TEST DRIVE MEME #2

TEST DRIVE MEME
Welcome to the second test drive meme for Abraxas! This meme is run a little bit differently than most in that you'll be asked to choose one of the two different arrival scenarios below for your character to take. If you have any questions about this mechanic or anything else related to the TDM, please take a look at the questions below or ask one of your own under the Questions header below. For general game questions please still use the FAQ.

Our previous TDM has some answers to relevant questions as well, and feel free to look at our Game History page! Anything on that page - including information about the Horizon and the Singularity - can be assumed to be told to newcomers after they arrive, whether they are prisoners or honored guests. For more information on Ambrose and the apprentice mages, please see our NPCs page.

Arrival

You awaken suspended in the abyss, silent darkness stretching out in all directions. If you try to yell, you'll find that the sound doesn't carry. If you try to move, you'll find it's impossible to tell whether or not you're actually getting anywhere. If you reach for an item you were carrying last time you remember being awake, your hand will only touch bare skin.

You're naked and floating helplessly through the void, and what little air you have in your lungs is running out.

There's a pinprick of light that almost looks like a faraway star but as it grows it becomes clear that it's actually quite close. Through the opening you can see a bright room, but it's hard to make out any individual objects, as if you're looking from beneath rippling water.

A hand plunges through and you realize water is just what it is. Whether you take hold of the hand or not it will grab you and yank you up through the surface, lifting you out until you're sprawled on solid ground. Once you catch your breath, you can get a better look at the surroundings: tall trees and even taller stone pillars surround the platform you're laying on. Behind you is an ornate fountain, the base of which is so deep and so dark you might be compelled to scramble away from it lest it suck you back in to that endless abyss. Ahead of you are the walls of a large castle with several tall towers reaching up towards the sky.

If you had any powers, they feel unusually weak. Attempts to use magic or enhanced strength or powers of any sort fizzle out without any effect, but they don't feel completely gone, either.

Set into an indent on a marble slab behind the fountain is a card baring the image of one of the arcana.

An apprentice mage - the one whose hand lifted you out of the fountain - brushes the water off on their robes and runs back to join a group of three others, who all stare intently at a mage with highly decorated robes and a large, heavy book. He peers up at you for a moment and starts flipping through the book.

"I beg your pardon," he says, so absorbed in the pages of the book that he doesn't bother to look up, "I am Ambrose Rhett, the High Mage of the Kingdom of Thorne. One of my apprentices will explain everything in a moment, but please refrain from yelling and thrashing about until then. You're quite alright, and screaming gives me a hell of a headache."

Regardless of your response, he keeps flipping through the heavy tome, until he stops on one specific page, stares at it for a moment, and then exclaims:

"Aha!"

Scenario One: Welcome to Thorne

Ambrose's expression brightens, eyes twinkling with delight. He waves one of the apprentices over with a fine silk tunic, pants, and some basic sandals and with a wave of his hand they reshape to fit you perfectly.

"Oh, thank heavens," he sighs, closing the book and approaching you with a sort of worn-out relief.

Now that he's not hunching over the book, he doesn't seem quite so stuffy and inapproachable. The apprentices all seem quite relieved at his jovial outburst, and the one that handed you the tunic stops to take the tarot card down from the marble slab. If you show any curiosity about the card, they'll let you take a longer look, but won't let you touch it.

"Please, come with me, you're an honored guest here," he says, motioning for you to follow him towards the castle, "As promised, my pupils will explain your current situation. And, ah - if you had any magic of your own, or other special abilities you can't access right now, fear not, they'll return within the week. The summoning takes a lot out of you."

One of the apprentices steps forward and rattles on and on about the castle, Thorne itself, the names of a bunch of royals and nobles, and of course, your reason for being here. The Kingdom and the world itself is in great peril, and tales of your exploits have reached far and wide across universes. If asked about these exploits, the apprentice will simply smile and shrug. The High Mage was happy to see you and that's good enough.

