TEST DRIVE MEME #8

TEST DRIVE MEME

Welcome to the eighth test drive meme for Abraxas! This meme is run a little bit differently than most in that you'll be asked to choose one of the three different arrival scenarios below for your character to take. If you have any questions about this mechanic or anything else related to the TDM, please take a look at the questions below or ask one of your own under the Questions header below. For general game questions please still use the FAQ.

Our Setting pages are full of information on the world of Abraxas, and an overview of the story so far can be found on our Game History page! Anything on that page - including information about the Horizon and the Singularity - can be assumed to be told to newcomers after they arrive, no matter which faction they are received in. For more information on Ambrose and the apprentice mages, Marlo, and Rowan, please see our NPCs page.

You can also find answers to questions asked on previous TDMs in their respective questions threads.

NOTED CURRENT EVENTS

◎ Rumor has it that two emissaries - a werewolf and a vampire - visited from Nocwich in early July. With them came some wares distributed to shops throughout each faction. A few sparse items may remain for purchase, such as glowing flowers or fine ales, but much of it has now been sold.

◎ New arrivals in THE FREE CITIES may hear a bit of chatter around Cadens about art, politics, and recent performances involving its sister city, Libertas. It's all standard fare - the kind of topics spoken about over a beer or in line at the market - but there's a small stir in the air.

◎ Lately, locals in SOLVUNN have begun to approach the Summoned with a sort of awe and respect. New arrivals will find themselves treated much the same way and may be asked for advice or given gifts that seem like offerings such as wine, harvest bounties, or some delicious goat cheese. Your character is free to turn these down and should they turn down enough people, they will not be bothered further as no one wishes to offend them.

Arrival

You awaken suspended in the abyss, silent darkness stretching out in all directions. If you try to yell, you'll find that the sound doesn't carry. If you try to move, you'll find it's impossible to tell whether or not you're actually getting anywhere. If you reach for an item you were carrying last time you remember being awake, your hand will only touch bare skin.

You're naked and floating helplessly through the void, and what little air you have in your lungs is running out.

There's a pinprick of light that almost looks like a faraway star but as it grows it becomes clear that it's actually quite close. Through the opening you can see a bright room, but it's hard to make out any individual objects, as if you're looking from beneath rippling water.

Scenario One: Welcome to Thorne

A hand plunges through and you realize water is just what it is. Whether you take hold of the hand or not it will grab you and yank you up through the surface, lifting you out until you're sprawled on solid ground. Once you catch your breath, you can get a better look at the surroundings: tall trees and even taller stone pillars surround the platform you're laying on. Behind you is an ornate fountain, the base of which is so deep and so dark you might be compelled to scramble away from it lest it suck you back in to that endless abyss. Ahead of you are the walls of a large castle with several tall towers reaching up towards the sky.

If you had any powers, they feel unusually weak. Attempts to use magic or enhanced strength or powers of any sort fizzle out without any effect, but they don't feel completely gone, either.

Set into an indent on a marble slab behind the fountain is a card bearing the image of one of the arcana.

An apprentice mage - the one whose hand lifted you out of the fountain - brushes the water off on their robes and runs back to join a group of three others, who all stare intently at a mage with highly decorated robes and a large, heavy book. He peers up at you for a moment and starts flipping through the book.

"One moment," he says, not bothering to look up from the tome. He looks tired. "I am Ambrose Rhett, the High Mage of the Kingdom of Thorne. We’ll explain everything in a moment, but for now, please calm down. You’re completely fine."

Regardless of your response, he keeps flipping through the pages, until he stops on one specific passage, stares at it for a moment, and then sighs with relief:

"Finally!"

Ambrose's expression brightens, relief visible across his features. He waves one of the apprentices over with a fine silk tunic, pants, and some basic sandals and with a wave of his hand they reshape to fit you perfectly.

"Oh, thank heavens," he says, closing the book and approaching you with a sort of worn-out relief. “I was beginning to believe we’d never get it exactly right.”

Now that he's not hunching over the book, he doesn't seem quite so stuffy and inapproachable. The apprentices all seem to visibly relax, and the one that handed you the tunic stops to take the tarot card down from the marble slab. If you show any curiosity about the card, they'll let you take a longer look, but won't let you touch it.

