waters shared with Borrel become obscured by a protective storm following a costly ritual. The full effects will be detailed below.
A Higher Power Awakens
Having observed the dedication of the Solvunn Commune, the Old God called upon from the shrine in the Nether has imparted its instructions. On JULY 2, the Elders return with a piece of the shrine taken with permission and a representative from the Nether.
In the Tertiary Settlement, by the ocean, they begin the ritual. All may attend, including the Summoned. The site has been prepared using stone, driftwood, and leviathan bones in a large circle. Some familiar runes are intermixed with foreign script, creating a sigil the size of a house. Council Members Isar Hart and Rowan March stand at true east and west alongside any who wish to fill in the ranks between them. Winifred Bordeaux stands at the apex with the Elders behind her. They place the seashell offerings around Winifred who turns to the assembled.
Chanting begins as Winifred faces toward the sea. The tongue is foreign, led by the representative from the Nether. The tides withdraw, a great wave collecting in the distance. Winifred spreads her arms wide. The sand beneath her feet shifts and trembles, enveloping her up to her knees. High above, a formidable silhouette can be seen against the turbulent sky.
Then, in a blink, the massive wave that's been building up rushes forward to meet her. It stops at the edge of her feet as if awaiting a decision. Winifred looks up at the shadow above. Then, squaring her shoulders, she walks forward into the ocean's waiting hands. The wave collapses down upon her. Its embrace is almost gentle despite its imposing height as it carries her out to sea.
The others do not appear alarmed. The ritual continues until a spout of water shoots up in the distance, spinning into a wild cyclone. Then, with a clap of thunder, the cyclone expands into a massive wall of water that cuts straight across into the Hydra Gulf. Beyond the wall, a violent storm grows, rocking any ships that might try to cross from Borrel.
Hours later, Winifred washes up to the shore, exhausted but alive. She looks paled and withered. It's quickly apparent that she will not recover. Winifred and the Council appear to have known this from the start. She retires to a comfortable home to await her final days.
Her sacrifice is not in vain. The tempest rages with no end in sight - but only on the northern side, by Borrel of Thorne. On Solvunn's south side of the wall, the waters are calm and prime for fishing.

Retaliation on Castle Thorne
That the Free Cities would respond to Thorne's act of aggression is unavoidable. The question is, where? Although Nott's southern farmlands make an appealing target, an assault on Castle Thorne is a strong statement. The decision is heavily influenced by Reva Hym, now promoted to Captain. Working alongside generals and the Prime Minister, Reva suggests that after the successful rescue of the family compound, they ought to reinforce to their soldiers what they're fighting to protect. Further, they should honor the sacrifice of their wounded comrades, several of whom perished during the attack on the medical facility. The correct show of force would motivate the soldiers, ensuring they remember they're here for their families and preventing them from viewing the loss of their friends as meaningless.
On the night of JULY 3, a flock of birds take to the stormy skies. It seems the tempest in Borrel is beginning to spread eastward towards Nott and across the big lake. Rain is pouring and visibility is low. It's nearly impossible to notice anything unusual about these birds. As they draw closer, though, their features are mechanical in parts. Clutched in their talons are small round devices, each one containing a powerful core enhanced with a newly developed technology.
The birds fly across Lake Circinus. For a momentary period, it appears Nott is its destination. Then the birds continue northward toward Castle Thorne. Normally well-guarded, Castle Thorne relies heavily on its wards. Such wards can only be breached with equally strong magic, something the Free Cities lacked...until now. The new device has combined magic and technology in a way that Thorne could not predict. After all, it was not introduced by a native of Abraxas. Instead, the design of the spherical core was based on the confiscated notes of a particular Summoned inventor.