Once inside the castle you're taken to the North Wing, which has been set up as living quarters for you and your fellow newcomers. There are four people to a room, but each generously-sized bed has opaque curtains that can be drawn around it. You can meet your roommates here and discuss your shared situation (the newcomers who were summoned back in June may have a great deal of information to tell you), or you can wander around and meet the others.

There's also a dining hall stocked with a rotating 24/7 buffet in celebration of the new honored guests. Somehow, your very favorite food is part of the rotation (or at least an attempted recreation of it given the limited technology available to the Thorneans). The town surrounding the castle is all abuzz as well, with most shops and services willing to give free samples of their wares to the new arrivals.

You may also notice that your sign is embroidered on your tunic: the same image you saw on the card from before with the name of the sign itself beneath it. If you ask the castle residents, they'll tell you a little bit about your sign (and will mostly stick to the positives, although some might point out the negatives).

Last (and, if you ask anyone else in the castle, least) there is a worn stone staircase leading underground to the dungeon. You can go there, if you wish, but all powers are restricted in the dungeons and spending too much time with the prisoners will lead to some suspicion being cast upon you. If you ask anyone why the prisoners are being held there, you'll be told that they pose a potential threat to the Kingdom (and, by extension, the entire world) and are awaiting trial.

Scenario Two: Imprisoned

"Drat," Ambrose says with a frown, "And here I thought we'd worked out all the kinks this time."

The High Mage looks up from his book, wide-eyed as he stumbles back. If you look behind you, you'll notice that in the time it took Ambrose to browse his book, the tarot card hanging behind you has reversed and is now hanging upside down. An apprentice runs to snatch it from the pillar and put it back with the rest of the deck.

The apprentices seem apprehensive, but Ambrose regains his composure and resists the urge to insult their newly summoned captive. Instead, he turns to the apprentices: "Get them clothed and we'll send them to await trial."

One of the apprentices drops a baggy, rough-feeling tunic, a pair of pants, and some worn sandals in your lap and glares down at you until you put them on (if you refuse, they'll tell you they can kick you back down that well if you don't want to cooperate).

Once you're fully clothed, another apprentice clamps some heavy iron shackles around your wrists and leads you on. The High Mage is far ahead of you already, muttering some long string of Thornean curses before he stands up straight and pauses, spinning to face you.

"One more thing," he says, holding one hand in the air and chanting something under his breath, "Can't have you getting too troublesome."

If you had powers, the slight connection you still had to them slips away completely and you're left with nothing as the four apprentices drag you towards the castle. Despite your prisoner status, they will answer your questions to the best of their ability.

Once you arrive at the castle you're brought to the dungeons and thrown into a locked cell. There are four people to a cell, and two sets of bunk beds with a thin and lumpy straw mattress. If you're over six feet tall, these beds are going to be awfully uncomfortable. You might as well meet your roommates. Once per day you're dragged out to an enclosed courtyard for one hour of recreation (with some crude weights, benches, and balls lying around but not much else), where you can meet the rest of the prisoners, but you can also talk to your immediate neighbors in the cells on either side and across the hallway. Just don't yell too much or the guards will snap at you to be quiet.

Everyone in the dungeon is fed one meal a day, and for a prison meal it's decent: a bit of meat, a bun, and a salad. It would seem that the Thornean chefs take too much pride in their craft to send bad food to the dungeons. The meals are all served in equal portions, though, so the smaller prisoners may be overfed and the larger ones may be getting hungry. Feel free to fight for food or share with your cellmates.

Crudely embroidered on the back of every prison tunic is the same image that was on your card and the name of the sign beneath it. A guard may explain a bit about the sign, and will be blunt and honest but not overly negative about it.

You may be blessed with a visit from one of the more welcomed newcomers, and they may sneak you some extra food or a small book to read or they may share some of the information they've gathered. The guards will even interfere if the honored guests are being overtly cruel to the prisoners from now on.

Questions

How many slots are open?
Currently, there are only four slots open for new players. We will process activity check before opening applications, so we will have a better idea of the exact count then. Existing players can apply for a second character withour restriction.