"Please, come with me," he says, motioning for you to follow him towards the castle. "As promised, my pupils will explain your current situation. And, ah - if you had any magic of your own, or other special abilities you can't access right now, fear not, they'll return within the week. The summoning takes a lot out of you."

One of the apprentices steps forward and rattles on and on about the castle, Thorne itself, the names of a bunch of royals and nobles, and of course, your reason for being here. The Kingdom and the world itself is in great peril, and tales of your exploits have reached far and wide across universes. If asked about these exploits, the apprentice will simply smile and shrug. The High Mage was happy to see you and that's good enough.

Once inside the castle you're taken to the North Wing, which has been set up as living quarters for you and your fellow newcomers. There are four people to a room, but each generously-sized bed has opaque curtains that can be drawn around it. You can meet your roommates here and discuss your shared situation (those who were previously brought in may have a great deal of information to tell you), or you can wander around and meet the others.

There's also a dining hall stocked with a rotating 24/7 buffet in celebration of the new honored guests. Somehow, your very favorite food is part of the rotation (or at least an attempted recreation of it given the limited technology available to the Thorneans). The town surrounding the castle is all abuzz as well, with most shops and services willing to give free samples of their wares to the new arrivals.

You may also notice that your sign is embroidered on your tunic: the same image you saw on the card from before with the name of the sign itself beneath it. If you ask the castle residents, they'll tell you a little bit about your sign (and will mostly stick to the positives, although some might point out the negatives).

Last (and, if you ask anyone else in the castle, least) there is a worn stone staircase leading underground to the dungeon. You can go there, if you wish, but all powers are restricted in the dungeons and most of the cells stand empty.

Scenario Two: Welcome to the Free Cities

You find yourself pulled from the water by a pair of strong hands. Dry warmth hits you at once as you're set on a warm hard floor. As your senses return you realize you're on dull ruddy stone and surrounded by strangers. Men and women in unfamiliar uniforms of brown and red leather stand in a semi-circle around a small pool of water. The very pool you were just pulled from. The water is still now, rimmed in pale gold tiles with odd symbols etched into them. Across it on the far side is a raised pedestal with a card propped on it. The card bears an arcana symbol.

You feel weak. Drained. Any abilities or magical powers you have seem far away and impossible to access. You're in what looks like a cave lit by dozens and dozens of torches set into the wall. There's no furniture or decoration to be seen besides the pool. It's almost uncomfortably warm and there's the sound of rushing wind somewhere in the distance. Flickering shadows obscure the faces of the guards. A robed woman stands off to the side, looking at you anxiously and then to the authoritative woman standing before you. She's grinning, dressed in a fancier uniform than the others. There's a sword at her hip. A guard covers you with a blanket and returns to their place in the semi-circle.

The woman with the sword gives a nod of approval and smiles warmly.

"Sorry about the circumstances."

She gives you a good hard look before standing again.

"Take a minute, catch your breath, you've had quite a shock. Take it nice and easy. I'm Prime Minister Marlo Reiner and you're in The Free Cities. That nice lady over there will explain everything to you and get you settled." A nod to the robed woman off to the side.

Marlo Reiner steps back and the robed mage approaches to help you up.

"Come with me, please." She brings you out of the cave through a corridor that angles upwards until you emerge in what looks like some kind of storage facility. Shelves of wooden boxes and cloth bags line them, unidentifiable parts of what might be machines are tucked into corners and propped against shelving units. "This is one of the Free Cities' outposts," the mage explains as she leads you. "We're honored to have you with us, I'm sure you have many questions but please save them. You need to recover!"

You'll learn you're in the Cadens Desert Outpost 003, a military outpost on the outskirts of Cadens city. You're brought to a room in the barracks that's been prepared. Each barracks room is rather sparse and utilitarian. Six simple beds set against the wall, three on each side of the room, each with a trunk at the foot of it. You're told the world is in a delicate and dangerous times and you're needed to help. You're important, you're told, and they're very grateful you're here.

You're asked to stay close for the time being, but to make yourself at home. The outpost is more a proper military base than the name implies, with full facilities. The barracks have a communal bathing room at the end of the hall, with curtains that can be pulled around the individual raised round tubs for privacy. There's a mess hall that has food available from sun up till a few hours after sundown. You're even encouraged to make use of the training grounds, if you'd like, with non-lethal training weapons available for use and obstacle courses set up. And the city of Cadens is only a couple of hours away by wagon - though you're asked initially to please be back at the outpost within a few hours of the sun going down.