By the time a guard notices the birds, it's too late: the mechanical creatures release the spheres directly over the castle itself. The devices click and whirl. Upon impact, they unleash bright arcs of lightning seen from miles away. The explosion breaks through the city's defenses, shaking the ground and reaching the heart of the royal castle itself. More wards meet the impact with a bright flash. The deafening crack is heard across the city. The castle's windows shatter and parts of the walls crumble...but fortunately, most of it remains standing.
While casualties within the castle are limited to injuries from broken glass or falling debris, others outside are not so lucky. When the smoke clears, a portion of the garrison outside lay dead and Thorne's powerful war horses were also decimated. As more and more of the damage is surveyed, it becomes evident that Thorne has not only lost its horses and soldiers but its infrastructure has been disrupted: roads to Hayle have collapsed, preventing valuable supplies from reaching the isolated mountain city. Incapable of growing its own food, Hayle is reliant on shipments from Nott and Borrel.
As for the mechanical birds, all that's left are their twitching bodies. Functional components of the core have been thoroughly obliterated. The only thing anyone can find is burnt and twisted bits of metal that, when studied closely, have various signs of the Arcana etched into them.

A Final Blow to the Cities
Just like any navy, a kingdom is only as effective as its resources. Although the new King and Queen are by no means miserly, they both possess a sharp eye for excess and have relayed the following to their inner circle: because the majority of the Summoned chose to protect Nott, further resources planned for the lakeside town's security are not necessary at this time and are to be diverted. In addition, the lack of support from the Summoned indicates it is up to Thorne to secure its borders before the Free Cities can attack again, for it is quite clear that the Summoned's priorities don't lie with defending Castle Thorne.
When the Free Cities strikes the castle, this only solidifies the Crown's decision. Word travels quietly but quickly from the throne room and across the Badlands, all the way into the heart of Aquila.
Early morning, on JULY 5, Aquila's Treasury Cabinet holds its daily meeting to go over the city's funds, as well as Free Cities's overall budget. Led by Fallon Marsh, the cabinet consists of four others who are vital to running the territory's economy, including a wealthy trade merchant and a former General who once oversaw his battalion's spending. An upturned wagon, however, has delayed the fifth member, a bookkeeper by the name of Darras Vale. The meeting proceeds without him.
As Darras hurries down the street, scrolls and notes clutched to his chest, workers inside begin to stream out, pushing past him. Two soldiers catch up to him and begin to hurry him away into a waiting carriage, ignoring his protests.
Unlike previous crises, this one comes without any noise, smoke, or fire. Indeed, the skies are bright and sunny and other than the flow of evacuating employees, there's no sign that something's gone awry...until, as he stares and stares, he finally glimpses a splatter of blood against the side of an open window in the very meeting hall he'd have been in had the wagons not toppled.
"It's the cabinet," explains the soldier who joins him in the carriage. "I'm sorry."
Darras holds his papers tighter. "Th-the cabinet? What are you saying?"
"Fallon Marsh and the others. We're awaiting confirmation, but I'm told four bodies have been recovered. Perhaps a fifth unknown."

New Developments
Kingdom of Thorne
While the attack on Castle Thorne has thrown things somewhat into disarray, Thorne itself continues to run as smoothly as possible under the circumstances. The King's highly organized and structured planning means repairs are quickly set underway and there is no waste of time or expenditure to be seen.
Within the castle itself, there's a sense that Rudolph Sidwell has been planning this for a long time. He's gathered valuable supporters who were unhappy with the former queen's erratic behavior and the former king's inaction. Of course, not all agree - and plenty don't care either way.
As for the tome that holds the summoning spell? Although Ambrose Rhett managed to smuggle it out of the castle, his quick thinking can only help so far when his apprentice mage had the backing of King Sidwell and the favor of the (former) Queen. Mace Hemmet has successfully obtained a copy of the summoning spell for Castle Thorne...but he's missing the critical information contained in the book that helps determine who they should summon. Thorne's arrivals now run a higher risk of being ill-suited for the kingdom. The effect of this remains to be seen.