How do I choose a scenario for my character?
Pick whichever situation appeals to you most. Whether your character is honored or imprisoned has nothing to do with their personal morality, or how highly they regard themselves and their own accomplishments. Anyone can be put into either situation.

Can I try out both scenarios?
You can! But please keep in mind that only the one you eventually choose can be game canon, if you decide to keep any of your TDM threads.

What happens if my character refuses to comply with Ambrose?
Prisoners will be dragged against their will. Honored guests will be forgiven for their moment of panic or anger if they have one, and Ambrose and the apprentice mages will try to calm them and persuade them further. If they put up too much of a fight and/or start actively attacking anyone, Ambrose will warn them once that he's willing to put them back in the well where they came from (see below), and if they continue to fight he will make good on that promise.

My character intends on causing a lot of trouble (destroying parts of the castle, murdering the castle staff, etc.), what would happen to them?
Characters who make too much trouble for the mages and other staff would be thrown back in the well (which will mean drowning in the void, not returning home). Brawling with other PCs and causing minor damage is fine and will be greeted with a cranky attitude (if they are an honored guest) or a punishment like denial of food or temporary solitary confinement (if they are a prisoner), and there will be plenty of opportunity for destruction and murder later, but for now the Thorneans have no desire to keep huge liabilities around.

I want to wildcard a prompt or use one of the prompts from the original TDM that isn't on this one (eg. the library), can I do that?
Yes!

Is the power loss for the prisoners permanent?
No, although honored guests will regain their powers first due to the lack of interference from Ambrose, the prisoners will be able to regain theirs soon enough as well.

Can the prisoners talk about anything private, or will they be overheard at all times?
There are guards patrolling the dungeon, but they aren't always within earshot. Most of the attention is being focused on the new guests, so the prisoners will have some opportunities for privacy.

The first prisoners in June were just thrown in their cells without being told they are awaiting trial. Will they be told differently now that the new prisoners are here?
Yes, all prisoners new and old will be told that the Court has shown mercy on them and they will be given a fair trial sometime in August to determine their fate.

Whether or not that's actually true - and whether they believe it, even if it is - is another story, but they will all be informed.

Can my character leave the castle?
Honored guests can leave the castle itself, but cannot leave the surrounding town.

Can my character eventually side against Thorne if I choose to make them an honored guest/can they side with Thorne if I choose to imprison them?
For this TDM, it will be easier for welcomed characters to side with Thorne and for imprisoned characters to side with one of the other two factions, so we encourage you to take a look at the factions and see where you might want your character to go.

However, that is not set in stone and if you change your mind, characters in Scenario 1 will be able to betray Thorne, and characters in Scenario 2 can work themselves into Thorne's good graces.

How much will my choice of scenario affect my character's plot later on?
This choice will affect characters throughout August, but our August event will wrap up the honored guests vs. prisoners plotline, so your character won't be imprisoned for too long. This decision - and every other major decision you make in game! - will also be used to flavor some mod surprises that will be coming down the line.

Don't get too anxious about this choice, though; this is just one choice you'll get to make in a game that has a lot of them, and every character in both scenarios can work their way towards many, many individual goals and outcomes. You're not locking yourself out of anything in the future via the choice you made on the TDM. It will primarily impact the immediate future with the far-reaching effects being up to each player.

Are TDM threads mandatory for my application?
No, you may use other samples, but we encourage you to post to the TDM and get a feel for this game and its mechanics before you join. If you do not have a TDM thread you will still need to choose one of the two scenarios on your application.

What if I haven't settled on a sign yet?
You can ignore sign-related prompts if you're undecided (or try out different signs in different threads).

Louis has more than a passing familiarity with being in a cage. But he reminds himself that these people's situation is nothing like his was. And now, he's the one in power. He can't afford to lose that advantage, what precious few advantages his has at the moment.

"Interesting." That the mage's magic found this maybe-human to be insufficiently obedient implies that it found Louis to be obedient. Louis is rarely if ever obedient for the sake of it; that implies that either the magic is flawed, or Louis will find a good reason to play along with the old man's whims. "Do you think you're insufficiently obedient?"