For your own safety.

Scenario Three: Welcome to Solvunn

The feeling of floating is the first sense that comes to you as the edges of unconsciousness start to ebb. Sunlight filters through the rippling water as you open your eyes, making you squint. Before you have the chance to panic and inhale, firm hands grasp your arms and pull you to the surface of the water. Moments later, soft warmth is wrapped around your shoulders as you're guided on unsteady legs out of a pool of water. You're lowered to the soft grass. Men and women in simple garments with lavish embroidery stand by, waiting with bated breath, glancing seriously at an old man in an ornate robe. He holds an old leather-bound book in one hand and in the other is a card bearing an arcana symbol. His eyes move quickly over the page, and he mumbles idly to himself.

Any strength you may have possessed feels as though it has slipped through your fingers. Any abilities or magical powers you have don't come to the surface no matter how hard you try. You're in a grassy clearing in the midst of a circle of large stone slabs stacked to look like doorways. In the middle is the same glimmering pool you were just pulled from. A gentle breeze blows through, carrying the scent of flowers and herbs from an ornately decorated altar set off in front of one of the stone doorways. The mage closes his book and steps out of the water, addressing a matronly old woman. Behind her are two younger people, a rough-looking man, and a meek young girl, both of whom are also watching the mage.

“I detect no ill will from the gods, it seems we've been blessed with success.” Those that had gathered all breathe a sigh of relief and now seem pleased.

The old woman smiles and steps forward, offering to take your hands and help you stand. “Any gift the gods give us is one we will happily take. I'm certain you have many questions, and they will all be answered in time. For now, rest and know you will be taken care of.”

She pats the top of your hand and steps away with a serene smile, letting one of the others come forward with some clothes that seem to fit you perfectly. Once you're dressed, someone approaches to drape a delicate-looking charm depicting a long-horned creature with large wings on a thin chain over your neck. Ask around later, and you may find that it is a symbol of Vielehauffe, the God of the Herd.

The rough-looking man from before steps forward once you're decent and motions with his head outside of the stone circle. His speech is informal, his consonants harsh.

“Hold your horses, I can see all those questions coming about! Rowan March, at your service. I'm one of the council members of Solvunn. There's a lot to discuss, but it's best talked about over a hot meal.” He leads you to a horse-drawn carriage and helps you up into the back. He talks the entire ride to the settlement.

You find out you are in the Primary Settlement, the first of three that make up Solvunn's great territory. The settlement is situated between two lakes and is humming with life. You're brought to the center of town and escorted to an apartment above one of the establishments in town. Rowan explains that the living conditions are temporary if you'd like them to be, that local families would also be happy to host you in their home. That there are others like you who have also taken up residence within the three settlements. You're told that the world hangs upon the brink of disaster and that there are those in this world that are happy to see it fall to ruin with their meddling.

You're important. The gods have graced them with your presence. They're delighted you're here. Welcome to Solvunn.

Everything you need has been provided in this humble apartment, and if it hasn't, there are shops that line the streets and a marketplace in the center of town. Owners of some establishments or stalls are more than happy to give out samples or barter with your time for their goods. Babysitting can be a very lucrative business. You're told of the other settlements, that they'd like you to stay here for now, but if you can find a family to host you, the secondary and tertiary settlements are best to get to with an escort.

There are tales of travelers visiting the secondary settlement without invitation disappearing without a trace. The gods are as hungry as they are protective, young traveler.

You’ll find that there are more than enough activities to throw yourself into to better settle into your new life in Solvunn. Work is done in the first part of the day so that families can spend the rest of it together in leisure and work on their crafts - whatever those may be. For those children who are not of school age, they need nannies or storytellers, and there’s always a gaggle of them running about unsupervised. Families with livestock can always take a spare hand, especially since farms are so spread out, they have a tendency to wander. Whatever skills you may possess can always be of use to the community or to honor the gods.

If any of these options are no good for your lifestyle, the main roads between settlements can always use a bit of monster clean-up… just make sure you don’t go alone.

