TEST DRIVE MEME #1

TEST DRIVE MEME
Welcome to the very first test drive meme for Abraxas! This meme is run a little bit differently than most in that you'll be asked to choose one of the two different arrival scenarios below for your character to take. If you have any questions about this mechanic or anything else related to the TDM, please take a look at the questions below or ask one of your own here. For general game questions please still use the FAQ.

Arrival

You awaken suspended in the abyss, silent darkness stretching out in all directions. If you try to yell, you'll find that the sound doesn't carry. If you try to move, you'll find it's impossible to tell whether or not you're actually getting anywhere. If you reach for an item you were carrying last time you remember being awake, your hand will only touch bare skin.

You're naked and floating helplessly through the void, and what little air you have in your lungs is running out.

There's a pinprick of light that almost looks like a faraway star but as it grows it becomes clear that it's actually quite close. Through the opening you can see a bright room, but it's hard to make out any individual objects, as if you're looking from beneath rippling water.

A hand plunges through and you realize water is just what it is. Whether you take hold of the hand or not it will grab you and yank you up through the surface, lifting you out until you're sprawled on solid ground. Once you catch your breath, you can get a better look at the surroundings: tall trees and even taller stone pillars surround the platform you're laying on. Behind you is an ornate fountain, the base of which is so deep and so dark you might be compelled to scramble away from it lest it suck you back in to that endless abyss. Ahead of you are the walls of a large castle with several tall towers reaching up towards the sky.

If you had any powers, they feel unusually weak. Attempts to use magic or enhanced strength or powers of any sort fizzle out without any effect, but they don't feel completely gone, either.

Set into an indent on a marble slab behind the fountain is a card baring the image of one of the arcana.

An apprentice mage - the one whose hand lifted you out of the fountain - brushes the water off on their robes and runs back to join a group of three others, who all stare intently at a mage with highly decorated robes and a large, heavy book. He peers up at you for a moment and starts flipping through the book.

"I beg your pardon," he says, so absorbed in the pages of the book that he doesn't bother to look up, "I am Ambrose Rhett, the High Mage of the Kingdom of Thorne. One of my apprentices will explain everything in a moment, but please refrain from yelling and thrashing about until then. You're quite alright, and screaming gives me a hell of a headache."

Regardless of your response, he keeps flipping through the heavy tome, until he stops on one specific page, stares at it for a moment, and then exclaims:

"Aha!"

Scenario One: Welcome to Thorne

Ambrose's expression brightens, eyes twinkling with delight. He waves one of the apprentices over with a fine silk tunic, pants, and some basic sandals and with a wave of his hand they reshape to fit you perfectly.

"Success! It's a success!" he exclaims, slamming the book shut and scurrying towards you.

Now that he's not hunching over the book, he doesn't seem quite so stuffy and inapproachable. The apprentices all seem quite relieved at his jovial outburst, and the one that handed you the tunic stops to take the tarot card down from the marble slab. If you show any curiosity about the card, they'll let you take a longer look, but won't let you touch it.

"Please, come with me, you're an honored guest here," he says, motioning for you to follow him towards the castle, "As promised, my pupils will explain your current situation. And, ah - if you had any magic of your own, or other special abilities you can't access right now, fear not, they'll return within the week. The summoning takes a lot out of you."

One of the apprentices steps forward and rattles on and on about the castle, Thorne itself, the names of a bunch of royals and nobles, and of course, your reason for being here. The Kingdom and the world itself is in great peril, and tales of your exploits have reached far and wide across universes. If asked about these exploits, the apprentice will simply smile and shrug. The High Mage was happy to see you and that's good enough.

Once inside the castle you're taken to the North Wing, which has been set up as living quarters for you and your fellow newcomers. There are four people to a room, but each generously-sized bed has opaque curtains that can be drawn around it. You can meet your roommates here and discuss your shared situation (everyone appears to have arrived within the last few days), or you can wander around and meet the others.