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Mayhap so." He shrugs his shoulders. He can definitely imagine some things that book might say about him that would imply he would be difficult to control. "You've heard of a self-fulfilling prophecy, haven't you? The truest way to make an enemy is to treat them as one from the start."

It's impossible to know how this might have gone if Ambrose had accepted them all from the start without creating these cruel divisions. How he himself might have responded had he not been immediately chained and thrown in a cage.

"You have a point there," Louis leans on his crutch, tilting his head to look at the prisoner closer. He has larger, pointier ears than the other humans Louis has seen, but he can't tell if that's a significant distinction or not. Perhaps this one is just a different breed of human. At the very least, Louis is pretty sure that this one is a male of the species with his deeper voice. "I can't say I would have been inclined to help either if they preemptively threw me in a cage."

He's pretty sure he'd be ready to shoot them all dead if he could in that case, but it's not the case. He's been taken care of, as much as a kidnapped deer can be.

"How long have you been here? In this cage?" Louis barrels on with questioning the prisoner. He wants answers, and he sees no need to dance around getting them.

Fortunately, Estinien feels no need to keep Ambrose's secrets, and also prefers being direct. The question is more complicated for him to answer than the first, though. He has to pause to think.

"We were brought here two months ago... and I can't say I was expecting the whoreson to try again." There's obvious disgust in his tone as he says that. Estinien himself is definitely more in the 'shooting them dead' zone at this point. "Though not all of that was spent in this prison. They've had us doing slave labour and... other things, in between. All for the crime of having been brought here against our wills."
productid4: (Oh you poor stupid creature)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
"I see. You're a source of free labor for them, then?" It's better than being a source of food, but he doesn't say that. He doesn't want to put thoughts into the humans' heads. "I suppose that would incentivize them to keep pulling 'wrong' people to their world, even after the first attempt."

He cocks his head, nearly knocking his antlers on the bars behind him. Ugh. Why is this hall so narrow? Is this place really just meant for humans?

"Are you a male human?" He might as well be direct about it. It isn't always easy to tell the difference between different breeds of the same species and different species of a similar genus offhand. It's also not always easy to tell the separate sexes; luckily most species' voices tend to be deeper as men and higher as women, but it's not a rule that always holds true.

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least this guy seems appropriately cynical about the whole thing. He really doesn't know why Ambrose thinks this behavior is going to encourage people to gather under his banner, unless they are either evil or indolent.

The question would be more surprising if Estinien wasn't already accustomed to speaking to creatures that are wholly inhuman. He raises a shoulder - the answer is complicated.

"I'm a male Elezen," he says. "Which is close enough to 'human' as far as someone like you is concerned." That is, a non-human, he assumes. "There are physical and cultural differences, but nothing that'd mean much to a stranger."

He gives Louis an appraising look.

"...I am familiar with something like your kind, but similarly not in the specifics. What do you call yourself?"
productid4: (Yes yes admire me)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Louis practically invented cynicism. It's what he's good at. He's spent most of his life being led around by the mouth by cold, powerful adults, and he has no intention of allowing that to happen here.

"I see. I suppose Elezen and humans are different sub-species?" Like the difference between a harlequin rabbit and a dwarf rabbit. Or... perhaps closer to the different between a Labrador and a wolf. He can't be sure.

Although given his interrogation of the man's species, it seems only fair to explain his own species in turn.

"I am a male red deer. You can tell with the antlers and the red fur." He gestures at the crown of sharp, weaving bone he has atop his head.
coerthantorment: (12)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Something like that.

This is definitely the most direct introduction to someone Estinien has had in recent history, but he supposes it does avoid unnecessary confusion. He would have guessed male, based on the horns, but he hasn't seen any beastmen that look quite like this. There were mammoth-like ones he'd heard of in the Far East, but besides that...

Red deer is also new to him, even if it's self explanatory. He's more used to blue deer, who have much different horns... and also don't walk in their hind feet like a man. In fact, in a lot of ways, Louis looks more man than animal.