Questions

How many slots are open?
Please check the Taken page for how many player, franchise, and canon slots are available. Activity check will be processed before applications open, so the count may change between now and then. Existing players can apply for a second character without restriction.

How do I choose a scenario for my character?
Pick whichever situation appeals to you most. Which faction your character is drawn into has nothing to do with their personal morality, beliefs, or how highly they regard themselves and their own accomplishments. Anyone can be put into any one of the situations.

Can I try out more than one scenario?
You can! But please keep in mind that only the one you eventually choose can be game canon, if you decide to keep any of your TDM threads.

What happens if my character refuses to comply with the NPCs?
They will be forgiven for their moment of panic or anger if they have one, and the faction leaders will try to calm them and persuade them further. If they put up too much of a fight and/or start actively attacking anyone, they will be warned once that everyone is willing to put them back in the well where they came from (see below), and if they continue to fight they will make good on that promise.

My character intends on causing a lot of trouble (destroying parts of the cities, murdering the NPCs, etc.), what would happen to them?
Characters who make too much trouble for the mages and other NPCs would be thrown back in the well (which will mean drowning in the void, not returning home). Brawling with other PCs and causing minor damage is fine and will be greeted with a cranky attitude and intervention from various NPC guards, and there will be plenty of opportunity for destruction and murder later, but for now the Abraxans have no desire to keep huge liabilities around.

I want to wildcard a prompt or use one of the prompts from an earlier TDM that isn't on this one (eg. the library), can I do that?
Yes, in terms of the settings. As Thorne is no longer imprisoning any newcomers, that option is no longer applicable.

Is the power loss for characters permanent?
No, but it does take a week or so for their powers to be back in full, and certain powers (determined on a case-by-case basis) may require nerfs. If your character has world-breaking powers, please discuss with the mods what modifications may be necessary.

Can my character leave the bounds of the faction?
In Thorne, characters can leave the castle but not the city. In Cadens, they can take a trip from the outpost to the city. In Solvunn, they can explore the entirety of the Primary Settlement.

Can my character eventually change factions?
Yes. While the faction borders are currently closed, there will opportunities in the future for characters to relocate. For the time being, they are stuck where they are.

How much will my choice of scenario affect my character's plot later on?
This choice will determine where your character initially lives as well as the bias of the information they receive from NPCs (although other PCs can and most likely will give it to them a bit more straight). This decision - and every other major decision you make in game! - will also be used to flavor some mod surprises that will be coming down the line.

Don't get too anxious about this choice, though; this is just one choice you'll get to make in a game that has a lot of them, and every character in every scenario can work their way towards many, many individual goals and outcomes. You're not locking yourself out of anything in the future via the choice you made on the TDM. It will primarily impact the immediate future with the far-reaching effects being up to each player.

Are TDM threads mandatory for my application?
No, you may use other samples, but we encourage you to post to the TDM and get a feel for this game and its mechanics before you join. If you do not have a TDM thread you will still need to choose one of the three scenarios on your application.

What if I haven't settled on a sign yet?
You can ignore sign-related prompts if you're undecided (or try out different signs in different threads).

Can my character go to the Horizon?
First time visitors to the Horizon must be taken there by other characters, through either shared meditation or a physical journey to the Singularity, and all first-timers experience memory loss. For the purposes of the TDM, we suggest against using the Horizon.

What about making use of the network?
Much like Horizon they would need to be introduced to it by another PC, as no NPCs would be aware of the network or be able to access it. Because of this we would advise against using this mechanic for TDM top-levels.

Istredd | The Witcher (show) | High Priestess | Thorne

[personal profile] magicalarchaeologist 2022-07-24 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
ARRIVAL

One minute Istredd is being held by the elves, uncertain where his future may take him but certain of his choice, and the next he is surrounded by water. It doesn't seem impossible the two are connected, but when he is pulled out, he realizes quickly he is not where he belongs. Weakly but curiously, he glances up and around, the trees and stole pillars unknown, but there is no answer he can come up with to where he is. It is not an kingdom he knows of.

The absence of his magic is felt and an ache that is startling, and by instinct, he looks at the man in charge, and is reminded of Stregobor. Istredd shakly gets to his feet, reassured by the statement about his magic, although not entirely buying into anything a stranger has to say quite yet.