There's also a dining hall stocked with all sorts of fancy food to meet every possible dietary need, and a library filled with epic tales and legends and the history of Thorne. Given that this is the Thorne library, it may be a biased account that makes the Kingdom look a fair bit better than the rest of the world sees them. Last but not least, there's a study hall where a few junior mages (younger and less experienced than the apprentices from earlier) might be willing to teach you some simple elemental magic. Think holding a small flame in the palm of your hand, or blowing a door shut with a gust of wind.

You may also notice that your sign is embroidered on your tunic: the same image you saw on the card from before with the name of the sign itself beneath it. If you ask the castle residents, they'll tell you a little bit about your sign (and will mostly stick to the positives, although some might point out the negatives).

Last (and, if you ask anyone else in the castle, least) there is a worn stone staircase leading underground to the dungeon. You can go there, if you wish, but all powers are restricted in the dungeons and spending too much time with the prisoners will lead to some suspicion being cast upon you. If you ask anyone why the prisoners are being held there, you'll be told that they pose a great threat to the Kingdom (and, by extension, the entire world).

Scenario Two: Imprisoned

The High Mage scowls, grinding his teeth as he slams the book shut. "Another failure!" he barks at the apprentices, "You lot wouldn't know your ass from a hole in the ground, would you?"

All four of them lower their heads, and two of them mumble an apology that Ambrose either doesn't hear or refuses to acknowledge. "Well, don't just stand there," he says, waving a hand in the air, "We've put all this effort into getting this wretched creature, we may as well put it to good use."

One of the apprentices drops a baggy, rough-feeling tunic, a pair of pants, and some worn sandals in your lap and glares down at you until you put them on (if you refuse, they'll tell you they can kick you back down that well if you don't want to cooperate). They're glaring at the High Mage as much as they're glaring at you (when they're sure he isn't looking, anyway). You might catch one of them long enough to ask them why they're so upset with you, but all they'll say is that the High Mage knows something they don't, and he's awfully upset about it.

Once you're fully clothed, another apprentice clamps some heavy iron shackles around your wrists and leads you on. The High Mage is far ahead of you already, muttering some long string of Thornean curses before he stands up straight and pauses, spinning to face you.

"One more thing," he says, holding one hand in the air and chanting something under his breath, "Can't have you getting too troublesome."

If you had powers, the slight connection you still had to them slips away completely and you're left with nothing as the four apprentices drag you towards the castle. They may answer a few of your questions (with some insults and curses peppered in), but they won't tell you anything important.

Once you arrive at the castle you're brought to the dungeons and thrown into a locked cell. There are four people to a cell, and two sets of bunk beds with a thin and lumpy straw mattress. If you're over six feet tall, these beds are going to be awfully uncomfortable. You might as well meet your roommates. Once per day you're dragged out to an enclosed courtyard for one hour of recreation (with some crude weights, benches, and balls lying around but not much else), where you can meet the rest of the prisoners, but you can also talk to your immediate neighbors in the cells on either side and across the hallway. Just don't yell too much or the guards will snap at you to be quiet.

Everyone in the dungeon is fed one meal a day, and for a prison meal it's decent: a bit of meat, a bun, and a salad. It would seem that the Thornean chefs take too much pride in their craft to send bad food to the dungeons. The meals are all served in equal portions, though, so the smaller prisoners may be overfed and the larger ones may be getting hungry. Feel free to fight for food or share with your cellmates.

Crudely embroidered on the back of every prison tunic is the same image that was on your card and the name of the sign beneath it. A guard may explain a bit about the sign, and tell you some negative stereotypes they hold about yours.

You may be blessed with a visit from one of the more welcomed newcomers, and they may sneak you some extra food or a small book to read or they may share some of the information they've gathered. However, rumors travel fast and some people believe the honored guests in the castle above are somehow responsible for the lot of the prisoners below. And although you may hope for kindness, there's nothing stopping them from being cruel to you if they wish. The guards will certainly turn a blind eye if one of them wishes to take out their frustrations on you.

Questions

How do I choose a scenario for my character?
Pick whichever situation appeals to you most. Whether your character is honored or imprisoned has nothing to do with their personal morality, or how highly they regard themselves and their own accomplishments. Anyone can be put into either situation.