Open Travel in Thorne (Borrel & Surrounding Areas)
Starting in July, characters in Thorne can visit and stay in Borrel without restriction. Being from Borrel himself, the new King has no problems if the Summoned want to spend time in his home city, and will allow them to come and go as they please. For overnight stays, their accommodations are free. For longer stays, they'll need to pay. Characters are not formally encouraged nor permitted to permanently move residents, but there is much less oversight when it comes to Borrel. The Summoned may vacation for as long as a week or so.
Characters may get a job in Borrel (odd jobs, service jobs, and labor jobs at the docks are most freely available), enjoy swimming in the summer, and can go hunting in the nearby woods where wild game and the occasional beasts are found. Standard hunting weapons like crossbows are available to rent for a small fee. The further one goes out of Borrel towards Nott, the more dangerous the roads.
Visiting smaller villages or communities in areas near or between the cities of Nott, Borrel, and Castle Thorne is possible, including the lumber mill and Whitehill Village. These communities don't have portals so travel will require borrowing a horse and 1-3 days of riding. The new King and Queen are less concerned with where the Summoned go as long as they eventually report back to the castle. This means extended trips may draw some light questioning, but any trips under 1 week will go without remark. Characters who are known troublemakers may run into more restrictions.
In addition to Thorne's navy, Borrel has numerous coastal and seaside attractions including sea glass, beach festivals, and plenty of fresh seafood served with Thorne's typical high standard of dining. While the channel leading into the Hydra Gulf is disrupted by Solvunn's storm, weather along the western shoreline is unaffected and continues to be pleasantly sunny. You can read more about Borrel on the Settings page.

General Attitudes
Attitudes towards the new monarchy vary depending on who you talk to.
◎ The commonfolk, especially around Castle Thorne, are wary and uncertain. King Brydan was a genial man who liked to spend, throwing extravagant festivals and ensuring the people always had something to occupy themselves with. King Rudolph appears more severe and disinterested in flashy celebrations. On the other hand, they consider Queen Lia a promising replacement for Ellya, drawn in by Lia's warmer nature and willingness to listen to the townsfolk.
◎ The aristocracy are divided. Some believe that King Rudolph is a more stable ruler than the former Queen, whose attack on Libertas interfered with their trade routes and resulted in large amounts of spoiled or unsellable goods. Others are concerned that if he proceeds to incite war with the Free Cities, they'll be faced with the same problems they had under Ellya. Certainly, his most recent attack on the Free Cities Treasury Cabinet indicates war is coming.
◎ The castle staff are equally divided. Many of the guards and soldiers seem to vastly prefer Rudolph and Lia, appreciating the organized structure and stability they provide. Close members of the court also prefer that Rudolph and Lia have proper heirs, leaving the line of succession much less in doubt than before. Apprentice mages are less concerned about the King and Queen. Rather, they're more interested in the figure who has an immediate impact on them: the newly promoted High Mage, Mace Hemmet. Time will tell whether he stands up to Ambrose Rhett's achievements.
The Free Cities
In the Free Cities, the situation with Heartwood Syndrome is grave, but not as dire as initially thought - for civilians, at least. The majority of the infected are soldiers, particularly those by the Cadens outpost and barracks beyond the gates, the original targeted sites of the attack. While civilian casualties aren't zero, they're not as high as officials feared.
Of course, the situation remains grim in the Free Cities, militarily and for the families of those soldiers. The lack of direct civilian deaths doesn't mean they aren't affected. Further, several key figures have fallen victim to the attack described above, including Fallon Marsh.
Where a call to war is concerned, many believe that it's time to put Thorne in its place. This is the second time the Free Cities has been - in their eyes - unjustly attacked without provocation. After delivering the blow to Castle Thorne, Prime Minister Marlo Reiner has promised that when the Free Cities marches on Thorne, it will be towards victory. She asks for the patience of her people while Free Cities ensures the safety of its citizens first, cautioning that justice must be tempered with wisdom.