As he is walked aside, answers and explanations given on the side, Istredd asks what questions he can with an intense focus. Protesting once that he was in the midst of a discovery, it matters naught, so the truth is accepted quicker than most: this is his reality. For now.

Around the Castle

This location is not ultimately that strange to him, it does remind him of home. They have a different type of grandness, more somber much of the time, but he may as well be back in his tutelage. At first Istredd sits at the bed given to him, musing quietly, curling his thoughts around next steps and what this may mean for his goals back home. He glances up when someone comes in, hesitating only a moment before he smiles thinly and nods his head. "Please feel free to come in, I am still adjusting."

There may be times you see him in the corner of the housing area with a book, fully engrossed in it, barely looking up for what seems like hours. This at least is what he does best. He is a tall man with brown skin and vivid striking blue eyes, the High Priestess symbol on his shirt and a quiet studious air around him. He does not seem disturbed by the situation.

Istredd soon is wandering the palace, learning the layout and the locations of important places. While he seems content to search on his own, peeking his head into every door that he is allowed, if he spots someone else he will nod politely before speaking. "This castle is beautiful, strange as the situation may be." He was not back home for long before running off to his books and dust again, he forgot how soothing it can be.

He does eventually end up at the dining hall and sits a fair distance from others, not out of disrespect, but because he's focused on yet another new book, frowning as he turns the pages. If someone were to join him, Istredd would shut it and glance up, willing to spare some time for another one of the Summoned. He barely looks like he touched his food, another problem when he gets wrapped up in his reading.

"What have you heard about the Singularity?" He asks after a few days, his blue eyes bright. While he may seem quiet, Istredd really is not when it comes to subjects he's interested in, and this seems well worth the interest.

You may find him a few days in testing out his magic, straining in the start and looking dismayed, but then after another few days, a ripple of magical power comes from his hand and knocks a vase that starts to wobble and looks like it could crash. Istredd hurries and manages to catch it just in time before it hits the floor, looking sheepish.

I came here from a time of war. Endless war, it sometimes seemed.

[He hopes still that Richard the Lionheart took his words to heart and that he and Saladin will not ceaselessly spend their men's lives against one another. But it is not his war, and he cannot make their choices for them.]

I have seen what it does to the people. Worse, I've seen what happens when warmakers treat the citizens as irrelevant, or even fuel for their conflict. I have no wish to take part in such a thing here.

"Yep". The single-word answer is punctuated by a lopsided grin. Is Star-Lord an embarrassing and objectively terrible moniker? Yes. Is it compounded by the fact that he gave it to himself? Also yes. Is Peter aware of that fact? No, he is not. "—Okay, so it's more of a — title than a name," he adds with a vague wave of a hand, the addendum meant more as a means of clarification than the fleeting expression of mild self-awareness it could be taken for.

"I haven't been back to Earth in—" he continues, quickly moving on from the 'Star-Lord' thing — it is a cool name, and he's not going to give anyone chance to get a word in edgeways to argue the point, okay — and circling back around to her Earth remark. He splays his hands, shrugging. "A while." It's uttered with an easy, smooth acceptance, insinuating that the concept of leaving Earth isn't odd, strange, weird or unusual for him. "I don't think it's a place that makes as much sense as we all like to make out."

Breath of a pause.

"Have you guys still got those superheroes running around in pyjamas? That's really weird."

[ it takes everything in him not to raise his voice, but frank keeps it steady, albeit a touch more serious as he answers, ]

I fought my war, Murdock. This one ain't mine.

[ matt knows enough about his history that frank knows he doesn't need to explain that further, especially when the man across the table from him doesn't know a thing about being sent off as a soldier. putting on some armored pjs and running around on the familiar blocks of new york city is nowhere near close.

and even then, even without that war, he's constantly fighting another one of his own.

he leans forward against the table, voice low and private. ]

Look, I couldn't give a shit what you do here. Find yourself a little suit-and-tie and play good boy lawyer or go smacking people up with a stick — I don't care. Just don't expect me to team up with you in fighting for this place. First chance I get, I'm gone.

[ His gaze is sharp on the stranger's hands. How could it be complicated? ]

If you say so.

[ He feigns disinterest with a puzzled half-shrug, his focus shifting back to his plate and the tiny pieces he's carefully dissected.