"Are there humans in your realm?"
productid4: (I'm in the important chair)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Louis strives to be direct with his communication. He's not always honest, and he's not always genuine, but he's always direct.

"None. Nothing like you or the humans I've seen so far." He shakes his head, frowning. "There are all kinds where I come from. Wolves, rabbits, lions, goats, bears... Anything you can imagine, except humans."

As one can imagine, there's a certain amount of culture shock coming from that to this.
coerthantorment: (65)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Estinien can definitely understand that. It was strange enough coming to a world that was all Hyur - human? - with not any of the other races in sight. He's starting to imagine that Louis is from a world that's all beast tribes, which isn't particularly accurate, but it's within his realm of imagination.

Though they generally don't call themselves the same thing are regular animals. It's very strange seeing something that is ostensibly a man in everything but appearance refer to themself as a 'deer'.

"Most that arrive here do seem to be the same as those that summoned them," he says. "My own world has many different thinking beings... to see such little variety is more than strange."

He pauses, and then decides to ask another question.

"Do you refer to yourselves by the types of animals you resemble?"
productid4: (Excuse me what was that)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
"That we... resemble?" Louis frowns at the wording. Yes, he remembers the rude little human telling him that animals were considered lesser, less thinking beings here, somehow. And they must look different from him, if he's had to explain himself so often.

"No. We are animals. I am a red deer. Other people from my world are wolves, rabbits, lions, and so on. I understand that humans don't consider themselves animals."

Which is just plain weird to Louis, but he supposes that if there's only really one species around, then no one needs a collective noun to refer to all of them.
coerthantorment: (61)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, now he's confused. He stares for a few moments, silently, as if he's seeing Louis in a different light.

"...There are no beasts in your world?"

He needs to consider the ramifications of this.
productid4: (Considering how to kill you)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. He's not sure if he likes that different look in the creature's eyes.

"No, there are beasts. I'm a beast, as is everyone I know. You would be considered a beast as well. It's a more loaded way of saying 'person', I suppose."

Loaded with a lot of connotations, positive and negative.
coerthantorment: (23)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps Louis's world is even more different than he was anticipating. After a moment, Estinien shakes his head, gesturing with his hands to illustrate his point.

"Nay, that's not what I speak of. In this world, and my own, a beast would refer to a creature that is..." It's actually very hard to describe when this being has no concept of it. "One that does not think or act in a civilized way. One that could not act as men do, for they lack the capacity."

Beastmen are called as much due to a troubled history, but even so, the 'man' part of tht is important. It implies personhood, even if they act more like 'beasts' than how mankind considers themselves.

"You act as a man, even look like one, in all ways but the superficial. When the people here speak of animals and beasts, they mean creatures that cannot communicate as we do. They are unthinking... driven only by immediate need to feed, sleep, and mate. You are not an animal as these people understand it."
productid4: (Oh no puppy eyes)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Louis furrows his brow and his ears twitch in thought. Something that completely lacks the capacity to communicate with others? Something that only considers food, sleep, and sex?

"...Like insects, you mean?" He thinks that's the only category of creatures that he knows of which fit that description. Mindless things so small and insignificant that no one except someone like Legoshi cares about them. Herbivores aren't even bothered particularly if carnivores eat them.

"Non-humans behave like... insects where you come from?" He's having difficulty conceptualizing it. It's hard to imagine what a mindless society of animals would look like.

Or maybe he can imagine it.

"I suppose there's precedent for that where I come from. Carnivores addicted to meat become mindless." He's seen them with their hollow eyes and wide, drooling mouths, snapping at him even as the lions beat them to death. Even so, they were thinking people once, and maybe they could be again if they can ever overcome their fiendish appetite. But he supposes they can't in this world the creature is describing, this world he's in right now. Carnivores too unintelligent to overcome their monstrous nature, and herbivores too unintelligent to resist them. It's... horrifying.
coerthantorment: (103)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
There's a lot to consider here, further complicated that Louis is talking about 'carnivores' despite the fact that he's established that all the animals in his world are people. What does that mean? Whatever it is, it sounds terrible.