Changes in Aquila & Beyond
Aquila, the dominating economic stronghold of the Free Cities, is key to the nation. While the Free Cities is known for its technological advancements, scientific research, and military operations, none of these things would be possible without the careful management of resources and flow of money...all overseen by Fallon's sharp eyes.
His loss alone would be a terrible strike to the Free Cities, but the additional deaths of his supporting cabinet is crippling. Official reports state that while the investigation is ongoing, it appears that an infiltrator from Thorne unleashed a fatal spell that assassinated four members of the treasury cabinet, including Fallon Marsh. Only the delayed bookkeeper was spared by happenstance. The attacker's body has been found with the others, shot dead by an intervening guard.
With Aquila in disorder and Portam Hall struggling to manage the fallout of the infectious Heartwood, as well as civil unrest, the transition of power is rocky at best. Darras Vale, the cabinet's bookkeeper, finds himself in the position of Fallon Marsh's successor and Aquila's new representative. Taking over under these circumstances isn't easy, but he's determined. His first order of business will be to look after all those affected by Heartwood, family and victims alike - monetarily, of course. This includes increasing funding to support Fomalhaut and ensure the quarantined area is protected and given enough medical resources.
To prevent economic collapse, the Free Cities also lowered restrictions on trade and inspection, resulting in more accidents, bandit robberies, and other troubles that often befall traveling wagons. It's equally resulted in an influx of counterfeit and snake oil. Those buying medication or seeking high-quality potions or gems should be cautious. Since markets in the Free Cities are mostly unregulated, it's up to individuals to protect themselves.
Despite Portam Hall's best efforts, rising expenses plague the Free Cities. Bread and meat, raw materials like wood and iron, and cloth and spices are not only costly, they're occasionally impossible to find even if you had the money. In addition, non-essential funding has been cut as officials divert their resources towards rebuilding. In particular, the arts and tourism industry has lost all government support, leaving them to rely solely on private benefactors. Several festivals have been canceled, and a few theaters have shut their doors for good.

General Attitudes
Attitudes towards the situation in the Free Cities vary depending on who you talk to.
◎ The commonfolk throughout all three cities have primarily directed their anger at Thorne. Many also blame the government or the ruffians who attacked the compounds. While protests are not uncommon in the Free Cities, they now occur more frequently with gatherings outside Portam Hall or other institutions. Displeasure is expressed over everything from high food costs to the perceived weakness of the nation's military. Such protests can sometimes get out of hand, leading to arrests and injuries - but, as of yet, no deaths.
◎ The business class, including merchants, are divided. Those who provide goods valuable to the military or research have found their profits increasing as the government seeks to improve the Free Cities' defenses. However, those who own inns and other tourist attractions, clothing businesses, and theaters are losing money.
◎ The academics and artists are most worried about the potential of going to war. For them, the inevitable destruction of knowledge and history that comes with open conflict is disheartening. Some have taken a more impartial and practical approach, publishing papers and holding lectures on outcomes, resource management, traumatic wound care, and related studies.
◎ The soldiers are determined to defend their borders. Many are angry, intent on retribution. While the Free Cities has lost a chunk of its ranks, recruits are enlisting in the face of Thorne's attack. This number only increases after the successful strike against Castle Thorne. Rebuilding efforts are focused on outposts and barracks. There've also been additional promotions to fill the gaps left behind by those infected or killed. Active training and other movement can be spotted regularly throughout Cadens and in the northern mountains of Aquila.
Solvunn
Solvunn has steadily been showing its hand over the past year or so. The arrival of the Summoned has given them renewed faith and purpose in the ways of the Gods. Though Solvunn remains steeped in tradition, the Council believes that to hold onto those traditions, sacrifices must be made and circumstances must be adapted to.
With Thorne and the Free Cities causing the most disruption right now, they've preemptively made sure that the commune remains safe. This includes the well-being of the Singularity and the Gods. They fear a war or bloodshed could upset this delicate balance.