A vague, non-answer is still a kind of answer, and he has no reason to push the conversation. He brings his fork to his mouth, chewing on the tiny cut of roast chicken. The taste of some unfamiliar mix of herbs distracts him as he chews. He waits until he's swallowed before speaking up again. ]

Any advice you can give a guy on his first day here?

Istredd is learning the pathways and rooms available to them in the palace as well. It is grander than what he is used to, more like the royal courts the sorceresses would be sent to, but it is still familiar. He knows many others here have never been in a castle before. He is on his way to the library, his favorite place in any world or city he ends up in, when he swears he hears Cintra, although it was said so quietly.

Frowning, he turns on his heel and goes looking, nearly running into Pavetta when turning a corner. Istredd immediately skids to a stop. "Apologies," he murmurs, having been able to stop just in time. He is a tall man at 6'3 with light brown skin and vivid blue eyes. She is the only person within his sightline, so unless he was hearing things, this may be his only source.

"Did I overhear you say Cintra? There is a kingdom called that where I am from." It could be a coincidence or he misheard her, but perhaps Istredd is looking for connections to others, whatever they could be.

In my experience, people who are looking to conscript you without telling you the truth about why? Are probably not people you want to be allied with.

[ And he's about had it with sketchy, secretive organizations trying to manipulate everything from behind the scenes. It didn't end well for anyone. Least of all those they were trying to use as their pawns.

Buuuuut those are his weird issues. He'll be the first to admit he could be a little biased here. He shoots her a rueful grin that doesn't quite reach his eyes, but he makes an attempt all the same. ]

He stands so quick that she flows into a defensive stance without so much as a second thought. From that alone, she cannot glean a fighting style immediately – it's not the squat stance of the earthbenders that he takes, for instance. Won't make a difference, though, were he to have full command over his bending or a few hidden weapons at his disposal. Her hair falls into her face as she waits for the attack: she should have chopped off even more.

In the end, all she gets is sarcasm. It's not quite enough to take the tension out of her.

"Becca's lab. I made it back in time."

They'd taken off successfully, she knew that much. But there was no way of knowing if the giant radiation wave had interfered despite their best efforts, or if there'd actually been enough power for them by the time they got up there. She'd climbed a tower, pushed some buttons, and tried not to die.

"I got the transmitter signal working, so you should've had power assuming you made it to the Ark."

They had to have made it. Right? The gods of this place wouldn't have told anyone to save her and John Murphy before so many others who actually deserved another chance.

[ Istredd is an academic first and foremost so while he has learned the castle's layout well, he still usually ends up in the library, pouring through the books that they allow to newcomers. He has even ended up sleeping in there one night, just like old times, but he is someone who has read the texts in their castle multiple times. This will be no exception, and it is brand new.

He has found a pleasant reading nook, it took a little moving around to find one that suited him, but he is currently returning a few he went through. They all appear to be on history, for now. That is the best way for a historian to get used to a new world. Istredd glances over when he hears that sigh, having observed the man doing the same gesture a few times. ]

Not at all the quality of what he's used to. But it's still better than a blanket, so he'll deal. His options are limited anyway. ]

I have no doubt you'll look much better than I ever could in it, anyway.

[ Grinning, he listens to her talk about her home. They've spoken of it once or twice before, but he always found her tales fascinating. It always sounds so foreign from what he knows. ]

Yeeeeah, that wouldn't work in Faerghus. Everyone would be icicles within twenty minutes. Not everyone can pull off that shade of blue, I wouldn't suggest trying. [ Turning, he casts her a playful wink. ] But we come up with different ways of showing off. Although I admit, being shirtless wouldn't hurt my chances any.

[Uncommonly polite for someone engaging in a spar. It's something Altaïr rarely sees in the training ring and wouldn't require from his men, but he finds it strangely charming all the same.

He sees the first strike coming, despite Dimitri's relative speed — with longer weapons, it's harder not to. He catches the strike on his so-called blade, feeling the strength behind the blow, gaining a better sense of Dimitri's capabilities. Then he pivots in place, attempting to catch Dimitri in the side before he can bring the lance around in his own defense.]

You're right, it's not yours. It's not mine. It's not anyone's that they bring here but we're still stuck in the middle of it.