Can I try out both scenarios?
You can! But please keep in mind that only the one you eventually choose can be game canon, if you decide to keep any of your TDM threads.

What happens if my character refuses to comply with Ambrose?
Prisoners will be dragged against their will. Honored guests will be forgiven for their moment of panic or anger if they have one, and Ambrose and the apprentice mages will try to calm them and persuade them further. If they put up too much of a fight and/or start actively attacking anyone, Ambrose will warn them once that he's willing to put them back in the well where they came from (see below), and if they continue to fight he will make good on that promise.

My character intends on causing a lot of trouble (destroying parts of the castle, murdering the castle staff, etc.), what would happen to them?
Characters who make too much trouble for the mages and other staff would be thrown back in the well (which will mean drowning in the void, not returning home). Brawling with other PCs and causing minor damage is fine and will be greeted with a cranky attitude (if they are an honored guest) or a punishment like denial of food or temporary solitary confinement (if they are a prisoner), and there will be plenty of opportunity for destruction and murder later, but for now the Thorneans have no desire to keep huge liabilities around.

Ambrose will take it especially personally, as this experiment was his idea and too much trouble would risk the summoning spell being scrapped and potentially result in him being demoted. Rest assured it does not take much for him to throw someone back in the well at this point in time.

Is the power loss for the prisoners permanent?
No, although honored guests will regain their powers first due to the lack of interference from Ambrose, the prisoners will be able to regain theirs soon enough as well.

Can the prisoners talk about anything private, or will they be overheard at all times?
There are guards patrolling the dungeon, but they aren't always within earshot. Most of the attention is being focused on the new guests, so the prisoners will have some opportunities for privacy.

Can my character leave the castle?
For now they will be prevented from leaving the castle, even if they are an honored guest. A bit of a gilded cage, isn't it? They'll also find that any powers they regain cease to work outside of the castle walls (this is also a temporary effect) so flying outside is not an option.

Can my character eventually side against Thorne if I choose to make them an honored guest/can they side with Thorne if I choose to imprison them?
Yes, characters in Scenario 1 will be able to betray Thorne, and characters in Scenario 2 can work themselves into Thorne's good graces.

How much will my choice of scenario affect my character's plot later on?
This choice will have a major impact on gameplay throughout the first few months of the game, and potentially a bit beyond that depending on where our players guide the plot. This decision - and every other major decision you make in game! - will also be used to flavor some mod surprises that will be coming down the line.

Don't get too anxious about this choice, though; this is just one choice you'll get to make in a game that has a lot of them, and every character in both scenarios can work their way towards many, many individual goals and outcomes. You're not locking yourself out of anything in the future via the choice you made on the TDM. It will primarily impact the immediate future with the far-reaching effects being up to each player.

Are TDM threads mandatory for my application?
No, you may use other samples, but we encourage you to post to the TDM and get a feel for this game and its mechanics before you join. If you do not have a TDM thread you will still need to choose one of the two scenarios on your application.

What if I haven't settled on a sign yet?
You can ignore sign-related prompts if you're undecided (or try out different signs in different threads).

Can a put a character on the TDM if their canon is less than 30 days old?
Yes. For this app round, anything that's at least 30 days old when the game opens on June 12th can be applied from.

Do the apprentice mages have names?
Their names are Jeffrey, Grigory, Noelle, and Jolene.

Jon Snow | Game of Thrones | The Emperor (Welcomed)

[personal profile] song_of_ice 2021-05-23 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I. Roommates

[It's not as if he's antsy about sharing a room with someone. He'd done it at the Wall and with far less pleasant people. It's how quickly they were ushered to their rooms and without much explanation of how and why they were here. No matter the luxury, Jon feels uneasy and exhausted by this whole matter. He had other things to do and a greater threat waiting at home. Being pulled from that, fussed over and locked in a castle without much to satisfy his curiosity, it makes him restless and irritated.

Still, he does his best to stay occupied, otherwise he will want to lash out at something or someone. That wasn't fair. They were all prisoners here now.

In a fresh new tunic, emblazoned with something saying "The Emperor", he looks like he's suited for this world. Maybe it helps it is closer to his own, but that doesn't exactly make this any easier for him.]