As a result, Solvunn has - for the first time - ventured outside of their commune to approach a shrine on foreign soil, to great effect. Winifred's sacrifice is only the beginning. The Summoned's decision to protect the waters, suggesting they consider Thorne the greatest threat, will influence what Solvunn does if war breaks out between Thorne and the Free Cities.

Honoring a Sacrifice
Winifred Bordeaux's willingness to give her life for the sake of the commune is an act not seen in Solvunn for centuries. In stark contrast to the rift that Josselyn Creed's betrayal caused, Winifred's devotion and unshakeable faith have brought the entire community together.
The Council believes that Argus, the Old God called upon from the shrine in the Nether, worked its power through Winifred to prevent its full strength from overwhelming the mortals who beseeched its protection. Those who recall being Gods themselves may understand the grim reality behind this decision. In doing so, Winifred's life force has been drained. She won't last long and has retreated into a deep slumber, but the community has gathered around her to ensure her last days bring her comfort and peace.
As a result, Solvunnites are traveling from all over the commune to visit one of their most devoted members. Edda Hagen, a longtime friend of Winifred and the Council, will help organize the preparations for her last rites and her journey with Vagn beyond. The Summoned may do so, as well. Though Winifred will not wake from her sleep nor respond, characters can speak to her if they wish. They may also help gather wood for her pyre, bring summer bouquets or other offerings, and provide home-cooked meals or sweet treats for her children, grandchildren, and other family members.
Tradition dictates that elections will be held after the 1-week mourning period. Out of respect, few are speaking openly of it until Winifred passes. General sentiments agree that Rowan March will likely take Winifred's place as Head of Council while Edda Hagen may take the empty seat left by Rowan. Though she is a transient member of the commune, Edda is well-liked by many, and her way with animals is particularly valuable as of late.
Four days after her act of sacrifice, Winifred will pass peacefully on JULY 6.

Though she is a transient member of the commune, Edda is well-liked by many, and her way with animals is particularly valuable as of late.
Four days after her act of sacrifice, Winifred will pass peacefully on JULY 6.
General Attitudes
Attitudes in Solvunn are more unified than in the other territories.
◎ The citizens in every settlement are saddened by the loss of their leader and a pinnacle member of the commune. Winifred taught many children in the Primary Settlement and was a strong leader who helped implement the Summoning ritual. However, they're also relieved and feel secure in the presence of a new deity who has sworn to protect them.
◎ The Elders are curious and hopeful about the emergence of an Old God in their territory not seen before now. They believe the strength of the community's faith has proven worthy of Argus. According to them, because Argus was dormant in the Nether for so long, they may be looking at a force that Thorne and the Free Cities cannot contend with.
◎ The children are largely preoccupied with the motions of ceremony. Those who were part of Winifred's schooling are more deeply affected, having grown close to her but the majority understand that she's done a great service for Solvunn and should be revered. They've made drawings and cards, and have picked flowers in her honor.
◎ The goats are back to normal. Some may headbutt anyone trying to corral them near boats, while others seem to stare piercingly at the Summoned who heeded their "knocks." The locals claim the goats are behaving perfectly fine and not to worry about it.
Summary
◎ Due to most of the Summoned forgoing the coronation for assisting Nott, the Crown has decided to divert resources that would've gone into increasing Nott's defenses. Instead, the Crown has turned its focus on further crippling the Free Cities by assassinating Fallon Marsh and other members of the Aquilan Treasury. Thorne's goal is to prevent the Free Cities from taking advantage of a newly established monarchy since the Summoned in Thorne have shown they aren't reliable when it comes to supporting and protecting the kingdom.
◎ Reva Hym, now promoted to Captain, advised the generals and the Prime Minister to target Castle Thorne, suggesting that the soldiers could use a strong win to ensure their morale stays high. Many are relieved that their families are safe, a momentum she believed was important to build upon. Indeed, the successful attack on Castle Thorne has helped increase the rate of enlistment.