( and while nothing has happened yet, matt can sense something's coming. even if he hadn't talked to a few people that have been here longer than him, he can tell that there's a tension in the air that feels heavy.

he doesn't like it. there's a tipping point that this place is balancing on and that can't last.

matt sighs, dropping his own voice so only frank's able to hear. )

I don't expect anything from you. I'm sitting here telling you that if you try to leave, you know where you're going to go? To some other part of this place where this whole thing is still present. You're not going to find a door that just leads you back to your home and your life. I don't need your help, I can take care of myself —

( he doesn't need any scoffing from the peanut gallery, thank you. )

— and I sure as hell know not to expect anything from you. I'm just trying to tell you what this is.

It's an odd sensation being in a place where he doesn't know where he stands. Worse, not knowing where it is he wants to stand in this world. He had been so young when his path in Ketterdam had been laid out before him. No there is no reputation, no club and Dregs to back him, nothing but who he is.

Which isn't the same as who he wants people to know. That us the balance of him figuring out just where he is. Something he could have considered before someone found him straining with his damaged leg on the streets of the city.

That she hasn't pointed out his troubles, nor made attempts to try and convince him to sit down or any manner of means of trying to convince him to take it easier on himself is winning points in his favor.

That she changes the subject as if she hadn't found him in that state means even more.

"I find it hard to considered myself summoned as much as kidnapped. You?"

It's almost a challenge, assuming that if she had fallen for their join the Army spiel she wouldn't be out here exploring like he is. He nods though at the question.

"The Sarstina. I know people who work there and have made their home there. I'd trust it over most places here." He pauses, knowing he could leave it at that and go. Instead of lets out a sharp breath. "I can show you where it is?"

She regards him with the same distrust as she'd offered the sages who had pulled her from the fountain. It's nothing immediately personal – she is trying to place him within the four nations of her world. Trying and failing: he has the blue eyes of the water tribes, sure, but his hair is an unusually light shade, and not in a way that implies a premature greying.

Strange. Very strange. She straightens herself, aware that, without her armour and her hair still fountain-wet, she isn't making much of an impression. So if she's going to name one of her accomplishments, it had better be a big one.

I brought the Earth Kingdom to its knees and conquered its last free city. I am to be the youngest fire lord in history.

That's going great, by the way, her rule is not in the middle of being contested and she looks like she hasn't slept in two days because it's going just that smoothly.

And what have you done with yourself?

That's nice. At the moment, you're just another Summoned. They don't recognize foreign sovereignty around here.

[Mat swings his legs over the edge of the bed to sit on the side, framed by bed curtains.]

But! I am sure you'll be pleased to hear there are servants to attend you, to an extent. Or so I assume, as my bed is always made at the end of the day and I have never once made it, nor taken my clothing for washing but it is always freshly laundered.

[He tries not to make too much of a mess, though. He's of two minds about being waited on. It's certainly nice, and feels somewhat deserved after all he's gone through. On the other hand, he knows damn well what it's like to be at the bottom of the social mantles. He doesn't want to take advantage.

He doubts he can say the same of this fire lady.]

And it's a damned bed, it doesn't matter. If something manages to get in here to attack you, you're already quite fucked. This castle's defended by hordes of guards and mages and magical spells.

Fair enough, honestly. If Wanheda didn't mean commander of death she might've used it more often. As it is, she's still half-waiting for someone to come looking for her under that name, as it's the only reason she can see that she'd be notable enough to be brought here on her own.

As for Earth...

"What? No, Earth's kind of... over."

A kinder way of saying it than we blew it up twice. (So far.)

"Octavia."

It's a breathless exhalation of relief and -- a little horror, to be honest, because if Octavia's here then where is everyone else, and what happened back in the bunker? But none of that stops her from running over to meet the other girl and immediately, instinctively throw her arms around her out of the sheer joy of seeing anyone again.

She'd counted her life as over, and then she'd woken up here, and none of it seemed to point to seeing anyone she knew in this lifetime until now.

"Are you okay? Is anyone else-- where were you before this?"

Mystic Falls? What land is that in?

[ He nods though. ]

It is to the north. It's beyond Ravka. Quite the trip by ship and barely passable by land. I was there for a time to do a job.

Their people look a lot like you. Pale skin and hair. Sharp eyes. They also talking of witches and burning.

main roads! ALSO AHHH RAND.