Did you just arrive too? I don't suppose they told you anything?

II. Exploring

[There isn't much to see that appeals to him. The dining hall looks like any other from a keep, though less severe than Winterfell or Dragonstone. He can't find a training yard or a smith, which doesn't help his mood much. He's longing for Longclaw, some form of protection in this place that he's supposedly here to save. Even Ghost would be a comfort, more emotional support than actual strategy, but he might as well wish for a dragon or three.

So he wandered to the library, thinking of Sam and how much he'd love this place. He was never much of a reader, but he scanned the titles anyway, looking for something about home or even better, about this place. The histories and legends seemed scanted, the sort of thing that someone might read about Robert's Rebellion, set after Robert took the throne. He grumbled under his breath and put the book back.]

They don't give us much to do.

III. Visiting the Imprisoned

[Aware that others were being kept below, Jon followed the suit of the other welcomed by taking meals to the dungeon. He didn't have much of an appetite, and given what he remembered about these sorts of cells, he figured that they weren't allowed much appealing.

Though apparently that was wrong. Looking at some of the plates, it was no different than what they had in the dining hall. Still, some of the prisoners rejected it, likely not trusting anything given by people that were quick to summon them and lock them up.

He offered out the plate to someone who seemed unwilling to partake in their meals.]

You need to eat. Here, this is safe.

IV. Wildcard

[Susan looked down at the proffered plate, chewing on her lip. It might be wise to take it, she thought: food now didn't necessarily mean food later, and given the fighting she'd seen, food later didn't necessarily mean food for her later.]

[But there was a reason she hadn't eaten. She should be hungry, aye, perhaps: it had been some time since she'd had a proper meal. But she wasn't hungry. There was an emptiness in her, but it had nothing to do with food.]

[She looked up from the plate to the man offering it, and shook her head.]

Thankee-sai, but there's others here might want it more.

[And, underneath that, a suspicion. Never trust a man who offers something for nothing. That's advice she's never had cause to fault. Too many men won't tell you the price till it's paid.]

[That's why she doesn't try for a smile. A pretty girl smiling at a young man through prison bars... it tells a story, and it's not one, at this moment, she's all too keen on.]

[Instead, she points down the hallway.]

Sounded like a scuffle a few cells down. Could be there's someone there who ain't been able to get what's their due.

[Her gesture stayed with him. That sort of kindness to worry about others when she might be starving herself. It was the sort of regard that was rare in the world, especially among prisoners. Where others were fighting, she was thinking about the rest of the group. It was moving and made him all the more determined to give her the plate he held out.]

I have more to give to the others. This is yours.

[As it should be. He wasn't the sort to think about repayment or even be aware that he could be presenting an uncomfortable choice for her. He was more concerned with seeing her taken care of and there being few dead bodies in the basement, as the mages didn't seem concerned with that.]

They have their due, they just want more. Men tend to get aggressive when locked up without explanation or justice. They are just releasing it how they can and trying to show dominance. Think of wolves.
girl_at_the_window: (Packing you in like I said)

[personal profile] girl_at_the_window 2021-05-25 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[She looked him up and down, and her mouth quirked for a moment in a dry smile.]

I don't need to think of wolves, sai. I've met men.

[Maybe that was an insulting thing to say to a man, especially one so persistent in offering kindness. But it was also the truth. She'd never known wolves - or any other kind of beast - to be as vicious as men (and, for that matter, women) could be. It wasn't wolves that jeered, or hit their wives, or kicked poor Sheemie when he crawled on the taproom floor. It wasn't wolves that spat at her as she was dragged to her death.]

[She pushed the plate away, gently but firmly, and shook her head again.]

I ain't playing the martyr, sai. Ain't hungry, is all. [And not too keen to stoop to charity just yet, either.]
song_of_ice: ([Jon] Amused (Gazes Up))

[personal profile] song_of_ice 2021-05-27 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[That was fair. It earned a smile though, amused at how frankly she spoke of men. She wasn't wrong.]

Sai? What does that mean?