◎ In Solvunn, Winifred Bordeaux willingly sacrificed herself to an Old God that has lain dormant for many centuries. A storm wall now divides the channel flowing into the Hydra Gulf. This storm prevents ships in Borrel from sailing into Solvunn's southern portion of the waters and reduces their ability to spy on the commune from across the waters.
◎ Thorne has relaxed its stance on traveling Summoned, who can now go to Borrel freely, as well as explore small villages in between the cities of Nott, Castle Thorne, and Borrel. Such trips need to be made on horseback and require "permission" to borrow the horses for a few days, but unless a character is a known troublemaker, it's unlikely permission will be denied. At most, it may be slightly delayed by a day or two if the Summoned in particular chose to support Nott over the coronation. Characters should return to the Castle within a week or so, but otherwise may explore.

Questions and Answers
If after reading these you're still unsure about anything, or your question wasn't covered, please feel free to hit up our Questions thread below!
- Will Ambrose be summoning new characters to Nott?
- While Ambrose escaped with the book, he won't have the mages and resources from the castle to perform the summoning spell by himself. It's unclear whether Ambrose would be interested even if he were capable. He's retreated into his lodgings and is rarely seen out and about in Nott.
- Is it possible to move to Nott or Borrel?
- For Borrel, not at the moment. For Nott, the possibility is there, but will require a Plot Engagement and may depend on circumstances. Generally, we would ask that a character has laid a logical road to leaving for Nott before submitting their request, including having built the appropriate CR, NPC connections, motivations, and resources.
- Does open travel in Thorne mean characters can temporarily leave the castle?
- Yes! Absences of over a week will raise questions, so please check in with us if you have a good reason for your character to be away for that long. However, short trips of a few days to the lumber mill, Borrel, and so forth will be fine. If your character wants to go camping for a weekend, they may do so.
- How much damage is there to the castle in Thorne?
- From the outside, the scorch marks and damage is visible. Side entrances might be blocked by debris. Inside the castle, the structure remains sturdy and mostly unaffected aside from windows that need repairing or the occasional shelf or portrait that hasn't been put back up.
- Were any civilians injured in the attack on the Aquilan Treasury Cabinet?
- No, this was a targeted attack meant to slow down the Free Cities government. No bystanders were hurt. Civilian bystanders impacted by Heartwood are also minimal. His primary targets have been soldiers and institutions of power, a decision made out of practicality, not ethics.
- Is Argus a dragon?
- Argus is an Old God whose form resembles a dragon. How others perceive Argus is their choice. Beliefs and myths surrounding Argus vary. It's been dormant for a long time. You can read a bit more about Argus on the Gods page.
- How long will the "storm wall" between Solvunn and Thorne last? Will the storm reach the shores in either direction?
- It will remain there for the foreseeable future! Currently, the storm is directly over the waters as a protective curtain rather than an offensive attack. It will not directly affect the shores of either Thorne or Solvunn for now.
- Why did the Nether agree to help Solvunn?
- Some of the Draconae have a close relationship with the Lunae of Nocwich, including Orion the Warden, and agreed to help after Luna nudged them to do so. As for Luna's motivations, Sten, a leader of Luna, has recently learned of a troubling vision of the future from a Summoned who spoke to him. He's subtly taking steps to secure the Lunae's relationship with Solvunn in case they need Solvunn's aid one day.
- How can characters help with cleanup efforts and repairs?
- Characters can proceed to do the usual volunteer tasks in regards to procuring or delivering medical supplies, aiding construction work, and so forth. More specific tasks and goals will be presented for July's set of Quests.
- Has a war broken out yet?
- Not quite yet, in the most traditional sense, but soldiers are certainly mobilizing in both territories. They must still contend with the troubles within their borders first, however.