[personal profile] hairington 2022-07-24 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[ steve has been out on this road for a couple of hours now. it was the first place where he escaped to, when the settlement had just started to feel a little too weird and a little too stifling. he didn't have much of a plan other than the plow in hand, but there had been mentions of creatures and monsters that sometimes frequented these very roads, and steve just. less so needed to go hit something and more so needed to feel like he was doing literally anything other than sitting there and being preened at.

has he found any monsters at this point? no. has that stopped him yet? also no. does he have any actual idea of what he's doing? somewhat, but not nearly enough, especially where it concerns the forests and grasslands that span either side.

so while rand might have heard something that was distinctly not human, that probably has more to say about how badly steve is doing at tracking whatever animal he himself had heard than anything. because it is steve who comes stumbling out of the brush, very nearly stripping over his own feet and tryin to push away some of the branches and only barely managing to keep balance. he needs another step or two before he gets his feet under him again, looking around him before his eyes fall on the other boy on the road. ]

Uh- sorry. I was- [ he looks behind him back into the trees, then shakes his head, wiping across the front of his tunic. ] I thought I was following something, but apparently not.

"What?" He asks, tone somewhere between startled and puzzled.

"Are we talking about the same Earth?" Or: you okay, buddy? Because Peter's pretty sure Earth is still chugging along — someone would've mentioned it if it wasn't. "Sol-3? Fairly average planet in the Milky Way? That Earth?" A long pause. Then, half-mumbled and with a sidelong glance at Clarke —

"It's, uh, it's still there. Unless you mean it's 'over' in the sense that there are way cooler planets in the galaxy to visit, in which case: yeah."

[ Thancred scoffs and shakes his head. ] There is nothing for you to apologize for, Urianger. [ Yes, his comment might have hit a nerve, but that has everything to do with Thancred and his own hang-ups. There will always been that voice in the back of his mind insisting that he is not doing enough, and while he has done what he can to position him in a place to gather intel here, the voice never quite fades.

There are many factors to consider in what they discuss, as well. Thancred will not be entirely open about the state of things in Thorne unless they are in the Horizon, understanding that it is far too easy for eavesdropping to take place here.

It is kind of Urianger to shift closer despite his discomfort. Thancred eases some of the tension out of his shoulders, a fond smile returning before long. Any tetchiness aside, he is extremely relieved to have such a good friend here.

Urianger makes the first move when it comes to comparing their memories, and of course he would choose that name, as the source of their most recent woes. A small, relieved breath escapes Thancred as he nods. ]

I do, though Himeka has not yet lived through the Final Days. I have told her some of what will come to pass, but not all. [ There's a pause and then he lowers his gaze, studying the gentle ripples in the water. ] The last I could recall was us reaching Ultima Thule, only for Meteion to appear aboard the Ragnaork to snatch the very air away from us. After I lost consciousness, I was here.

[ How disconcerting that had been, to not know whether or not he'd breathed his last. To not know for certain if they'd triumphed, though he'd believed in Himeka. Thankfully, that has been cleared up now. ]

When Y'shtola arrived, she did assure me that we were able to put a stop to her in the end.

[ yennefer is on her way across the castle. she has papers in hand, which have more of her own scribbling than anything else on them, ingredients and ideas and concepts. she's already sent mat off on another errand because she's trying to figure out how to perfect this one potion she's working on, but as she looks over her pages, she's finding herself wondering if he was going to get everything she needed.

all this to say, she's a bit distracted, and has somewhere to go and to be, when she rounds the corner. all this to say, she's not even really looking where she is going, used to most people in the castle parting ways for her to make her own down the middle of walkway. all this to say, it's a stroke of luck that she hears his voice at all, commenting on the castle of all things, and it immediately stops her in her tracks.

it is about that time, she supposes, that ambrose would start pulling through more summoned. and she also supposes that maybe she shouldn't really let herself be surprised that if anyone, anyone at all, was going to be pulled through into the castle, it would be him. still, her eyes are a bit wide as she looks up, turns on her heels, and sees him standing there and politely nodding to another member of the court. ]

You've got to be fucking kidding me.

[ she says, loudly enough that the member of the court sees her, immediately recognizes that this is not the time, and excuses himself.

welcome to castle thorne, istredd. did you miss her? ]