[The second refusal was enough for now. He still thought she should take it, if only to eat what she needed and trade the rest, but he wouldn't push her on the matter. She claimed that she wasn't hungry, so he'd give it to someone else further in.

For now, he set it on a nearby chair, assuming the guard wouldn't try to steal it.]

You will be. Prison leaves you with nothing to do.
girl_at_the_window: (pic#14924640)

[personal profile] girl_at_the_window 2021-05-27 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I ken what prison leaves you with. But if they're feeding us regular, then there's no sense hoarding. There's enough rats as it is.

[What does "sai" mean? She isn't as shocked by the question as she might be - after all, so far she's yet to meet a single person from her world, a single person who uses the language she's used to. They all talk strangely here - some stranger than others, but all strange nonetheless.]

[She wrinkles her nose, considering.]

Sai's... a politeness, I guess, is all. What we call people where I come from. So I'd be sai Delgado, and you'd be...?

[Hell, it's as good a way to get an introduction as any.]
song_of_ice: ([Jon] Not Interested)

[personal profile] song_of_ice 2021-05-28 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Sai Jon Snow? [He doesn't know if he is using that right. It didn't seem to be a title like "lord" or "lady" or "ser", but more of a sign of respect.] Call me Jon. [Which would probably be easiest.

He scanned the room for signs of the rats she mentioned. The only cell he had ever experienced was the ice cell he was locked in at the Wall. He heard enough stories of people locked up to understand what sort of condition they were kept in. It was strange though that there was enough food. It ran contrary to how they were treating the unwanted arrivals.]

I could bring you something else? A blanket or better clothes?
girl_at_the_window: (Restless as a willow in a storm)

[personal profile] girl_at_the_window 2021-05-28 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd be just sai Snow. But sure. You be Jon, and I'll be Susan. Does me fine.

[She half-smiled at his look around the room. There's no rats just now, to her relief - she didn't mind rats too much, but they were pretty hard to kick away in sandals. This whole thing would be marginally more bearable, she thought, with a decent pair of strong boots.]

[Just as she thought that, he spoke again, and how close his words came to her thoughts pulled a small, breathy little laugh out of her, despite herself.]

Ye're that determined to give me summat, Jon? 'Cause there's nothing I'm about to give 'ee in return. [Just so's we're clear.]
song_of_ice: ([Jon] Uhh)

[personal profile] song_of_ice 2021-06-02 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Susan. [He repeated the name with a small smile. It was pretty.] I never have been one for courtesies like that. It's better to be who I am.

[He understood her meaning and blanched a little, surprised that his offer had made her think he might want something more. He had to wonder then if that was why she was quick to push away the food or if she really meant what she said. He raised his hands defensively, shaking his head.]

My lady, I don't want anything from you. I'm- My heart belongs to someone else.

[He would never. Given how much persuading it took Ygritte to get him into bed and how long he waited before falling into one with Dany, he had good control of his desires.]
girl_at_the_window: (There's but one promise given)

[personal profile] girl_at_the_window 2021-06-04 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[She almost says that his heart isn't what she's worried about. Almost. She does at least have the decency to bite that back, a little ashamed at herself for just how cynical she's become.]

[Maybe it's that which leads to the slightly apologetic shrug she gives, the conciliatory tone of her voice.]

Say sorry, then, that I thought it of 'ee. A girl's got to be cautious, in a place like this.
song_of_ice: ([Jon] Noble Profile)

[personal profile] song_of_ice 2021-06-07 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I know. [That was the sad truth. There were enough rapists at the Wall where he was well aware of such things happening commonly to smallfolk. He didn't doubt that his assurances weren't enough. Words were wind, after all. Given where she was, she had a reason to be afraid.

He shook his head, wishing he knew what to say to reassure her or give her hope.]
I will do what I can to see you freed. None of you should be there.
girl_at_the_window: (Let me fly away with you)

[personal profile] girl_at_the_window 2021-06-07 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ye don't know that.

[She arches an eyebrow. There's something almost playful in it, now that she's made it clear that playful doesn't mean flirtatious - but there's something serious, too.]

For all 'ee ken of me, I might be a mad despot or a demon. So might anyone else down here.