"Insects would be even lesser than beasts," he clarifies. "For the most part. While animals as I know them cannot think far beyond their next meal, they may show affection for each other and human caretakers. Even loyalty. Insects, however, seem to think of very little."

Estinien does actually have respect for animals and beasts, especially the ones that can be trained to live alongside man, though the nuances of that were lost in his effort to make his point.

"...Are you saying that the hunters of your society still feed upon their fellows?"
productid4: (Let me put you in your place)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Animals here can show affection and loyalty? Hm. Louis really doesn't know what to think of all this, but he'd like to see what these animals look like. He hopes they don't look just like his classmates, just naked and nuzzling in between bouts of eating each other.

Although the thought is interrupted by the question.

"...Are you saying they don't where you come from?" That's interesting. Also... he can't tell if it's relieving or frustrating. Relieving, perhaps, to be around people who aren't always fighting the urge to eat each other, but frustrated that something so fundamental to his understanding of the world may not really apply here. Do humans want to eat him? Are they carnivores or herbivores? Should he be sleeping with a gun when he has human roommates?

"...It's illegal for carnivores to eat meat," he allows. "But it doesn't stop many of them." Most of them, really. "They have predatory instincts, and it takes willpower and vigilance to fight against them. Not all carnivores are up to that challenge, and some will slip and devour their herbivore friends or colleagues. Do humans have those instincts?"
coerthantorment: (89)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, what the fuck.

Naturally, this must be a lot for Louis to take in, if that's really what he's grown up dealing with. It's a lot for Estinien to consider - the idea of being drawn to a world where it's considered normal for half of its population to want to eat the other... he can't say he would appreciate the experience. Mankind has enough problems as it is.

"Nay," he says carefully. "To eat thinking beings, let alone your own countrymen, is mayhap the least natural impulse there is."

Even dragons don't consider eating children of man normal, despite being from another planet.
productid4: (Excuse me what was that)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
That... sounds fake.

"So... you're saying that humans don't feel any urge to eat each other. And they wouldn't feel any urge to eat you or me? Or... you them?"

He... doesn't know what to do with that. He should feel good, shouldn't he? Like a weight is off of him? But... what does he do with himself if he's not constantly fighting to survive? What is there to life if there aren't beautiful contradictory carnivores loving him and in some small part wanting to eat him at the same time?

...Wow, that last thought needs to go into a dark closet somewhere. Having his leg eaten has addled his brain, clearly. Maybe love without danger and fangs has turned bland for him.
coerthantorment: (57)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-08-03 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
This deer man seems somewhat distraught about all of this, and Estinien is inclined to be sympathetic, temporarily having forgotten about the fact that Louis is a guest and he is a prisoner. He doesn't really know what can be said about this, but...

"Mankind does hunt and eat the animals of their own worlds... but no. They would not eat a person such as you, or me. You could not reasonably be mistaken for the animals here. The physical differences are as substantial as the mental."

Louis ultimately has very human-like proportions. Even if he were to forgo clothing and speech, it would be a less than natural sight.
productid4: (Oh no puppy eyes)

[personal profile] productid4 2021-08-03 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
This should really be good news. It means that he can let his guard down somewhat, doesn't it?

He just feels so... wrong about it. Like there's something deeply unnatural about not being surrounded by people who simultaneously want to protect him and want to eat him. Like he's lost something important to him somehow.

"This will... take some getting used to."

Louis tries really hard to maintain his neutral expression, but he's clearly shaken. It's so strange. He wanted so badly to create a world where no one had to go through what he did, and he's handed it on a silver platter. Why isn't he happy?

"Understand, the tension between herbivores and carnivores... it's fundamental to my society. It's the underpinning of... everything, I suppose." Everything. From how they build their infrastructure, to how they structure their education, to how they interact and self-segregate and intermingle... everything. But he shouldn't go on at length about it, should he? He wants to act like this doesn't really matter to him, like nothing is ever really more than a small obstacle to simply step over and continue on his way.

As he thinks, his stump of a leg twitches, waving in the air uncomfortably like he's shifting his weight.