What makes 'ee so sure we shouldn't be here?

[It's not something she'd say if she thought for a moment he was in for a chance of seeing them freed. But, as he's likely as helpless to change the situation as she is - short of charging the guards, anyroad - it doesn't seem too stupid a question.]

[ If Selene is bothered by the fact that she has roommates — some of which are men — it doesn't show on her face. Instead she remains seated at the edge of her bed, the curtains drawn back to reveal that it's just like any other in the room. Her back is straight and her hands are folded regally in front of her, still every inch a queen even after her death. ]

Yes, I have just arrived. But our hosts have spoken little about our... predicament.

[ She glances at the symbol on his tunic. ] Were you told what that means?
song_of_ice: ([Jon] Come On)

[She had a sort of exoticism that he might have seen from Braavos or elsewhere, but he was growing used to the idea that others were coming from different worlds. She was pretty to look at though and seemed to have some sort of noble air about her, as though she were born to royalty. There was always something different about such people and she seemed the sort of woman that Sansa might like.

That thought left him with a pain of regret. He was so close to returning home, now he was here again. Pity.]

No. [He looked down at the Emperor sign with a grunt of disapproval.] I honestly thought it was a jape of some kind.

[ Selene glances at her own sign before picking on a loose thread on her tunic. ]

A most strange way to categorize. [ Like they're being catalogued. She knows about that some, considering her husband's interests. Not that she says that out loud, because it might not be a welcome idea for others. To be prisoners even if they're dressed in... relative finery compared to those down in the dungeons.

Her cool — but not unkind — gaze settles on his face. It's the look of someone trying to figure out what he was, if he was a friend or a foe. His coloring seems to imply that he's from somewhere further north, though it's also not conclusive. She's heard of other places, other worlds, from the others who'd been brought here. ]

One of us thinks we were... summoned.
song_of_ice: ([Jon] Oh Shit)

[personal profile] song_of_ice 2021-05-28 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
That is what I gathered as well. [Which raised a number of questions, as well as brought him face to face with another form of magic he never imagined before. It wasn't resurrection, but it seemed just as impossible.] They seem to be looking for something specific. There are a number of new arrivals kept in the dungeon below. From what some of them have said, the mages were disappointed to see them.

[He gave a huff of frustration, pushing back his hair from his face. Coming out of the void had left him without a hair tie. He'd have to find something later, along with a way out of this castle.]

They won't tell us anything, no matter how often you ask.
moontwin: (♕ 01)

[personal profile] moontwin 2021-05-28 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ Selene purses her lips together at that. If the mages wanted her for the Shards, why hadn't any of it been summoned along with her? Although... of course, she didn't have any on her person during that moment. The Ark had been tucked safely away, the Palladium out of her reach, and the Aegis she'd ordered Pullo to transfer to Miriam. Even if it meant killing her in the process.

So if not for the Shard, what? That she'd been partly responsible for unleashing the demons in the first place? Is that the evil that's put Thorne in peril? ]

I do not know about you, but all I have done is die. [ She was also a queen, but she doesn't find it important to mention. Or that she'd fought against creatures that until their appearance were only myths, stories. ] And perhaps, make mistakes that have doomed my world.

[ Her own hair's in a haphazard braid, as she's been left without a means for fancy stylings. ]
song_of_ice: ([Jon] Amused (Gazes Up))

[personal profile] song_of_ice 2021-06-02 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's such a frank comment that he has to laugh. Death was always at the back of his mind, accompanied by a number of questions that he doubted would be answered. Hearing someone else speak about it, having experienced it, it was so unexpected that he felt a bit giddy at hearing it. He's smiling, a rarity for him normally, though after Daenerys, it seemed to happen more.

This at least eased some of his nerves, given how little they were told.]

Only the once, but there might be another waiting for me soon. I won't have a Red Witch this time to bring me back. [He just hoped it was a good death, protecting those he cared about. Strange though, he wanted to live and experience life...or had, thinking there was a future with Daenerys. From her reaction to seeing him here though, he couldn't be sure.] I have my fair share of those mistakes, but I hope my world isn't doomed.

What have you done?
